http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/03/nairas-flop-is-doomsday-foretold/

It is too soon to forget how Sanusi, as the immediate-past Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, turned that body into a Republic within a Republic. Indeed, the collapse of the Naira today is doomsday foretold. We saw it coming. You can’t run the CBN with the type of impunity with which Idi-Amin ran the economy of Uganda and not expect the type of disaster we have in our hands today. Students of history will also easily remember that the Deutschemark suffered the same fate in post World-War II Germany.

Again, Sanusi represents an archetype of the average Nigerian in authority. Space will only permit us to provide a synopsis of some of his deeds: In about 63 “intervention projects” mainly in Northern Nigeria and sparsely in the South, Sanusi turned CBN into a Father Christmas by doling out about N163 billion from the public till without any legislative approval and authorisation in utter defiance of the provisions of Sections 80(1) and 80(2) of our 1999 Constitution, which deal with issues of revenue and expenditure of the Federation.

n August 2009, the CBN, under Sanusi’s watch pumped N400 billion of public fund into bailing out Afribank, Intercontinental Bank, Union Bank, Oceanic Bank and Finbank. The CBN single-handedly decided which of the commercial banks manifested distress signs and how much to give to them, without recourse to any legislative approval.

In the eye of the Financial Reporting Council, FRC, the CBN under Sanusi’s watch embarked on a most reckless spending spree, the type of squander-mania never imagined in the history of the CBN, including N38.23 billion alleged missing in 2013. This amount was alleged to have been paid to the CBN subsidiary, MINT, but it never got to its destination. In 2011, CBN was said to have paid N38 billion to the Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Company, NSPMC, for the printing of banknotes, when in the entire year, the total turnover of NSPMC was only N29 billion!

With Sanusi out of the system, the same people who facilitated his deeds are still in the system, doing for other corrupt elements what they did for Sanusi. And so, the chain continues.

In Sanusi’s years, where there was no immediate cash to carry out his escapade, he proceeded to print the banknotes. Who, then, is still wondering why the Naira today is barely worth the paper on which it is printed? For all we know, a nation’s economy is like a fowl – it comes home to roost!

Yesterday, it was Sanusi; today, it is Dasuki; but between Sanusi and Dasuki, there are at least a thousand Nigerians who should not be walking our streets in freedom – if we are really serious about fighting corruption.

Una no go hear word with this Oando.

Anyway my rule number one is NEVER buy a loss making stock...

A stock is part ownership of a company and its number one return is dividend not capital appreciation (a side effect)

Buying a loss making stock is speculation not investing ... TOH

just as saying Oando will trade at N30 next week....words are powerful. So beacaue she said i have died.. she will die abi.

We have been shouting Naija is great and she is now great

Jarkbauer, just saying "I have died" once won't make her drop dead right away, God forbid.
But, even if one does not wish to practice positive confession,
there must be some spirit that taught ancient humanity the wisdom to say "GOODmorning",
even when things don't seem to be going well, instead of "BADmorning" sometimes.

All is well.

Re: Nigerian Stock Exchange Market Pick Alerts by megainvest: 10:35am On Mar 17, 2016
I don't think this is the time to gamble with the loss making stocks. I think the party is over for them. Rather, I think it's time for the real profitable stocks to resume the flying.

This is just my opinion, not a buy or sell recommendation pls.

In a sane economy, when the Fed reduces interest rates, the equity market is bouyed as some investments are transferred to equity.

With risk free rates, (NTB) specifically around 7% max for the 364 days tenor, it baffles me that with a dividend yield of above 10% for some stocks, there is no immediate positive reaction. This is an anomaly unless the argument below is in place.

One could argue that capital preservation is not certain,( gain 10% on dividend yield, lose 5% on capital loss) or that the risk involved in investing in Nigerian equities considering the macro economic environment warrants a higher risk premium than 3%. (10%-7%).

If the above is the case, then, we are in for a long thing. Despite all, I go chop my dividend and at the least sell my equity holdings at cost price.

nio68:
with the inflation rate now in double digits and increasing at a fast rate, you would understand why a dividend yield of 10-12% isn't attractive anymore, hence the sell off... hopefully if the government can get the rate back to single digits and stabilise it then we may see inflow of capital with likely capital gains.

I quite subscribe to the surmise above. When you consider the Zenith Bank case, the mid to long term out look for the Nigerian Economy still hovers around the threshold of a recession because of some of the reasons quoted above in addition to others. Now remember there are still investors who recently bought Zenith at N9.00 to N10.00 and for these people, selling at say N12.00 still offers better gains, from 20% to as much as 33%. With a bearish outlook as previously stated above, this class of people are likely to sell off at prices even as low as N11.00. This is the best time for them to offload before the bears resume at the beginning of the next quarter. Only when this set of people are done panic - selling should we expect to see some rise. Who knows it may then even rise to as much as N14.00 - N15.00 after reaching a low of about N11.50.

This is just me playing with theories, it's not in any way a sell or buy recommendation o

Oga, it is his fault... No excuses...

I also bought Starcomms with doing the necessary fundamental analysis...

I am not crying again, I have moved on...

But I am taking the lessons with me... If I see a good stock based on fundamentals, I keep buying even is the price is going down (e.g I am still buying AFRIPRUD even now)

If I see a loss making stock, even if it is a growth industry, even if it is 10k per share I am NOT buying... If the SEC won't protect you from bad corporate governance, the best you can do is protect yourself by doing your homework.
