gtb didn't make any mistake. it was a strategy to use your card by deceiving customers. that was why they left the student account (gtcrea8) cos they know students will cry. GTB DECEIVED THEIR CUSTOMERS to make more money.

How are they making more money when many of you are owing them
Those involved should just visit the bank and try and get transactions cancellation or reversal. It takes days before transactions like this is fully completed,or just visit the bank and get the matter resolved .your transactions can always be reversed .

how do u cancel a transaction that the item you purchased is already shipped and in transit what kind of reputation are you trying to build?

Nigerians love awoof that ruins things for them.

Bros visit your bank. Goods don't ship until payment has been fully verified and completed by the bank . As long as you are on debit the payment hasn't been cleared . Go to your PayPal account and see the transactions details .you will see that the payment you are having issues with hasn't been cleared. Once there is an issue ,banks wont authorise the transaction, the ones which have been shipped are the one which payments have been fully completed for. Just visit your bank for more clarifications

This wasn't a sensible risk,it was obvious there was a mixup somewhere and since it was on a weekend all payment were put on hold. How can one bank be selling at 199 when all the rest are selling at 290 to 300
Some ppl warned ppl here but many didn't take their warning seriously ,the problem with Nigerians is that we always believe we are too smart and we can always beat the system and in the process we hurt ourselves real bad.

that is their headache. i am happy i have evidence against them that i was charged N199. if they make too much noise then i will push them to ICPC because CBN might not be able to handle the issue since is a corrupt practices. Imagine a Bank tricking their customers for their benefit, this can only happen in Nigeria because we like suffering and smiling. i think we should start by creating a thread about it on nairaland while the mods would help us push it to the front page. Enough of deceit from banks. They are to be protecting the customers and not robbing them blind.

Noticed something.
Made a total of 5 online transactions on Friday. The first three I made before 4pm where charged at N199 and I got the notifications by Saturday morning. The other two I made after 4pm where initially charged at N199 but later got changed to N299 and I got the notification in the early hours of this morning. I played on the side of caution and utilised less than $100 so didn't affect the account much.

In anticipation of such an action occurring, I contacted a CBN staff over the weekend and he gave me some CBN guidelines and books concerning such issues as well as the channels to follow. I'm at work now, bear with me till 4pm and I will paste the relevant sections here.
Account is currently negative but since it's less than N5000, I'm not bothered.

don't mind him, if you get to the bank, they will ask you to initiate the cancellation with the seller as they cannot handle cancellation.

it is not true, the payment has cleared because that N199 covers the exchange rate, any additional charge is Gtbank ridiculous gain. that transaction wouldn't have gone in the first place if the rate did not cover the transactions initiated. They gave us debit cards and not credit cards.

Time to abandon my GTB account. They intentionally did it, with reduced patronage since the hike in exchange rate, they decided to reduce it and charge later, knowing that a lot of people will fall for it.

How do they expect me not to grab the opportunity, as if they informed me before increasing their rate from 220 to 300.
Besides, it wasn't lower than the official CBN rate.
My only wahala now is my friends and family members accounts that are on negative balance. None of them wan abondon account ni!

stanbic sold for 199.5 for along time while others were selling above 230. so in Nigeria Anything can happen.

mind you, the 10usd i did in the morning was charged at 199 and debited at 199. it was d ones i did in the evening that were put on hold at 199 before i hit the daily limit that got debited at 299. my account is not on negative because its a calculated risk and i left the money there. i know i will make my money back but there won't be any profit.

when black market rate came down from N380 to N280, we did not hear network glitch but gtbank rate came down and all we hear is network glitch. who are they deceiving? if black market could come down and people took advantage of it, who are they to blame us for taking the advantage of gtbank rate abi are we not talking about the same exchange rate or does gtbank have gold attached to theirs because i didn't get any?
please if anybody received gold along with the N199 rate, the person should indicate so i can collect mine from gtbank.

i withdrew from my account abroad on friday and was charged at 218 per 1 euro on friday and saturday only to be charged 328 on sunday. Don't have explanation for this yet. But should bank charge students abroad with the parallel market rate. this is abnormal from all point of view. thank you.

standard chattered has moved to 278 since since that update. I thought being a foreign bank he couldn't influence them but he did.

Wale is not an ordinary banker, he is the overall treasurer of all the banks in Nigeria. If you know a banker, ask him the work of the treasury department and you will understand what I am saying.

But 278 is s till lower than 280 isn't it? Did he forget his Stanbic Mission Statement this time?

I don't think you have the right to say which risk was sensible or not sensible. Leave the risk takers to decide that. Personally I made a transaction of $970 and I knew the risk involved. There are people who still make transactions even when they know the rate is N299, so it's not like the transaction when through without paying at all. For me personally (don't know of others), my risk was losing between 2-3% and my reward was N100/$. Compare risk vs reward and you should see that, that is a green light. That is what we entrepreneurs do.

It is very clear this was a deliberate and grand play by GTB. They deliberately did this towards the weekend so that the news spreads from Friday to Saturday when they know full deduction wouldn't be made will Monday so they can rake in as much as possible. I have a recording of the call I made to customer care to confirm the rate and the lady told me their current rate is N199 on Friday.
