A slum is a heavily populated urban informal settlement characterized by substandard housing and squalor. While slums differ in size and other characteristics from country to country, most lack reliable sanitation services, supply of clean water, reliable electricity, timely law enforcement and other basic services. Slum residences vary from shanty houses to professionally built dwellings that because of poor-quality construction or provision of services have deteriorated into slums.

Africa is a huge continent with a population of more than 1.1 billion. The continent’s population is set to double by 2050. More than 60 percent of urbanized Africans live in slums. They do not have adequate access to safe water, sanitation and other infrastructure. Their houses are of poor quality and are not secure. Kenya has one of the biggest slums in the world.

1. Kibera (Kenya).


Kibera is the largest slum on the outskirts of Nairobi. In fact it is the largest urban slum in Africa. Some reports suggest that the total population of this slum may be around 2.5 million. That is around 50 percent of Nairobi’s population. The slum is divided into several villages which include Gatwekera, Kianda, Kisumu Ndogo, Lindi, Laini Saba, Siranga, Makina, Mashimoni and Soweto East.

2. Kroo Bay (Sierra Leone).


Kroo Bay is a sprawling slum filled with debris in Freetown, Sierra Leone. It is one of the poorest areas in the center of Freetown, the capital and largest city of Sierra Leone. Over 95% of the houses don’t have a toilet. The river that runs through the Kroo Bay slum carries with it waste from houses up the hills in the city.

3. Mathare (Kenya).


Mathare is not just one slum. It is a collection of slums in Nairobi. More than 500,000 people live in Mathare. Gang violence is very common in these slums. Some people living here are involved in brewing illegal alcoholic beverage chang’aa.

4. West Point, Monrovia (Liberia).



The West Point slum is located on a peninsula which juts out into the Atlantic Ocean between the two rivers Saint Paul and Mesurado. The slum houses around 75,000 people. It is plagued with problems like overpopulation and diseases. Tuberculosis has killed many residents of West Point.

5. Makoko (Nigeria).


This slum neighborhood is located in Lagos, Nigeria. More than 86,000 people live in Makoko. Here you will find many structures; homes, schools, built on stilts above Lagos Lagoon. It is one of the oldest slums in Nigeria and was originally a fishing village settlement.

6. Korogocho (Kenya).



Korogocho means ‘crowded shoulder to shoulder’ in Swahili. Around 200,000 people live in this slum, which covers 1.5 square kilometers. Korogocho was founded a shanty town on the then outskirts of Nairobi..

7. Kawangware (Kenya).


Kawangware is a slum located about 15 kilometers west of the city center of Nairobi. Hundreds of thousands of people reside in this large slum. Safe drinking water is expensive in Kawangware.

8. Kiambiu (Kenya).


Around 50,000 people reside in Kiambiu, a slum in Nairobi. Children residing in this slum have to walk miles to reach their schools. However, the good news is that some water and sanitation projects are being designed to improve the standard of living of the people living here.

9. Agbogbloshie (Ghana).



This slum city is located in South Ghana. It is popularly known as Sodom and Gomorrah. It has been labeled as the largest waste dumping site in the world. Agbogbloshie slum dwellers face serious health risk from the electronic dump site located here. Around 80,000 squatters hang around this site and deal in scrap metals.

10. Clara Town (Liberia).

11. Ilaje (Nigeria).



Residents of Ilaje live on the lagoon. This sprawling slum is one of Nigeria’s notorious dark spots. People here live under sordid conditions. You will find many poorly fed children playing about in this slum.

This large multi-ethnic slum is located in a small valley, on the outskirts of Nairobi. More than 100,000 people live in Kangemi. The slum has no sewerage.

13. Shomolu (Nigeria).


Shomolu also known as Somolu is an unsophisticated neighborhood in the Ikeja Division of Lagos State, Nigeria. This urban slum is infamous for its poor infrastructure.
