The Federal Government says Nigeria is prepared to start the creation of atomic energy.

The Minster of Power, Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola, made this known at the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Forum in Abuja.

Fashola said Nigeria had secured the fundamental accreditation from the International Atomic Energy Agency(IAEA).

“This thing has protocols and standards; we are already in it; we are not venturing into it; we started a nuclear programme 17 years ago.

“We have gone through the training level; we have produced 25 graduates of master’s level under certification by the International Atomic Energy Agency.

“We have found the sites; the sites have been approved, two sites have been approved by International Atomic Energy Agency.

“We have started the design for the financing; that is the stage we are now; once we conclude that, we move to the design for the construction.

“If all things go well, by quarter four of next year – that is the schedule that I met – we should have started construction, so that is what I meet.“

very good initiative by the government but these are the possible challenges......

1. Uranium is the major substance used in nuclear power plants, at the same time used to manufacture weapons of mass distruction, get it in wrong hands and KABOOM!!

2. What are the plans put in place for the disposal of toxic wastes from the nuclear power plants. because if the toxic leaks into the waterways then the community that it serves; both man and animal + aquatic life might BELLY UP!!!

3. Depletion of the earth is emminent therefore there is need for more geologist and biologist than atomic energy experts to determine where the power plants will be located without interfering with the earth's natural constituents.

However, Nuclear energy is a better solution to Nigeria's energy problem but we should be careful of what we wish for because any deviation in maintenance of these power plants will present a worst scenario by the second.
Oga fashola, if you have been takings drugs without reading the leaflet for probable side effects, i think it time you read it.

Fashola our rocket scientist. I know after 2019 you will not have something called a political career again.

Ambode is doing so much and he's not making any noise. Ambode has exposed your mediocrity as Lagos State Governor. You were only living on a fat IGR which was the brainchild of the man you sacked Ambode. He is far a better governor to you.

You failed in power
You failed in works
You also failed in housing

Am very sure we are not ripe for it. In the Niger Delta, people are still complaining about oil spill, gas flaring and no lasting solution to it yet. Meanwhile the country is not stable security wise and the components of the nuclear power such as uranium must not get into wrong hands, which I believe it will. Why not look into renewable energy like solar and wind instead of anticipating what can only lead to waste of public funds...............

Yes, I concur with you. We can start with 3 Nuclear reactors sited in the following States.

1.) Enugu or Anambra

2.) Bayelsa or Rivers

3.) Kogi or Benue

What do you think? grin
