carreport:
Accordig to Michelin, after five years or more in service, your tyres should be thoroughly inspected at least once a year. If the need arises, follow the recommendations of the vehicle manufacturer regarding replacing the original equipment tyres. As a precaution, if the tyres have not been replaced 10 years from their date of manufacture (see how to read a tyre sidewall), Michelin recommends replacing them with new tyres. Even if they appear to be in usable condition and have not worn down to the tread wear indicator.
The truth is that a tyre never really expires, it all depends on the wear and tear of the tyre that makes it either useable or to be changed.

By FRSC standard a tyre that is completely worn out but with a DOM less than 4 years is safe to use while a tyre that is not worn out at all due to low millage is unsafe (Sounds ridiculous).

We intend to engage FRSC Corps Marshal so as to call his men to order and that they should rather check the wear of a tyre rather concentrate on so called expiring date of a tyre.

However if you don't want FRSC Marshala wahala u can have your vulcanizer quietly turn the tyre inside out, this is because the DOM is written only on one side (the front side) of the tyre. grin grin grin

Please we need opinions of experts on this matter

Please don't turn your tyres inside out simply to deceive FRSC. Tyres have a particular direction their tread must face and that may or may not be with the information facing outwards.

The summary is between 6 and 10 years depending on the manufacturer. Me and FRSC dey get down whenever they Yan rubbish. I always ask them which research they did to. Come up with 4 years..

moreover tyre burst are caused by the bad state of our nigerian road full of potholes. secondly how many of Nigerian car owners read their manuals? I bet 20% do. the rest just drive and enjoy. depending on the type of vehicles, they do have standard air pressure that is recommended for instance on honda prelude 2001 model it is stated that when driving short distances tyre pressure should be at 40kpa while for long distance (that is long distance travelling) it should be 35kpa reasons is that as the tyre temperature rise air pressure increases thereby taking it close to 40kpa which balance it. A tyre with 40kpa running that long distance will put extra pressure on the tyre thereby making it burst. despite the fact that tyres have a tolerance value, that value may exceed causing damage. So its always good to understand their elastic limit and breaking point to avoid tyre burst.

hy Good question, the average tyre reading is 205/55/16/98 v. The v is the speed rating which means the car cannot exceed 240kms. In some cars like the sclass, bmw 7 series, their tyres are rated zr which means no speed limit. There are times when you will be driving at 120km and your tyres will be vibrating and you will be thinking it needs wheel bslancing but it is your car warning you to reduce speed cos the tyre on your car is not supposed to be there. If you have a range rover fitted with all season tyres with the speed rating limited at H, there is a tendency that that tyre has a B temperature and it will explode when faced with a 25degrees heat. The frsc stated in their report that over 77% of accídents were caused by burst tyres this year and we all know the intense heat the rains just chased away of recent. The legislation you talked about is because it will be suicidal to drive your car with winter tyres in summer or use summer tyres in winter. Here, it is a way of life. Nigerians import cars from all over the world and the cars arrive with 80% substandard tyres which are not meant for nigerian roads. These are the tyres on our roads and if you check many tire sellers stock, they sell majorly temperature b tyres which like you noted, is not ideal for a country that has only summer season. The best thing frsc should do right now is to prevent burst tyres accidents and we should all support them. It is better than being on the road asking for fire extinguisher

Do tyres have a shelf life?

Since the 1980's tyres have had a date stamp added to the side walls so that you can see how old they are.

During the 80's it was a 3 digit code giving the week number and year of manufacture. So 218 would equal week 21 in 1988, when we got to the 90's to differentiate they added a triangle to the 3 digits, so 218 (followed by a triangle) would represent week 21 in 1998. It became easier to remember from the year 2000 when a four digit code was used, so 2108 would represent week 21 in 2008.

The service life of a tyre is usually measured by the amount of tread remaining; in the UK the legal limit is 1.6mm over ¾ of the tread all around the circumference. But we should also be looking at the date code as oxidisation is also a serious concern, and since tyres are made of rubber they degrade with age.

