President Muhammadu Buhari has confirmed Nigeria’s membership of the Islamic Coalition Against Terrorism being spearheaded by Saudi Arabia amidst speculations of alleged plan to Islamise the country.

The President made the disclosure in an interview he granted to Al-Jazeera during his recent visit to Doha, Qatar, while the interview was aired on Saturday.

When asked whether Nigeria was part of the Islamic coalition, Buhari answered in the affirmative.

He attributed the reason behind the decision to the fact that there are terrorists in Nigeria who claim to be Muslims.

“We are part of it (the Islamic coalition) because we’ve got terrorists in Nigeria that everybody knows which claim that they are Islamic.

“So, if there’s an Islamic coalition to fight terrorism, Nigeria will be part of it because we are casualties of Islamic terrorism,” the President said.

Buhari said he discussed Nigeria’s membership of the coalition with King Salman Bin Abdul-Aziz during their meeting in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia when he visited the country recently.

He however did not disclose how the membership of the Islamic coalition would be beneficial to Nigeria when asked to do so.

He said it would be wrong to disclose the details to the media.

“Well, that we mentioned under Lake Chad Basin Commission, our regional grouping compromising Cameroon, Chad, Niger, Nigeria and Benin and we dedicated a certain number of troops to be deployed in our own sub-region and I don’t think we have to tell the press the details of that,” he simply said.

Buhari however justified Nigeria’s membership of the Islamic coalition, saying there is nothing wrong in joining the coalition since members of the Boko Haram sect fighting in Nigeria have claimed they are Muslims even when their activities are anti-Islam.

He added that the Boko Haram itself had declared loyalty to ISIS

He said, “I’ve just told you it is the Boko Haram itself that declared loyalty to ISIS.

“ISIS is basically based in Islamic countries. Now, if there’s a coalition to fight Islamic terrorism, why can’t Nigeria be part of it, while those that are fighting in Nigeria as Boko Haram claim to be Muslims? But the way they are doing it is anti-Islamic.”

When confronted with the fact that Nigeria has large populations of both Muslims and Christians and that some Christians are complaining that he is giving Islamic identity to the country by his actions, Buhari wondered why the Christians who are complaining have not deemed it fit to confront members of Boko Haram in the North East or militants in the South South

“Why can’t those Christians that complained go and fight terrorism in Nigeria or fight the militancy in the South. It’s Nigeria that matters, not the opinion of some religious bigots,” he declared.

The President however denied any attempt to change the religious identity of the country.

He said, “How can I change the religious identity of Nigeria?

“No religion advocates hurting the innocent and just because the Muslims are the ones that claim to be Boko Haram and they are killing innocent people whether in the church, in the bus or in the market place, then I will just sit and look at them because I too am a Muslim? Islam is against injustice in any form.”

That was simply an objective statement.

The focus is the fight against terror, any other issue (such as islamization) is simply a baseless distraction.

Shut up , he said what I would have said and I am an active Christian. So many people in the south have this strong opinion that intends to debase anyone north of the Niger and Muslims as inconsequential beasts, lacking in education and therefore should not be considered.

They are more concerned if they hear of a church bombed but never care about the more than 5 mosques bombed and Muslims killed.

Nigeria has an equal population of Christians and Muslims, we have provided support for western Christian based caolitions under NATO and done their bidding in Liberia, Sierra Leon and Somalia without anyone having a problem.

We are suffering from a serious dreg, individuals who have taken territory in the past and have allied with ISIS a global threath all under the false banner of Islamic idealisms, it is most appropriate that the central country for correct Islamic doctrine establishes a coalition of fellow Muslims who would crush these animals be it Boko Haram , ISIS, Al Queda in the magreb, Al shabab and Nigeria being a victim of these animals should be part of that.

The president is correct any Christians who have a problem with it should join the fight, so many times good Muslims have been told to address this matter and now they are doing just that.

What stupid suspicions are those. He is going to match soldiers into your house and ask you to convert to Islam or ask the army to shut down every single church in the country, or how exactly does he intend to islamise Nigeria.

I'm sure even God is rather infuriated at your bigotry, bitterness or stupidity, whichever one is responsible for your foolish conclusion.

North of the Nigerian border is chad a very large territory predominantly Muslims, an unstable country politically and a wide expanse of land which their military cannot protect, that country is bordered with another nation, Lybia where IS has taken full control of several posts and are fixing to expand operations with the aim of occupying land from Tripoli to Abuja (this exact statement ISIS have claimed themselves) , there is Also shabab who have been causing havoc in Kenya , mali and Somalia.

So if you have had your head in lala land , it's time to pluck it out, there is a war out there and it is fixing for Nigeria, no way we can get out of it.

No. Buhari didn't say that. He wouldnt dare. He didn't smoke FFK's weed so there's no way he would have said that. But if he did, we are really in more trouble than we think.

No they are not going to march soldiers into anyones house that will be too obvious. But slowly subtly......they will keep aligning with islamic countries, making laws like the evangelism law in Kaduna, carrying of southern girls to the north and marrying them. All way na way.

Do you know how ridiculous you sound, Evangelism laws in kaduna !, you should stop reading blogs and start thinking for yourself, there is no evangelism law in kaduna, there is however a law which bans the distribution of media containing hate speech, use of megaphones which brings about noise pollution, use of external PA systems outside mosques and churches , public preaching (christian, Muslim or otherwise) without a permit from the state. This law is one which exists in all sane countries of the world I have visited, it is there to curb false prophets and Islamic clerics who are preaching dangerous doctrine, prevents the likes of Rev king and El-Zhakarsy, Mohammed Yusuf etc from ever springing up again.

Individuals like yourself who have never been to the north would not know that Kaduna has a large population of northern Christians, many mega churches have a significant operation base there, from winners to RCCG.

And please stop these false reports of rampant abductions, an abduction for whatever purpose is a crime, be it for rituals, or forced marriage which accounts for less than 0.1% of the over 100 abductions daily in this country.

I am yet to hear of people going on twitter to speak of the sad cases of people who are victims of rituals , organ theft, sex slaves to Europe and Middle east. Those are where the alarming numbers exists and the prime perpetrators are south of the Niger.

Wake up !

Unlearned you say, I consider you a chieftain of the unlearned. It's only important to someone who is equally as insensitive of the composition of this country as Mr President. When you see Koreans in your back yard with whom you cannot hold a single discussion nor make a case with then you would understand the grave nature of such decisions. Lest you forget there are other coalitions putting up with ISIL but the canny one and his religious bigotry got alternative plots. Why should you care? It's not Johnathan right?

What message is he passing across? Nigeria, the same Nigeria he once promised could get rid of Boko haram if he were sworn in had hit the murky waters of reality. I am yet to see Mr. President do anything new and resourceful in this dispensation. Good arrests though & good effort trying to retrieve stolen assets but have you asked your self why state allocations keep dropping? Money is seriously changing pockets from PDP purses to the APC but I don't care where it ends up.
