President Muhammadu should ban vehicles, handbags, cell phones, motorcycles and suits instead of the hijab, the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria, Lagos state area unit, has said.
The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has also questioned why army and police uniforms have not been banned despite being used by bandits. Many bombings have been carried out by Boko Haram fighters wearing hijab, most of them female. The president said on Thursday that he would consider banning the hijab in order to checkmate Boko Haram. Chad, a Muslim-majority country, banned the use of hijab following two attacks carried out in the country. Saheed Ashafa, the amir of MSSN LSAU, said:
“If Hijab ban must be considered, then the government has to also ban use of vehicles, hand bags, cell phones, motorcycles and suits because more evils have been perpetuated through them. “It’s totally illogical to attach Boko Haram attacks to a dress code or pattern. Our Hijab is a garment of honour; it is an apparel of modesty and an outfit commanded to be worn by Allah.” He said it would be a victory for Boko Haram if hijab is banned. “It is known to everyone that Hijab is worn by Muslims and a ban on the religious garment is an attack on Islam,” he said. “Just as it would be wrong for anyone to say that suits or vehicles should be banned because they are used to rob or assassinate and terrorise; it would also be unfair for anybody to consider Hijab ban because of its wrong usage.” MURIC has also condemned the proposed ban, describing it as “escapist” and “scapegoatism”. “It will open the floodgates of anarchy. Instead of solving Nigeria’s security problems, it is most likely to compound it,
” its director, Ishaq Akintola, said. The professor said: “If army and police uniforms are not banned although they are often used by bandits, why should we ban hijab? Security agents know how they often fish out hoodlums who use police and soldiers’ uniforms to commit atrocities. The same method should be used to prevent the use of hijab for bombing. “What crime have Nigerian Muslim women committed that they should be derobed in public? Without their hijab, Muslim women feel as if they are naked. “Users of hijab are in all walks of life. They are civil servants, business women, teachers, etc. Most importantly, they are tax payers and voters. They voted Buhari into power. Is Buhari’s government warming up to encroach on Allah-given fundamental rights of Muslim women? Is this an appropriate pay-back?” Controversy has often trailed the ban on wearing of hijabs in secular schools in the south-west.

How does the ban on hijab make a Muslim woman non Muslim? Most of these misguided Muslims are living in SW where they don't see horrors being perpetuated by boko haram using females.

These Students Muslim society or whatever: absolutely failing to see reasons even when the reasons are so apparent and reasonable. Then naming dumb examples as examples in defence. How does cars, police uniforms, army uniforms etc equate to Hijabs in these peculiar circumstances? Can a female carry a bomb inside a police or army uniform. Can a vehicle mingle among people?

Any in any case, it is the full Hijab that will be banned. Those that covers the fave and bossom will still be allowed. But I know the troublesome nature in some Muslims will still be lamenting, despite that people are dying because of this hijab thing which is used as a cover to destroy lives and property.

Then I thought all these wailers IPOB claimed that Buhari was an Islamic fundamentalist, a fanatic who would islamise Nigeria should we make the mistake of electing him. Now he proposing a ban of Hijab, and under him a Shiite group was dismantled (maybe not in order) and Buhari didn't cry to the heavens.

I'm sure if the President had said, No, No, hijab cannot be banned because it's a command given by Allah to Muslims, these same people would have been screaming their heads off: didn't we tell you the man is an Islamic fanatic! Is the hijab more important than the lives of the people.

Does Obama have to take an action to make it appropriate

These guys are jokers. Baba would do what we feel is in our best interest and I believe most Nigerians would back him up on this- some out of the need for a more secure society, others out of sheer hatred for Islam. Regardless, if banning a mode of dressing is a sacrifice we have to make for enhanced security, so shall it be.

The matters are difficult because we live in difficult times but buhari would really have to take a long thought on the matter.

What should be banned?

Since bh would easily move from using the hijab to other clothing, so the question remains what or when will the banning stop? Maybe until we walk uncloth. The problem is really not hijab but how we identify potential attackers and detecting bomb. We should remember suicide bombing has been mostly undertaken by men. Do we ban bags? Big skirts? Etc as a solution banning the hijab is very pedestrian because it fails to take a more holistics look on the matter and attributes cause to the wrong sources.

Implementation: the how?

How do we intend to implement such ban? Arrest and demand fines? I suspect we would face wide violations of such law, if the violators in a single day runs into 1000s do we have the capacity to arrest so many people talk more of compelling them to pay? This would once again lead to isolating individuals and civilians who would be key to winning the war.

The Way forward

The solutions maybe include more of persuasions rather than banning, Improved system of detecting would be suicide bombers, preaching about the unacceptabiity of suicide bombing, deploying bomb detectors in public places, restrict availability of bomb making materials etc

The solutions requires more of critical analytical thinking rather than hysteria and panic measures. Banning the hijab in a region mainly muslim will hand bh a strong propaganda tool, we should be wary of such.

Females may not wear police uniform but men boko haram member did wear the military uniform when they took the chibok girls. I remembered these boko bastards too have used ladies handbag sometimes ago.

The fact is, even if the hijab is banned, unless our intelligence system is improved, they will simply look for another strategy to carry out their atrocities.

Rubbish human right ko or activist ni...Hw many of the activist family are in the north east where the bomb blast is taken place.

The last two that happened cost almost 80lives, did the yeye activist think of those children that suddenly become orphan, fatherless or motherless all in the name of religion? If the activist really want to show their loyalty let them relocate to Maiduguri and not Lagos that is peaceful.

Why did Nigeria reason with their left brain when it com to religion issue. At least let them banned the long hijab that make the women look like masquerade and enjoin those who want to wear hijab to wear the short one.

Let me sound this clear wearing hijab does not connote any right doing or purity of ladies most of us that live in the north knows very well that some ladies wear the same hijab and commit any atrocities you can think off Jus name it from prostitutes, smoking, etc.

I am a graduate of ABU those days in sch u hear of one head four legs...this is a situation wear a lady with long hijab cover a man beneath her hijab while wriggle her body to the touch of the man, any passerby will only notice one head and four legs. This is common in Samaru the main campus though Kongo is not left out.

Have you ever seen the picture of Holy Mary without a hijab or veil?

It's not suffocation, every sane religion preaches for their women to cover their hair.

Be guided.

I think the word "ban" is inappropriate as it may imply total outlaw of any kind of head coverage, what should be done is to reduce the length to just below the shoulder or head scarf, long hijab and niqab are being abused at moment.

Some of the people chanting ban hijab are less concerned about protecting lives rather agitating their deep hatred towards Islam sad

I'll need to rethink my position a bit on this issue in the face of your more sensible submission. I used be one of those who supported a ban on the veil in the NE, however a partial one.

I thought it'd make sense to adjust to the times and reason a bit with government. Since the ban will only last for a while anyway and only the fuller veil type would be affected -- Khimar, Chador, Niqab and Burka. See attached image.

But hmmmm... Let us please maintain this dialogue with government.

God bless our gallant men fighting off these insurgents. May Allah give us victory over boko haram.

Are we going to ban agbada and babanriga too?

And the backpack bags that is ubiquitous in every school?

Buhari made this statement under a situation of insistent pressure to provide an answer without having the time to think it through. In fact his first reaction was that banning the hijab was no option.

Nobody is going to ban any hijab. The farthest anybody would go is to start an appeal campaign for women in the areas concerned to reduce the size of the hijab.

May the terrorists never succeed.
