There was a black american woman that came to lagos a few years back... she posted pics of all her adventures here on nairaland... she even did "mo gbo mo ya" at a wedding with her Nigerian friend. mo gbo mo ya is a yoruba word for going to a stranger's party or a party that you were NOT invited to... It seems most black americans come from west africa. m0rena35: |

m0rena35: I will go as far as to say that you certainly do look as though you may have strong ties to SE Nigeria, and in saying so... Igbo is the most logical guess as to which specific ethnic group from that region you may descend from. |

m0rena35: Uganda is an East African country. The trans-atlantic slave trade took place mostly in the West. Though it is possible to have ancestors from Uganda, it's unlikely. Nice pics btw. You are very beautiful 3 Likes |

That face could come from anywhere from Senegal to Nigeria to Mozambique. I know a lot of people swear they can tell 'tribe' (I prefer to say ethnicity) by looking at faces, but except for some ethnicities that live on the edge of the Sahara and who tend to have a tall, lanky, narrow-faced look and some Nilotic groups in South Sudan and Uganda who have very dark skin, I do not believe facial features are tribe-specific. Someone with your face could be Igbo. She could be Yoruba. She could even be Zulu. 2 Likes |

m0rena35:Hi You are probably mixed with several tribes like most of African Americans so it's very hard to tell. Is that possible for you take to take both autosomal dna test and mitochondrial dna test (mother to mother). I'm telling you because the mitochondrial dna test you want to take is only one ancestor, it's not significant at all, it' like 1 ancestor among 1000 ancestors. Anyway, hope you find what you want. 1 Like |

VomeSchakleton: This is true but does that make me more or less African? Lol I wonder because the average African American has 70-99% west African DNA and the average African American has at least 1 white ancestor, but you can look at my dads people and tell there is not white in his lineage at all, they are very tall slim and dark skinned, my moms side is short, light skinned and have some members that look white or half but I carry more of my fathers DNA I am dark skinned, high cheekbones, strong, sure we are mixed but I will say I'm African until the day I die. Like where is Africa America, theres no such place 3 Likes |

Re: Do I Look Like A Certain Tribe? by curi00: 9:29pm On Apr 26, 2016 |
m0rena35:Yes it's better than nothing but I dont want you to expect a lot from that. Many dna companies exploit the frustration of the African Americans. Dont forget a lof of slaves were brought from the Congo and another country in Central Africa so I'd say West/Central Africa. You sure are African descendant but sure not just 1 tribe. You shoud embrace being a mixed of several tribes, I know it's easy to say. Sometimes I think we should all just embrace about being African rather than being from this tribe or another and I speak as an African born in Europe. You have a very interesting project about moving to Africa, if I were you I'll do some research about the countries I might be interested in and visit them. 1 Like |

m0rena35: Really nice to read this and a pleasure contributing. Indeed, most African-Americans were from Igboland. So bear in mind that the people that sold their children for over 300 years must have certain characteristics that remain with them for ever. Those characteristics manifest themselves today in the way Nigerian leaders treat Nigerians. In other words, the politicians are the ones doing what the traditional rulers of Igboland and Yorubaland used to do. Few people see the resources of the majority as their personal property and live large on it; at the core of our problem is greed! So be prepared that the type of social recklessness you are running away from is very much present in Nigeria. Nigeria is always going to look good for someone that come from the West considering the fact that what the West shows about Africa is totally negative which in turn discourage African-Americans from associating with ugly Africa, so you won`t be disappointed when you visit Nigeria for the first time. It is a little bit like America already, in the sense that it`s a nation of extreme-extreme wealth cheek by jowl with extreme poverty. Please don`t be bothered by the few wrong-headed ones that would say negative stuff here. Just be patient, you will soon find out that your Igbo people are the specialists in that, but not exclusively so. Nigeria is about half of the population of the US ( over 150 million of us ) so you are always going to find some crazy and tribalistic ones around. I think the best way forward is to visit Nigeria first as a tourist and use that opportunity to familiarize yourself with the environment. Trust me, one month would be enough for such a familiarization visit. Whatever you want to do is possible in Nigeria, especially if you plan to be self-employed, but is better to see the challenges yourself before making up your mind about relocation. I understand that there is more to life than regular water and electricity supply, but I can assure you that life is not easy when you can`t take essentials like that for granted If you have any problem along the way please feel free to let us know, even if we are not in Nigeria at that point in time we can introduce you to those that are. I`m sure you will strike up friendship with many reliable people here. At the same time don`t be too trusting. Good luck! 1 Like |

If it is a well-known fact, there should be numerous well-known authentic source, I tried searching but I could not get any... Slaves were taken by white men from all the coasts of west and east Africa and NOT just Igboland... don't peddle false information! ATERI: |

TheTransformer: There are numerous documentations showing this to be accurate. You can find it easily with just a few simple searches, but there's no need for that, because right here on this site there are several threads available for you to look through, with such information already posted within them. |

Quote a credible source that says most (80%) African Americans are of Igbo descent and stop beating about the bush... it used to be a well-known fact by everyone that the earth is flat... did it make it true?... end of discussion ! http://www.ibtimes.com/where-africa-did-slaves-come-286429 KB1: |

i dont think there's any document saying majority of AA's originate from the igbos.I think its common 4 ppl to think so because igbo look different from other ppl of lower west african countries like ghana ,benin, ivory coast and the yorubas of nigeria.Seriously i think u look more yoruba than igbo and you are beautiful |
