How Long Does A Car Tyre Stay Before They Expire? Expert Opinions Needed by carreport(m): 2:55pm On May 27, 2016
FRSC marshals have made a habit of preying on innocent road users’ especially female drivers and claiming that the tyre(s) of their vehicles are expired. FRSC Marshals claim that tyres expire after 4 years from Date of Manufacture (DOM).
Question: How true is that?
Answer: Completely false (my opinion)

First let’s start with what those numbers on your tyre means:

The chronological age of any tire can be found on the tire sidewall by examining the characters following the symbol "DOT". The last four numbers identify the date of manufacture of the tire to the nearest week. The first two of these four numbers identify the week of manufacture (which range from "01" to "53"). The last two numbers identify the year of manufacture (e.g., a tire with the information "DOT XXXXXXX2714” was manufactured in the 27th week of 2014).

Accordig to Michelin, after five years or more in service, your tyres should be thoroughly inspected at least once a year. If the need arises, follow the recommendations of the vehicle manufacturer regarding replacing the original equipment tyres. As a precaution, if the tyres have not been replaced 10 years from their date of manufacture (see how to read a tyre sidewall), Michelin recommends replacing them with new tyres. Even if they appear to be in usable condition and have not worn down to the tread wear indicator.
The truth is that a tyre never really expires, it all depends on the wear and tear of the tyre that makes it either useable or to be changed.

By FRSC standard a tyre that is completely worn out but with a DOM less than 4 years is safe to use while a tyre that is not worn out at all due to low millage is unsafe (Sounds ridiculous).

We intend to engage FRSC Corps Marshal so as to call his men to order and that they should rather check the wear of a tyre rather concentrate on so called expiring date of a tyre.

However if you don't want FRSC Marshala wahala u can have your vulcanizer quietly turn the tyre inside out, this is because the DOM is written only on one side (the front side) of the tyre. grin grin grin

Please we need opinions of experts on this matter

It would be appreciated if we hear from members of the public especially those knowledgeable on this matter so we can confront FRSC on this matter.

It's all depends, is just like you buying a beverage and the expiring date is boldly written on it, some China made Nigerian imported ones don't have it any way, that is why we need our SON (standard organisation of Nigeria) to always do their job well to avoid importation of such goods into the country.

All tyres have DOM, just that most Vulcanizers don't know how to check for rotation of tyres because its written only on one face of the tyre (usually the front)

Let me try and say something here
What you should watch on your tyres are the depth of thread, there is usually a marker on the Depth this is what you must pay attention to and this is what Micheline referred to when they said replacement as per vehicle equipment.Once your tyres warn beyond that marker you must change them as the marker is the legal limit fo usage, you lose grip after the thread goes down beyond the marker
As shown below these markers are what we should focus on not Manufacturing dates.

Exactly my point rather than checking for DOM they should concentrate their energies on the wear and tear of the tyres.

The frsc is right. In 2009. we trained some of their officers on tyre monitoring courtesy of Dunlop tyres. The tyres do expire after four years irrespective of the usage. I remember how Michelin tyres were always worried about the stock in their warehouse because of the poor sales activities and their clock ticking on their tyres. That said, the number one problem is the tyre temperature and speed ratings. Even if you bought a 2015 made tyre and it is temperature b tyre and t rating, you are courting danger. Ensure you have temperature a on your tyres and an accurate speed rating for your car.

I would suggest for those that will want to use the depth if tread wear to monitor their tyre, they should also check for tiny cracks along the side wall of their tyre. This can be best seen when you tyre is flat.

This us a clear indication that the carbon polymer the tyre is made of is aged. If you are the type that buys tokumbo tyres, first check for the state the carbon polymer is in (tyre material) by pressing the rubber together and closely examining for tiny cracks. This I think is the first thing to check cos I noticed that tyre seller now cut along the tread groove giving the impression of deep tread depth. This is highly dangerous cause the thickness of the tyre has been compromised and the tyre is likely to burst under use when the expansion due to heat and load pressure overwhelms it.

Those are the two things I will suggest one should watch out for.
1. Cracks along the side of the tyre. (Very critical)
2. Depth of tread.

