AdaNewbie1290: The British father and Nigerian mother have to be married to get the baby to be a citizen. However if it's the mother that is British it is automatic. We got a british passport for our son who was born in Nigeria last year and it took about 14 weeks from start to finish. You have to attend an interview in Lagos towards the tail end with the baby. Goodluck |

makB: Hence my reference to present legislation. Just for clarification to assist OP in yet unasked questions. If mother is not British, and not married to a British Father(of the child), seperated from the British father of the child or child out of wedlock. Same situation applies, automatic citizenship from mother or not, depending on circumstances. |

hello I am new to this forum but I just wanted to clarify the issue of acquiring British citizenship. if you are a child of a British citizen or a settled person in the UK, it does not matter which of the parents has the citizenship as the laws changed in July 2006. firstly if a child was born after July 2006 to a parent who is a British citizen or a person settled in the uk, that child automatically is a British citizen and it does not matter which of the two parents , and you do not need to be married for the child to acquire citizenship. secondly if the child was born before July 2006 then the child will need to apply for indefinite leave to remain and after a year of holding it the child can then apply to naturalise. another thing to know is that if the child was born before any of the two parents became settled in the uk and the child was born after July 2006 then the child will only need to naturalise as a British citizen. I have been in the same situation and applied for naturalisation for my child first child and he acquired it from his father and we were not married and the second one automatically acquired it from me after I had my indefinite leave. Please refer to the home office website. I hope this information is helpful. 4 Likes |

sister2007: Thank you so much for the clarification. I was of the opinion that the child's parents had to be married because they made us prove we were married with photos from our wedding, marriage certificate, pictures of us before, and after the baby and proof that my husband was responsible for our upkeep. Maybe when the baby is born outside the UK the rules are different. Thanks for clearing that up @sister2007 |

Hello, please can anyone explain this. 1. my sponsor earn £16,231 per annum without extra shift but with extra shift money all she receive over 7 month now is about £1650 per month. How can we explain this that we meet the financial requirement because on her contract it show that she earn £16,231 and she has additional top up money on extra shift. Just that the extra shift is not shown on the contract but it was mention. But her pay Gross pay shown on her pay slip £18,585.00 so we are down with £15. My husband/wife and I met on/in WHERE AND DATE, and in a relationship since DAY MONTH YEAR and since then we have kept contact thus building a strong and loving relationship that led us to getting married on the DATE OF MARRIAGE at PLACE OF MARRIAGE, CITY, COUNTRY. From the time we started dating till date, I have travelled to COUNTRY on NUMBER (EG:THREE) different occasions in order to further build our relationship and establish the necessary physical contact, as we both decided it will be cost effective and ideal for me to visit him in COUNTRY as oppose to the other way round.(YOU CAN EDIT THIS IF YOU HAVE BEEN UNSUCCESSFULL IN GETTING VISIT/OTHER VISAS) It has been difficult for both of us to have a long distance relationship, our love getting ever stronger so we realised the need to fulfil all necessary requirements to start a life together as a husband and wife should. obabola123: this is correct the fees increased on 18th March https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/510922/Fees_Table_for_website_2016-17_v0.2.pdf visa fee is now £1195 and Priority is now £450, the IHS has not changed remember do not pay for the IHS fee before you start your application as you need to pay this within the application process, it will direct you, or you will find that you will need to pay again, and the fees are all paid in US dollars with the exception of the priority which is in £ 1 Like |
