Could 1,000 Roman Soldiers Face 10 Modern Soldiers? by ItuExchange(m): 8:59am On May 14, 2016 |
Who would win a fight, 1,000 Roman soldiers, or 10 fully equipped Navy Seals with unlimited ammo? The concept behind this question isn't entirely hypothetical, in that there is somewhat of a historical precedent, and it would suggest the SEALs would win. Consider the battle of Cajamarca, between Spanish conquistadores and the Inca in 1532. Battle of Cajamarca. At this battle, dozens of Spanish - with technologically superior weapons and armor that served them quite well against the weapons the lightly-armed Incan warriors had - were able to defeat thousands of Incans. There was certainly more to Cajamarca than just disparate weaponry and armor, though. Other important factors included: The surprise factor that favored the Spanish. The Inca were not expecting an attack; the Spanish had firearms, which were foreign to and confused and surprised the Inca; the Spanish had cavalry, and horses were entirely strange to the Inca. The Spanish quickly captured the Incan leader, Atahualpa, early in the engagement and so the Inca were left leaderless. Nonetheless, think about the factors the SEALs would have in their favor: An ability to start taking out Roman warriors and a great distance, taking them out of the equation long before those warriors could be any threat to the SEALs. An ability to target Roman commanders and generals early in the engagement, leaving remaining soldiers leaderless and perhaps confused. The supreme shock their weapons would cause - Roman soldiers would likely be confused, surprised, and even scared of the noises coming from the SEALs weapons and seeing their comrades succumbing to seemingly invisible forces (bullets) from a great distance. The Roman's own tactics working against them. While the Roman's infantry formation was quite effective in hand-to-hand melee combat and battles of their day, imagine what an appealing target that would be for SEALs firing weapons from a distance - you're unlikely to miss! Roman soldiers, packed so closely together in formation and slowly marching towards you provide a massive target and even if your bullet misses someone in the front row, it's likely to eventually find a body a row or two deep. Just aim in that grouping's general direction and you're going to hit someone. Mobility. The SEALs could be concealed, hiding behind terrain and moving about the battlefield in a manner the Roman soldiers would not be used to dealing with. Even if the battle's taking place in an open field, large, tight group formations would still be at a disadvantage when trying to maneuver in response to a quick, agile group of SEALs. Further, while attempting to maneuver, more and more Romans would be getting taken out by the SEALs' rounds. I suppose, were a significant-enough number of Romans able to get within striking distance of the SEALs, those numbers alone would be enough to eventually overpower the smaller force. But one would have to assume that suffering so many casualties before being able to inflict any, possibly losing their leaders, and being entirely unprepared for the types of weapons they'd be seeing and falling to, even hundreds of Roman soldiers still standing might be less than inclined to continue attempting to pursue the SEALs. 1,000 Roman soldiers coming from every side will defeat 10 modern soldeiers who have no other support. Remember there are shields, horses and chariots, how fast would the modern guys reload? |

Recommended weapon of choice for the seal team would be a mini gun with unlimited ammo

VocalWalls:That is the fun part, they won't get up to 500m, the seal team would be shooting API rounds which happens to be unlimited 900m away at 58 rounds per second It would be a sport for the seals given their highly rated marksmanship ability

VocalWalls:10 seals with automatic grenade launchers and miniguns would cause the romans so much damage that they would call the battle off. To make it even more sporty the seal team would be seated inside an tracked IFV with a remote controlled weapons station Goodluck piercing that with arrows, spears and slings

VocalWalls: Well if the seals were on a hill top with unlimited ammo like he said the Romans would be decimated, most ancient shields and armour had limited protection against arrows so bullets would slice straight through them. Don't forget that US soldiers use Armour piercing rounds, so the rounds would slice through roman shields and armour like they were nothing and Romans usually attacked in thick formations so one round from a seal would hit more than one Roman, a single armour piercing bullet wound hit the guy in front and 2 to 3 guys standing behind him. Not forgetting that the seals would me carrying Rocket launchers and Commando Mortars. Romans are trained to deal with Mortars. Final conclusion is that 10 Navy Seals armed with 50 Cal Machine guns, LMGs, Rockets launchers, Knee mortars, and mini guns. Would destroy 1000 Romans. |

upko1: Lol yeah I forgot about automatic grenade launchers. 10 guns armed with 50 cals, Mini Guns, AGLs with unlimited Ammo would wipe out the Romans. Even on a flat surface they Roman wouldn't stand a chance. |

In real life there is no limtless ammunition. A soldier can only carry enough ammo permitted by his size & strenth. If the seals is to have limitless ammo then the roman soldier will also have limitless horses and mauls which they can use as canon fodders. |