We are not talking about tyre wear. We are talking about the temperature rating of a tyre, no matter how new the tyre is, if it is temperature b rating, it will explode under the high temperature we had from February this year. Michelin UK cannot be a reference point for our type of tyres. In their imports, 90% are temperature b tyre rating. No need checking out the wear when you are not sure that the tyre will survive a year. I don't know about the UK but in Switzerland, we use two types of tyres. Winter from October to April and Summer from May to September. The summer tyres are called performance tyre but in the USA, they use all season tyre which tolerates both temperatures and its speed rating is restricted but it is always temperature b except the speed rating is v and above, then it is rated as traction aa, temperature a. That's the tyre for Nigerian roads. Check the tyre on your car and look for the temperature rating and act.

Bro Im sorry to say ,I think you are ignorant of what you are trying to say,
The only difference between Winter and summer tyres are the grips .
During winter the weather is cold and the compounds harden in these case the winter tyres retains its grip
During summer the tyre compound expands and retains its grip
There was never an issue of tyr bursting its all about stopping and braking distance
In Tropical regions like ours in Nigeria We use all Seasons tyrs as there is no winter here.
In switz when yu get stopped do the police look for the date of manufacture in ur tyres? the check if you are using the right tyres and if this is correct then they check your thread by their markers to see how far worn you are and if its within the legal limit
The issue of 2 tier of tyres in the EU and swiss is more to do with legislature.
Your tyre ratings is peculiar to just your country and no where else
You keep saying speed rating, explain this, what has speed ratings got to do with your main tyres not spare and how is this applicable in Nigeria where we are always in summer

hy Good question, the average tyre reading is 205/55/16/98 v. The v is the speed rating which means the car cannot exceed 240kms. In some cars like the sclass, bmw 7 series, their tyres are rated zr which means no speed limit. There are times when you will be driving at 120km and your tyres will be vibrating and you will be thinking it needs wheel bslancing but it is your car warning you to reduce speed cos the tyre on your car is not supposed to be there. If you have a range rover fitted with all season tyres with the speed rating limited at H, there is a tendency that that tyre has a B temperature and it will explode when faced with a 25degrees heat. The frsc stated in their report that over 77% of accídents were caused by burst tyres this year and we all know the intense heat the rains just chased away of recent. The legislation you talked about is because it will be suicidal to drive your car with winter tyres in summer or use summer tyres in winter. Here, it is a way of life. Nigerians import cars from all over the world and the cars arrive with 80% substandard tyres which are not meant for nigerian roads. These are the tyres on our roads and if you check many tire sellers stock, they sell majorly temperature b tyres which like you noted, is not ideal for a country that has only summer season. The best thing frsc should do right now is to prevent burst tyres accidents and we should all support them. It is better than being on the road asking for fire extinguisher

A car tyre has no Expiry date that is why it is usually not written . what is written is the Manufactured date...
A car may just have a mileage of 20,000 kms for five years or more..Are you saying that tyre is expired? Never
however, a two year old tyre with 100, 000 km or more need replacing ..especially for those commercial or transport buses or vehicles.
FRsc knows we are laid aback and are just bringing up all sorts of issues..
it is only in Nigeria that you read and see these ...
No other country in the world does that ...
if they inspect for worn out tyres, then it makes sense and in any case that is even jobs of VIO . But in Nigeria, Army does police work, police do immigration work., FRSC will do VIO work.....Bunch oF confused men..where the main aim is how to rake illegal Moni from motorists

Thanks for this enlightenment.Am sure the FRSc guys knows nothing about temp trying of tyres and speed rating.
there is no way you can even use a tyre for 10 years or more..some of those tyres with such dates were either abandoned for long or not actually used .....
FRSC are just cook up figured to bak their claim..not true that 77% of accidents were due to burst tyres..more due to bad roads...
I travel most times and I see lots of accidents due to bad driving and bad roads....burst tyres are not common..infact , you have more of mechanical failures leading to accidents than burst tyres..
FRSc has abandoned it's Constitutional duty of making the road safe...like road signs, warning, traffic control, removing obstruction etc
FRSc do not have towing vehicles to tow trucks etc but are always on hapless motorist....unfit, unlatched. unworthy road truckers
trucks these pose more danger on our roads than tyres...bunch of thieves.
