Agarawu23, here's another openable shutter for the big boy. It opens upward with a small garage-like motorized lift and can also be manually opened. Installer unknown. Still researching though. #NearMeThings 1 Like

lastpage: Also doing it on a Nairalander's project at the moment. Inspired by Lastpage.. Lol.. But it's still all about preference in respect to the builder kowope you mentioned. You like it as an alternative, he doesn't. It's cheaper and lighter but a little harder to do. Bottom line, it's practicable. Haven't requested permission to show this pic, so it's just a sneak 1 Like

Many atimes, this thread brightens my day with all the dramas and the knowledge acquired is very cogent to me. To all pros...more info needed on uPVC especially the pros and the cons. Can uPVC be used for glass curtain? |

babalose: So I'm not a pro but I've been researching this as I'm at window install level on one build. http://www.stanekwindows.com/vinyl-vs-aluminum-windows.aspx The insulation benefits are not as important to me in the Nigerian context though. If you can justify the difference in price then I recommend the PVC. |
Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by babalose: 3:05pm On Jun 06, 2016 |
@EgunMogaji....thanks for your prompt response. I will check the link. Price is not an issue for me but my core focus is strength and durability not aesthetic. Nothing I distaste as much as recurrent expenses. Insulation works both ways. It can trap the cold air indoors when the house gets cold and you decide to off the AC and it can make the house feel like oven when there is no light. More enlightenment on uPVC pls. |

EgunMogaji: Thank you sir @erico2k2 yes I noticed the small amount of mortar too. That is purely down to the mix. In Nigeria, some people use 1 bag of cement to set 80-100 blocks.. Of course it won't bind properly. 1 Like |

n3xt:now we are in the same shoe. That's my definition of KOWOPE (and not being stingy to spend) Packaging is the logic and not spending foolishly on things that don't worth it. I can package my duplex with 12m , my neighbor spent 17m on the same duplex , ppl will come around and salute the 12m duplex. That's the game in construction. |

I just noticed that uPVC can come with double and triple pane like EBM. What of the window profile....since its molded, can one decide to increase the profile or its only produced to a particular size?

agarawu23: Now, you're getting it The chateau I'm flashing every now and then is just a cheap build but well packaged. Far cheaper than 99.999% of all the builds I've done on NL and outside but "I do my things my way" giving preference to priority areas. Not surprised I'm having issues with some big guys here, even my own bro. It's not been heady but just to let us know that anything is possible. Passion is what set us apart. Whatever you have passion for, you'll definitely do well at it. _______ Pic: Payloader performing the earthwork for soil stabilization the 2nd time at the chateau. All the effizzy and packaging done in the building will make no meaning if I had to wait till last minute to do the needful. So lucky to get this picture. I'm sure if I dig well I'll see the earthwork pics done prior to foundation laying.

Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by n3xt(m): 3:56pm On Jun 06, 2016 |
@ agarawu23, maybe this will help you understand what packaging can achieve when it's driven with passion. I can't remember all figures spent but none is up to 50% of actual market value of the original designs. Enjoy Kitchen Entry Door I saw the white door in the shop of a reputable Door Seller in Lagos and the price tag is 2,000,000NGN and I just smile. Jejely, I drove down to Omu Sawmill, Ijebu Ode and got solid mature woods and a good carpenter with my drawings and told him I'll give him extra 3k if he do exactly what I wanted. Compare the result! Not so perfect but not so bad for a door that cost less than 2% of what the door seller wanna sell me.

Kitchen Security Door Now, I'm not a fan of conventional way of doing things. A burglar proof shouldn't be a prison barrier but something to prevent authorized access into a house. 65% of my window do not have a protector and I'm living my life without fear. So I saw this steel double-door while surfing the Internet and I just fall in love with the design and showed it to my welder that I want exactly the same door. The secret is to get a thicker flat metal plate installed on grid pipes so that the door doesn't puff or bend. We went for 5mm thick plate and square rod was bent into different rings based on my design specification. Compare the result! My design is finished with less than 33k with 2 keys and locks and installation/delivery cost.

Here's a BIG one! Wrought Iron Entry Glass Door This door makes a wow in matte black finish if well crafted. I found the secret that the wrought iron design pieces comes in two (locally-made quality and foreign standard). I'm not really sure but I think Europe has more of this design elements than any other (may be wrong though). I'm presently picking up the pieces to build exactly the same door as shown below in next few weeks. Framework already completed and I've found a supplier for this pieces in Owode, Lagos. Expect a update later on this thread when I'm done. Again, the price when finished will be like 1/4 of the original market value. #PackagingStuff #SmallThingBigPicture 1 Share

Dear Bosun, Would you consider it too late to run a DPC after laying blocks beyond foundation level? The building is already at it's lintel level. What do you advise? |

@ bandwidth, It's never too late to do your DPC. You just have to know how to do it right. Here's something from the Past. Hope it helps you address your Present issue. The large part of me is shaped by the past and present challenges. Experience made us better each day. Badore, Jan 2013
