Thanks Eggcelent I feel better with your reply cos I was almost giving up on poultry farming which has always been my favorite. With you and others beside me I know I will get to my target in poultry farming. Once again thanks for the encouragement.
..
You can estimate how much to feed your birds from the chart here: http://www.farmersjoint.com/blog/livestock-farming/poultry/feed-consumption-plan-body-weight-target-laying-hens/. Did you formulate your own feed? If so you have to make sure it is well balanced.

It's been awesome following this thread all along, thanks guys for the priceless info I've gotten here... I actually did an experiment on broilers and it was an eye opener although not profitable... I wasn't expecting it to be though cos I lost over 50% of them and then sold the remaining one this Xmas period.... So the next thing I intend doing is going into egg production so I'd be hoping to continue to get more info from this thread as time goes on... My first need that I have right now is the list of vaccines and date I'd need to administer to my layers from DOC to pol... I intend stocking 540 birds... Thanks in anticipation
..
Since you don't have experience yet, better start with 100. This may help: http://farmersjoint.com/doc-screening-lab-result.html

morning all! pls what drugs do you use in brooding new layers. i use vitamins, glucose, antistress and antibiotics. but someone advised me not to use antibiotics unless i noticed any sickness pls house i need your contributions. thank you
..
There is no fix rule here. It depends on the area. If you're area has high cases of disease incidence, then use antibiotics to brood.

alright then. I'll administer Lasota. Though the eggs have been steadily increasing. Yesterday was 25, today 30 with 2 soft-shelled found on each day. The population of my stock is 93. This is their 3rd week into laying. Are the numbers fair?

I hope to learn from the esteemed reponses of ogas in the auz

abidecz. From the pix, I can ASSUME that 3 out of the 4 sides are blocked, hence limiting the ventilation. That is not ideal, especially at this time of extreme weather; very cold at night/morning, very hot in the afternoon. Your birds are being challenged by HEAT STRESS due to poor ventilation. I'll recommend "Stresoak" - an anti stress herbal mixture to be given as prescribed as a temporary solution. Permanent solution will be to relocate the birds to a more conducive pen as soon as you are able. Ayodapoemmanuel. I've no prior experience with birds from "yammfy farms". I'll only advise you follow strictly the treatment/management schedule given you by the agent. Smankerena. What is causing the CRD? Where are the pullets from? Did you use the antibiotics in the right dosage & for the prescribed number of days? Are you sure the only bacterial infection the birds have is respiratory? Administering antibiotics without first determining the causative factors could be counterproductive. Success.

noted... This thread has been a real eye opener

Am a salary earner and I only get my pay at the end of the month and I also don't earn much in salary so it's sometimes difficult for me to feed them.

pls how much does it cost to procure the 50kg bag of feed??

elders in the house pls advice (for a newbie) buying the feed from recognized sources or formulating the feed by oneself which is better for layers

It's not really a test run, I'm just trying to apply all the knowledge I've been able to gather both from nairaland and as a broiler farmer into egg production albeit on a bigger scale

Ok, but you have to be careful. Did you calculated space requirement in terms of 5birds/m2? That's the one suitable for hot climates.

Ok, so I have good news. I got 30 6-week old turkeys today. grin. I'm so happy. My first foray into bird farming. My parents have fully grown turkeys and chickens, so I just took out a section of the farm house to use for my birds.

To recap, they are actually about 7 weeks old. The breeder said she had given anticox. I bought a bag of top feed chick mash, and placed them on antibiotics, will give them multivitamins in 2 days. I will deworm on Saturday.

I will give lasota on January 10, and change to growers mash after they finish this bag of chick mash (mid-January?)

Luckily, we have experienced farm hands which should help a lot.

Any suggestion/advice would be well received. Have a prosperous New Year!!! smiley

P.S.- Attached is a picture of the the breeders stock at her home farm.

It's livestock feeds. And the prices depends on the capacity. How many tons?

Hello house. I am a new turkey farmer, with 30 6-, week old birds.

I have heard that it is recommended to separate the birds with a male:female ratio of about 1:4. This is to ensure proper fertilization of the females(because I plan on collecting and hatching the eggs, and selling off the hatchlings), and also to prevent fighting (something I witnessed firsthand! )

So, I would like to know if keeping the turkeys in pens would disrupt the organic farming I'm aiming for(less fat when they are table-size)

Any other advice would be appreciated (eg best feed to give, when to change type of feed[chick to growers mash], any precautions to take, etc.)

P.S.: They are still on top feed chick mash. How may weeks old is it advisable to switch to growers mash? I plan on using top feed throughout, because I heard it is good for laying female turkeys. any contrary opinion?

Happy belated new year. smiley