Most consumers in the UK do not know that the date code exists, a survey in 2006 showed that only 4% of drivers realised that tyres becomes more dangerous as they age. A large body of scientific evidence supports, that most tyres should be replaced six years from the date they were manufactured. This six year expiration date begins from the day the tyre was made, not from the day it was sold and fitted to a vehicle.

Tyres age dangerously because a chemical process commonly referred to as oxidisation occurs, this simply means that a tyres components are exposed to oxygen, the oxygen particles cause the flexible components of the tyre to harden and become brittle. Over time, the tyre will fall apart under normal stress, just like an old rubber band. Because this process occurs naturally, it doesn't matter if a tyre is being used, stored as a spare, or waiting on a shelf in a tyre depot, the breakdown process has started from day one.

How old is too old? This is a subject of much debate within the tyre industry and no tyre expert can tell exactly how long a tyre will last. The results of experience of many tyre manufacturing companies including Bridgestone, warrant their tyres for 5 years from date of manufacture. Based on these understandings many vehicle manufacturers are now advising their customers to replace their tyres after 6 years, regardless of tread depth remaining.

Regardless of their age any tyre should be replaced if it shows significant signs of crazing, or cracking within the tread grooves or on the sidewalls, or if there is any sign of bulging on the tread face or sidewalls. All tyres should be inspected on a regular basis, do not wait for a yearly MOT or something to fail. If in doubt about a tyres suitability please consult your local Hometyre representative we will gladly advise you.

There are a number of organisations that are calling for an expiration date to be stamped on tyres, but until then the onus is down to you the consumer.

This is also one of the reasons that we at Hometyre are against part worn tyres, as most of these are either accident recovered tyres where the internal structural damage is not known, or some are up to 15 years old, have become brittle and dangerous, but without any laws in the UK regarding age, the part worn sellers can fit anything to your vehicle.tyre cracked Photo shows a crack around the edge of a tyre.

Brussels to Paris on a Toyota Supra 3.0 Turbo Targa, 260kms, left the balance 20 on the mileage for the Car. 180km on Lokoja Okene road, on an E class 240, was mindful of the speed then because I had H speed rating fitted which means I cannot exceed 210kms. Even at that speed, a small 1.8 Toyota Corolla overtook me, Abuja Keffi road, 180kms, same mercedes, a vboot 300E came and overtook me. I have been to all the major tyre dealers and they sell the temperature B tyres and the funny thing is that it is common in all these smaller cars. I have also been to the AUTOBAHN but not as a driver, I followed someone on a saturday outing of the BMW CLUB of Zurich and it was a thrilling experience. That is when you know that you are driving an M 5 series. The bottom line is everyone should check the temperature rating on their tyres. The potholes should also be avoided too because there are sharp edges inside that destroys the side wall of the tyre that even a run flat tyre is useless in the hands of our potholes.

Well, below is an excerpt from Michelin Tyres website:

How old is too old? The five year test
After five years or more in service, your tyres should be thoroughly inspected at least once per year.

However, that said. This is my own experience just today. I did MOT on my car last week and the MOT centre recommended that 3 of my tyres are six years old; that I should plan to change one of them particularly, claiming that this one was already showing a crack - (sign of ageing); that the other 2 are still okay till next MOT.

I took the car to Toyota Authorized car service center today for annual service and waiting for them to do their own assessment. To my surprise they said the 2 front tyres are due for replacement but the condemned 1 by the MOT center is still okay till the next service.

Confused. So I asked them to do a second assessment which they happily did but came back with same result. But at this point, I had to use my own judgement to replace the three. (the fourth was relatively new because I bought that one last year). It's all about my own safety and my passengers. But I was puzzled that these two centres were giving conflicting results.

Very correct! After 4 yrs, the tyre deteriorates...

sooperrescue:
The frsc is right. In 2009. we trained some of their officers on tyre monitoring courtesy of Dunlop tyres. The tyres do expire after four years irrespective of the usage. I remember how Michelin tyres were always worried about the stock in their warehouse because of the poor sales activities and their clock ticking on their tyres. That said, the number one problem is the tyre temperature and speed ratings. Even if you bought a 2015 made tyre and it is temperature b tyre and t rating, you are courting danger. Ensure you have temperature a on your tyres and an accurate speed rating for your car.
