brabus: twinskenny: This shows that the guy is not a serious person. Here is somebody who is out of work and complaining of inability to feed his family getting a response from one of the top builders here who has showcased his projects with addresses and he is telling the person to call him. If iam Segcymoor, he has already failed a simple test and will not employ such a person because he will bring such a lazy attitude into the work. 1 Like |

EgunMogaji: Egun I agree that wood is underused in Nigeria, but could it also be something to do with the climate, in places like UAE as well, i rarely saw wood used in construction, in fact their mode of construction is very similar to that of Nigeria, i.e foundation style etc, most of the time they use Pile as the terrain is sandy desert (loose soil that can move). One of the reasons why wood may be under used is the treatment aspect, when i was doing my roofing, they had to get some chemical mixture and used that to cover the wood using a brush or broom or whatever, whereas in western countries all you need to do is go into a hardware store, tell them you want treated wood and not soft/white wood and you can use that externally. It can last for hundred of years and nothing will happen to it, as long as its free from damp which can sometimes cause insects to bore into it. As you know, most houses the flooring is suspended wooden flooring and in the UK, concrete floored houses are frowned upon and they are often hard to finance with a mortgage, and in fact self they are a bit harder to sell. Its the opposite in Nija, the first thing you will hear is that thief can cut through the floor and enter upstairs. Abi Brabus fit use angle grinder cut am steal cement & iron rod lol.. |

mavverick: The problem with timber construction in nigeria are enormous. It includes 1.non availability of building codes on structural use of timbers 2. Poor technology and lack of adequate power to seasoned and cut wood into various dimensions 3. Decline of our forest reserve and so many other factors. The use of our timber as a partition material may be more expensive than conventional masonry work but when use as suspended floors it is much cheaper than reinforced floors |

brabus: Their is this foundation solution I want to discuss with you.. .. Waffle foundation type use on a loose soil, similar to raft foundation. It is more cost effective and can stay well on loose soil. Volume of concrete is reduced, foundation is monotically cast, no need for sand filling and reduced Formwork since only the exterior perimeter will be board |

brabus: Maybe you didnt read very well, obviously your mind is on what to pack inside that ford white van (:-) and cart away. In one of the pictures you have shown whilst its that of wood used externally, the fabric of the roof still shields it away from the elements to some extent. I think what would be nice to see is houses where the external facade is actually wood. In North America and some places in Europe, what they sometimes do is use treated wood facade/cladding, 100mm or thicker insulation (Celotex) that's what its called in Europe not sure about USA, then plasterboard and you skim with multifinish (plaster). That's your wall, so it meets insulation building regs (building regulations) and it well insulated, even better (insulation wise) than un-insulated brick walls self which is 210mm solid brick wall. I am guessing in Nigeria, its the opposite you wouldn't want heat trapped inside the house, but need more ventilation. 1 Like

Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by abdulwastecx(m): 1:35pm On Jan 22, 2016 |
brabus: I will highlight it this way. 1. A structural design will explain carried out to determined the size of beams, rib beam and waffle size. 2. Using a waffle size of 600 mm x 600 mm and rib beam of 150 mm by 300mm and a topping of 75mm. 3. The edge beams and beams along column areas are designed and reinforced like continuous beam upside down. 4. The real beam are also designed this way. Advantages includes 1. Speed of construction is fast. All the rib can be lay out within a day, perimeter Formwork done within another day, reinforcement work is faster and smaller. 2. It cut cost of Formwork of say raft foundation because you only need to do perimeter Formwork. 3. It cut cost of excavation since you only need to cut out top soil and foundation founded on sub grade. 4. It cut out cost of filling of foundation and the logistics involved in filling. 5. Volume of concrete is greatly reduced compare to raft foundation. 6.settlement is is uniform since it is monotically constructed unlike some of our raft foundation here. |

Shyte literally needs to flow uphill. To my septic tank that is I want to try not to have to sink new tanks but my existing tank is uphill from the new building. So I'm thinking of a scheme where I create a sub tank down below that I then pump the contents uphill to the main tank. Any thoughts, ideas, rumors, innuendos, etc |

EgunMogaji:...installing a decorative stamped concrete floor on your property is a good decision. But u have to be careful in other not to fall for cheap offer. Some people are using fake materials there by spoiling the reputable image of stamped concrete job in Nigeria. Some have gone to the extent of downloading and posting the pictures of another people job which I think is an act of pirating and is very bad and must be condemned in nairaland. If u must post a picture of another person's job, I thing u also should make it known to viewers. Below are do and don't in stamped concrete. (1)Use color hardener which is specially made fore stamped concrete alone, avoid the use of ordinary interlocking pigment which most nigerians use. (2) Use imported acrylic sealer for polishing, avoid the one Aba sealer. (3)Original release agent is the best, avoid the use of water sealant mixed with black cement. (4)Choose the right aggregate and slab thickness. The standard thickness of a stamped concrete job should be at least 10 to 8cm for drive way. Pls don't go below that. (5) Insist ur potential contractor must lay iron mesh or 8mm iron rod on the floor before pouring the mixed aggregate(concrete) and if u choose 8mm iron rod, it should be tied at most 1.5 square foot spaced. (6) Reinforce and sub-grade properly. (7)Don't ask for site sample alone because almost every body can offer a beautiful sample but will mess up the site when given the job., If u have time, tell ur potential contractor to take u to a site he has personally completed and when he take u to the site, ask people around the if the contractor actually did the job. I know what am talking about. Or if u don't have time, ask for a written quality assurance guarantee. Am not saying am saying am the best but will proudly say am among the few best. lol. (Expansion joint is very important. Choose an expert to reduce ur financial and time cost of supervision. Inspect the originality of materials once it's brought into ur site, and again make sure the contractor brought the material into ur site sealed. Would have love to send the pictures of the original materials here but the network is very bad to upload the pic. Click below to see the pictures of my completed jobhttp://www.nairaland.com/2278774/call-me-increte-decorative-stamped. Pls feel free to ask me any question. |
