MrPresident1: That is the correct interpretation. Whoever is the Ooni of Ife is the Spiritual leader who sit on the throne of Oduduwa. The political ranking is Alafin, Oba of Benin and others We are after the unity of Yoruba's and hierarchy is not the concern here. 2 Likes |

Shymm3x: That is not actually true, otherwise, Ooni would have visited Alaafin first, then Oba of Benin. But he started with Ogunsua of Modakeke. The first 3 oba's he visited was to do with politics. I will say no more. Definitely, Awujale is the longest serving Yoruba monarch as of today, 56 years by April 2016. And the Oba of Benin is indisposed. |

vigasimple: There are so many issues that make the Yoruba race a very unique race, due to the political exigencies of the day not a few of those issues should be permanently relegated to the background. Everyone who discovers something hidden should keep it hidden, especially if it is in the best interest for the larger good. The Yoruba race is a church, hierarchy of Obas is of the littlest importance! 2 Likes |

vigasimple:Maybe because the Benin kingship is vacant for now, but Modakeke is not among oduduwa direct children. Onisabe of Sabe and Onipopo of Popo are both in Benin republic. 1 Like |

This king remind me of king Solomon in the bible. - young, humble and wise. His mission, I suppose to re-unite the Yoruba race, and bring us together under one umbrella. |

IKU BABA YEYE(one who orders death sentence) ALASE EKEJI ORISA(second in command to gods) OBA TI N FOBA JE(the king that crown kings) OBA TI N GBA IDOBALE OBA(the king that accepts kings salute).....this is just an extract from alaafin of oyo eulogies. At the peak of oyo empire, yoruba glory was at its acme, oyo dominates political leadership of the entire yoruba kingdoms, our unity was like collection of brooms tied together to do the sweeping, the empire created strong defence tactics against the neigbouring enemies and were forced to pay tributes at oyos will in those days.Alaafin of oyo confirmed the appointments of prominent obas such as alake of egbaland, osile oke ona, olowu of owu, onisabe of sabe, alaketu of ketu, owa obokun of ijesha land etc before their independence conquests.Alaafin approved the establishment of other thrones such as awujale of ijebuland, soun of ogbomoso, olubadan of ibadan, timi of ede etc. Oyo dynasty designed prominent military rulers for yoruba such as bashorun and aare ona kakanfo.Alaafin has the final say on disputes between obas and other other yoruba kingdoms.oyo conquest expanded yoruba land greatly at the peak of the empire.ile ife was recognise as cradle and sacred place for yoruba.Hence it's duty of oyo to protect ife from attack and no oba was recognized by alaafin but the chief priest called ooni. Ooni is a title derived from oonirisa which means the priest. Oduduwa being the first Ooni had seven sons of which oranyan (oyo empire builder) was the lastborn. At old age, it was his servant Obalufon that took care of him and worked on his behalf because his son had left ife to establish their kingdoms. When the progenitor died, Obalufon took over and his duties was simply spiritual in a sacred place -ile ife- of which oduduwa sons allowed him to continue since it was impossible for them to leave their domains and rule in ife. They labelled him arole oduduwa meaning oduduwa house anchor but his hierachy cannot superseed the seven sons and that is one of the reasons owa obokun of ijesha ( one of oduduwa sons) will not relinquish power to the new ooni in osun state traditional rulers council. I support his unity moves but if he knows his limit among yoruba obas, he will succeed. 3 Likes 2 Shares |

honifome: Alaafin enthroned Alaketu, Olowu and Owa Ilesa; his big brothers? The thrones that have existed before that of Alaafin? Ooni Orisa (Ooni'risa) Ooni the Orisa means priest? Obalufon the Ugbo became the priest to you abi? Owa is just being petty, he his looking at the occupant of the throne in Ife in relation to his age rather than the throne itself in relation to his own. Calm down with the falsity sir. 1 Like |

PeterKbaba:Why do people like to create unnecessary controversy. There is no such thing as Hierarchy of Kings in Yorubaland. The Yoruba mythology about Ife is NOT that Yorubas originated from Ife but MANKIND did , In short Ife is the Yoruba version of "Garden of Eden" It is important to pause and digest this for while. There never was such a thing as a "Yoruba" Nation as we know it today until around the time of colonialism. Basically you had different nations Ijebu ,Egba Sabe ,Oyo,Ekiti, etc who saw themselves as DIFFERENT and INDEPENDENT nations with similarities in language and custom but no aspiration to one nation. The closest there has been to a hierarchy was under the Oyo Empire. It is important to pay attention to that word EMPIRE . It reflects the relationship between Oyo and its vassals who were forever trying to rid themselves of the yoke. They were DIFFERENT NATIONS. One does not use the word empire for a single people. Now we are in Nigeria and it is convenient to unify bu thee is nothing like king of kings. Empires came and went throughout history and today the main empire is the USA . Queen Elizabeth cannot claim to be Queen of queens To then say on the basis of a now defunct empire that Oyo has any divine supremacy is like saying once upon a time there was a Roman or a Greek or an Ottoman Empire who has supremacy over others, clearly a ridiculous proposition. Oyo at one time was a dominant military force but by the time the British came Ibadan was the CURRENT champion and Oyo was derelict. Empires owe their supremacy to force but cannot live on past glory. There never was a Yoruba nation or even an aspiration for such. Ooni of Ife was a largely irrelevant king for much of "Yoruba" history and in practical terms UNDER Oyo as long as the empire lasted Ooni was never an Alase in Yorubaland as far as any other Oba was concerned 2 Likes |

Please don't distort history, the Ooni is not an Oba. He's a chief priest that became a regent. And there's no hierarchy of Yoruba obas except in the case of the 7 sons of Okanbi. Everyone rules over their domain. What is important is mutual respect. 1 Like |

seguntijan: Palace protocol officers. When they blow that horn and sound the gong it signals procession of visit or homage by a crown head. Each Yoruba Oba is supposed to keep this crown tradition but modernity has taken it away. When you see state secret service running alongside, infront and behind the President's car do you ever ask if they will run all the way back to Abuja? Act like you got some wisdom. 4 Likes |

seunajia: I dont know why he is being called Oba. This misnomer should be corrected...his title is Ooni. Yoruba has two distinct order of rulership 1. Divine; 2. State Ooni is a divine order and so is Araba and Oluwo Oba is the state order and so is Baale and Balogun One is a custodian of celestial deities, the other is custodian of terrestrial deities. The two together form a balance...you cannot have one without the other. So what part of this balance is difficult for Omo Yoruba to understand? 1 Like |
