SIM Registration: FG To Sanction Telcos Over Customers’ Harassment
By Chima Akwaja
— Jan 21, 2015

The federal government has decried the way and manner Nigerians, especially women, are being treated in their bid to comply with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) directive on the registration of the subscriber identification module (SIM) in use, threatening to deal with erring telecom companies henceforth.

A statement by the special assistant on media to the minister of communications, Mr Adebayo Shittu, Mr Victor Oluwadamilar, said that this has become necessary, following the barrage of compliants by telecoms subscribers across the country.

According to him, “The minister’s office had been inundated with complaints from Nigerians, particularly women in veil, over the way they were being treated, sometimes humiliated, by the workers of telecommunications companies nationwide.

In some of the complaints, women in pudah were required to remove their veils in public despite requests by such women that a place should be provided for them away from public glare and for only female officials to attend to them. All entreaties by these women failed, rather they were allegedly accused of being Boko Haram agents and refused registration after several altercations ensued in some of the registration centres.”

The minister, who frowned at the development, urged the telecommunications companies involved to accord maximum respect to Nigerian, particularly women, by respecting their feminine nature and religious disposition, moreso since the Nigerian Constitution has guaranteed the right to freedom of thought, conscience, and religion of all citizens and that such right should never be violated by executive or administrative lawlessness, high handedness, and insensitivity.

He noted that Nigerians deserve unreserved apologies from the concerned telecoms companies, saying that it is inhuman and unacceptable to treat Nigerians in such a cruel manner as it is a universal maxim that the right of even minorities are respected worldwide. He, therefore, urged the telecommunications companies to train and retrain their workers on the right and more civilized ways of treating their customers, adding that sanction may be applied against any erring company that refuse to comply with the policy of the Nigerian government under the change agenda of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Trashy excuse! Were these women born with veils into this world? Their faces had been seen and gotten tired of being seen b4 they began putting on thos veils. Or will people go blind if their faces are seen? Or are their faces made of gold that people would be tempted to steal them away?

NCC should just have muslim registration centers and Christian registration centers different from each other because we christians do not want to see any juju looking, burial ceremony dressed, face covering, black garb wearing boko haram candidate anywhere near us.

Dem no dey open their face inside their house? Dem no dey pull the yeye black cloth if they want to poo? How can I hold an honest conversation with someone whose face I cannot see but who can see mine.

This Minister is an embarassment to the Buhri Govt for utterisg this sort of rubbish.

First, there is a reason (Security) for insisting this Biometric registration of SIMS Card

We are in the middle of an insurgency war

Women in Purdah are the ones boko haram have been using to commit so many Suicide Bombing

Women in Purdah cannot be "Biometrically identified" without removing their Purdah covering

Security does not make "special exclusionary rules" for one religion, over others. It will be classed as discrimination.

They should remove the "cover", take the pictures and put it back on within less than three minutes. That cant make them miss "heaven" now?

Finally, what is the nonsense about this Purdah sef? Does seeing a woman's face (if she is not a potential security risk) tantamount to have sexual relationship with her.... in a telecoms office?

All these Sharia fanatics should STFU and stop being Hypocrites. The Nation's Security is over and above their deluded religious fanaticism.
Just do your SIM registration and buzz-off with your hideous face covering.

Haters are always gonna hate. These peoples only request is for their face to be captured in private, and only by females, is that too much to ask? Not like their request affects anyone negatively. That was the same way one way recently assaulted or so in Lagos recently.
There will only be peace when we respect the right of others in this country especially religious.

...and don't give me that BS of were they born with veil, were u also born with cloths

U seem to have a high opinion of yourself. Many of my friends are muslim but they aint crazy. I am not fanatical and if I am then its as a fanatical Christian which translates to me being very peaceful as unlike islam, Christianity is the true peaceful worship.

Fyi I am not Yoruba but can read and write it as well as speak hausa which shows I have mingled well. Wether we like it or not the truth has to be said... islam is a cancer.. it destroys... even my Bible condemns it but asks us to love them. I dont hate muslims... I hate their beliefs....Muslims do not kill but their beliefs make them kill. Dwell on that quote.

Sir Uselessgoat! IMO, thats so wrong and foolish of the Minister himself and the Wife too. When i read the news, i firstly had a loud laugh cause i dont see why a reasonable educated person would want to do BIOMETRIC CAPTURING with a covered face!
.
And the minister himself didn't know his wife would have to unveil to participate in the capturing? He should have gotten the sim with his details and then hand it over to the wife.
.
So if she has a case with the Police or the Court, she would attend with that veil? Abeg the religion is suppose to have a prepared exception to it.

Let me give u an instance with something that happened in Australia. A nigerian travelled to australia a country he had been living in for 10yrs. He went there with foodstuff from nigeria and packaged them normally but australian law says all packaging must be properly done in original packaging for easy identification. He just wrapped them in paperbags and labelled them.

They stopped him and after asking him what the items were he said they were all food and they asked why they were not packaged properly so they would have to check them and run tests on them. The man started ranting and threatening to sue since its food he brought back for his kids. All his shouting did was to further land him into trouble by attracting security agents who now had to carry out a body search on him as his actions were looking suspicious.

At the end of the day the tests were done and the the test and search came out negative but their law was upheld.

When issues bordering on security is concerned nobody is excusable. Religion or no religion.... everyone must follow every security requirement for the greater good.
