The revised basic education curriculum (BEC) has been operational since September 2014 and the contentious subject, Religion and National Values has been on the curriculum since then.

In fact the forward of the subject textbook I sighted sometime last year was signed off by Professor Ruqayyah Rufai and Barrister Nyesom Wike who were both Ministers of Education in the last administration.

The link below is to a scholarly article on the review of the BEC and as you can clearly see, Religion and National Values is listed in Table 2(a). Lower Basic Education Curriculum and on Table 2(b). Middle Basic Education Curriculum as one of the subjects (Numbers 5 and 6 respectively) on the revised list of subjects in the curriculum that came into operation in September 2014.

Religion and National Values was introduced to the curriculum with the best of intentions and if we could all just get over our religious bigotry for a second, I am sure we will all see the merits of raising a generation of children who know the basics of other religions apart from theirs.

Sometimes a little research saves us all the undue heating up of the polity.

teaching religions in schools in this aspect is not converting the student to a particular religion but teaching them the similarities and differences in those religions.

Before someone concludes and decides to be an atheist, it is based on certain knowledge s/he has been exposed to about religions.

What we have been using at state level since last term.
The news is even misleading. Not that they will merge Crs and IRS together. Rather they will be under one umbrella, called RNV (Religion and National Value). Other subjects under RNV are Social studies, Civic Education, and Security Education. Even Agricultural Science and Home Economics are now under prevocational. No much difference really in teaching the subjects only their exams will be done together.

lagos state government hv started it. is not dat u most offer de two. civic,IRK,CRS,SE. are now seen as one subject in result only. if score 50 in CRS, 50 in IRK nd 50 NS. de scores Will be added and divided into 3. so u most do 3subject(IRK,civic,SE. or CRS,civic, SE.

I currently teach in a private school, the issue of religion merging had been in operation since 2014 as part of the Universal Basic Education (UBE) curriculum restructure and it has nothing to do with children of one religion being taught the contents of another religion.

You can ask for a copy of the syllabus from the school your child attend, it will be provided and u will be enlighten if you have questions.

I share your view that any attempt by govt at any level to do such is akin to trying to mix oil and water which will not work. There are thousand and one ways we can learn the 'basics' of each other's religion without shoving one down the other's throat. We just need to respect other people's way of life even if we don't share same. If God in His wisdom had wanted us same, He would have done so Himself.
