culcid:
Time to abandon my GTB account. They intentionally did it, with reduced patronage since the hike in exchange rate, they decided to reduce it and charge later, knowing that a lot of people will fall for it.

How do they expect me not to grab the opportunity, as if they informed me before increasing their rate from 220 to 300.
Besides, it wasn't lower than the official CBN rate.
My only wahala now is my friends and family members accounts that are on negative balance. None of them wan abondon account ni!
Awoof they run belle I swear

i think gtb is doing something illegal here. after holding my money at ₦299, they still went ahead to put my account in negative meaning i have been charged twice at 299. i won't go near that account until a months time. by then i will see if this illegality is corrected..

Na waa o... E just tire me as I dey read all these N199/N299 GTB wahala.

Human beings are wired to complain only in the state of loss and we easily forget the good things that we experienced. It's pathetic that it's engrained in all aspects of our life, I can't stop wondering why a relationship fails because of a forgivable wrongdoing.

Most of us were happy when we got refunds at an higher rate but will be quick to copy CBN when we are shortchanged. We lack a moral standing, I feign at the excuse that we have always been cheated by the banks and it was time to reap back our benefits too.

I bet some people will cancel those N199 orders and get the refunds back at N299. It's ok, who no like free money, that's what we say.

I was tempted to buy stuffs but since I knew the rates are ever dynamic, one magic go happen at the end of the day. It's funny that some even said GTB can't post a negative balance to their accounts, I laughed hard when I started seeing screenahots of negative balances.

Abandon your account, yes, that's the way to go but remember you can be easily traced with KYC details and BVN, you're just so culpable.

Someone on another thread sometimes ago had a Ecobank account which he stopped using for a long time, charges had accrued to the account Ecobank style. He was going to apply for a loan in another bank but was told he owed another bank money, he had to go settle his bills and properly close the account before his loan was processed.

So the consequences of our today is based on the actions and inactions of our yesterday. Karma is a bi*ch right? It beats my imagination when we are clamoring for change but we are not ready to change ourselves.

Before you quote me with mentions and stuff, I'm with everyone who wants these banks to be accountable for every kobo they have taken illicitly. We need a sanitation of the system, a total overhaul. I'll join any class action suit with tenable evidence against these banks, and I believe our voice will be heard

Are we ready?

that is their headache. i am happy i have evidence against them that i was charged N199. if they make too much noise then i will push them to ICPC because CBN might not be able to handle the issue since is a corrupt practices. Imagine a Bank tricking their customers for their benefit, this can only happen in Nigeria because we like suffering and smiling. i think we should start by creating a thread about it on nairaland while the mods would help us push it to the front page. Enough of deceit from banks. They are to be protecting the customers and not robbing them blind.

STUDENTS ABROAD CRY OUT: Nigerian Banks Charging Black Market Rate – The Whistler
FEBRUARY 29, 2016
Nigerian students across the world have accused the country’s banks of charging black market rates when they withdraw their money from foreign Automated Teller Machines, ATMs.

Breaking the ice, Dr. Ameen Indabawa, a student in Ukraine in a youtube video that has gone viral and shared thousands of times, showed how his Nigerian bank took more than N150 extra, equivalent of what he said sells at the black market in Ukraine.

In a step by step videoing, Indabawa lamented how several of his colleagues are being ripped off and running low on cash due to the underhand practices of the banks, appealing to the Central Bank of Nigeria to halt the “daylight robbery.”

Offering some form of advice, Obi Nzewi, said foreign students should desist from using their cards abroad, rather should apply to the CBN for forex for their upkeep.

Nzewi said, “Clearly few in this thread understand how international card transactions are settled. Let me inform the young man in the video that he must not use his card abroad. He can fill out CBN Form A to apply for forex for his upkeep in Ukraine.”

Speaking of her own predicament, Tonia Emelu, claimed that she has tried using Western Union but was told it is suspended for now in sending money out of the country.

“The funniest part now is that you try to use Western Union and they tell you it’s banned for now…I can’t even deal,” she wrote.

Another Nigerian in Ghana, Abdul Rich Noni, said, “same thing happens here in Ghana,” while Joe Derin Adebisi based in Germany, lamented that “same thing happened to me in Germany last month. 1€ is 315 naira.”

Ikemefuna Afreeca, who did not specify where he was writing from stated: “Please write to the regulatory bodies like CBN to address these issues. It is probable you all might be due a refund. If they don’t respond you can complain to the African union because it sounds like extortion.”

Offering his own piece of advice, Benjamin Akpan argued that “you cannot buy at CBN rate, Nigerians you buy at parallel rate outside.”

Yewande Adebisi Ogunsanwo recounting her experience said those who think they can get it at the official rate abroad to resell at the black market are mistaken.

Hear her: “For people that think we want to sell it on black market, the same thing happened when I used my card in New Look Store. I was charged at black market rate. I understand cashing out, how about buying online and in stores. Will I sell the clothes in exchange for naira on black market? It is unfair. Let’s be sincere. The banks are fraudulent.”

tosinjay:

Maybe because people hardly use their card due to the rate they've decided to do film trick or wetin dey happen?
tosinjay:
This GTB rate is like chameleon, i quoted 299.6/$ and others said 199/$ so i dey see say another person say 274/$ then 213/$ and 199/$ again.. Well apart from that $5.10 i spent i no spend again. If una like spend. E go just be like wen you owe bank and use your house as collateral. They will evict people's money oo... Like toluxa1 GTB la main la account.
tosinjay:
I sorry for person wey go go use GTB card now take make payment. That thing isn't #199. I was drooling for it already. Dem just fall person hand, funny enough, even if they charge you that amount you're still in their hands.
tosinjay:

It's no good to owe bank ooo. Una wey una account fit mistakenly enter negative.
tosinjay:

So after all what i suspected was true. We talk am nah. Perhaps they didn't wanna play students that's why they didn't allow that with GTcrea8

it is not true, the payment has cleared because that N199 covers the exchange rate, any additional charge is Gtbank ridiculous gain. that transaction wouldn't have gone in the first place if the rate did not cover the transactions initiated. They gave us debit cards and not credit cards.

Please if your account entered debit with GT, go and borrow money from somewhere and sort it out. It is a big dent on your integrity which can easily be found out in this era of BVN.

You can loose contracts, be denied bank loans, rejected on job interviews or even get sacked from job because of it. Account on debit is a sign of gross irresponsibility. The longer it stays the more severe the damage.

The account cannot be closed and anywhere your BVN shows up, it will show up as well.

You all know GT rate before you made that transaction, all these pretence should stop.
