If The Sun Vanishes Tomorrow, Could Humankind Survive? by ItuExchange(m): 8:44am On Jun 10, 2016 |
Assuming the sun vanishes tomorrow; what ways can we survive without the sun? If the sun was just turned off, any preparedness would be about fighting for days. The earth would start to cool towards about -240 C that is the stable surface temperature caused by the heat in earths core. This equilibrium would take a long time to reach, but within weeks it would already be colder on average than the coldest temperatures ever measured on earth. Plants would die instantly, and animals further down would follow suit quite fast (with the exception perhaps for some small ecosystems near volcanic outlets or similar). The last human would probably die within a year or two, perhaps in a submarine (the water would cool slower) or in some location rich in geothermal energy, like Iceland or Hawaii. But I guess a submarine full of fuel and canned food would be a pretty good preparedness. Of course you'd quickly run into the problem of not having an air hole to come up through with your submarine because all seas would freeze over with hundreds of meters thick ice sheets (although some nuke subs have the energy and means to produce oxygen from water, but this is probably outside your budget). Perhaps there would be a suitable spot to park the submarine next to some underwater volcano, and make sure to bring enough fissile uranium. A cheaper alternative would be to stake out in some deep mine, where the temperature from the earths mantle becomes considerable. The deepest operational mine today is in south africa, and it has to be cooled in order for the miners not to die from the heat of almost 60 C that to a large extent comes from the mantle. In the described scenario it might become quite crowded, and getting oxygen down there would of course also be an issue. But would living in a dark submarine or mine for a couple of years eating canned food really be worth the effort? Answer is based on some data from Marshak's portrait of a planet, googlings and some rough guesses and back of the envelope calculations. Life will survive, but human life won't survive because we are the least adaptive in nature 1 Like |

ItuExchange: The sun is the core of a larger star that exploded 4.5 billion years ago. The debris of that star is what formed our solar system. The weight of the sun on the fabric of space is what governs the motions of the planets and therefore life itself. The nuclear fusion going on inside the sun will continue for another 9 billion years. So don't worry. The sun ain't going nowhere yet. In 9 billion years, mankind will find a way. Never worry. |

johnydon22:many million years ago, the meterites that brought the seas , plus the mega volcanic eruption that caused the world to freeze up , killed all life forms existent then. Yet we have humans today and other animals. This haappened because lifeforms adapted at microbial level. And lived throughout in the ice, just as we would discover on mars very soon. When the earth began to unfreeze. The microbial lifeforms true to natural laws of natural selection and genetic mutation started to evolve from these differnet microbial lifeforms existent in those areas to suit the environment. The microbes evovled over millions of years into the diverse animals and plant life you see today. Everytime the world faced a catstrophe like the type which wiped off the dinosaurs, life will return to adaptive microbial forms in a dormant state till conditions improve to allow regeneration again. Current human life and animals will all be wiped off in any catstrophe as that has happened more than 100times since the existence of our solar system. Anymorre questions sire ? |

oglalasioux:the sun is not an offspring of a giant star. The death of giant stars produce black holes. Rather a medium star died and formed our solar system. The earth inclusive is a coagulation of parts of the exploded star after ofcourse numerous violent collisions |
Re: If The Sun Vanishes Tomorrow, Could Humankind Survive? by johnydon22(m): 4:30pm On Jun 10, 2016 |
Eddygourdo: So why do you think such life forms survived during such catastrophic event and how do you think they derive their food? And how exactly are you comparing such miniscule catastrophe to the removal of the sun from the equation.? |
Re: If The Sun Vanishes Tomorrow, Could Humankind Survive? by Eddygourdo(m): 4:52pm On Jun 10, 2016 |
johnydon22:when a mega volcano erupts, the blown ash will spread around the world blocking off sunlight for about 6years. Thus the earth will be in darkness for the entire period, thus plants will die and animals too and unfortunately humans too. Beneath yellow stone park in america is a mega volcano which will erupt in 50years from now . If not sooner. Eg the lack of sunlight will cause the earth to freeze up , thus it makes sense that microbes in the frozen seas will be trapped in ice. Thus those microbes must be able to find a way to adapt to survival in the ice sheets. There must be ice even though some parts will bbecome superheated and thus be subject to eruptions due to a superheating of the earths core. The sun we have is dying and will go off one day, but we are closer to being destroyed by a black hole present in the milky way, than the sun dying. Other catastrophes will destroy the earth before the sun dies |

Eddygourdo: Our sun is the core of the exploded star that formed our solar system. Black holes form when stars run out of fuel and collapse on themselves. Do your research well. |

Re: If The Sun Vanishes Tomorrow, Could Humankind Survive? by Eddygourdo(m): 5:36pm On Jun 10, 2016 |
oglalasioux:oga giant stars who collapse in on themselves form black holes. Other stars could have a supernova and produce smaller stars such as our sun. So yes our sun is a product of an exploded star but not the super giants which produce black holes |

we will but not for long... earth still maintains heat from the decay of radioactive isotopes beneath the crust, plant life would die off slowly and the rest that depend on them would too... in short the earth just becomes less thermodynamic until it's a frozen wasteland.. drifting aimlessly without a star to orbit around.. Go and download "universe sandbox" to see what exactly happens if our sun just disappears.. |

Eddygourdo:Actually our solar system was formed from a nebula not a star. |
Re: If The Sun Vanishes Tomorrow, Could Humankind Survive? by Eddygourdo(m): 9:09pm On Jun 10, 2016 |
ValentineMary:. Please edit that fast before others see it. Thanks. Nebula ? That is but aa result of an earlier occurence. Thus it makes more sense to attribute the origin of our solar system to what actually created the nebula don't u think ? |

Re: If The Sun Vanishes Tomorrow, Could Humankind Survive? by Eddygourdo(m): 10:00pm On Jun 10, 2016 |
ValentineMary:something else like what. We know that in space time, collisions and disintegration are the only observable phonemons. Thus what other thing could have caused a nebula. We consider the entire universe a product of the big bang supernova, thus the entire universe is like a nebula If observed from another ultra universe existing at supra level in space time(if such a thing even exists) |
Re: If The Sun Vanishes Tomorrow, Could Humankind Survive? by ValentineMary(m): 11:22pm On Jun 10, 2016 |
Eddygourdo:It could have been a direct product of the big bang. Researchers are not sure yet so don't conclude without proper evidence. And I don't think there is a thing like big bang supernova because a supernova is explosion of a large star while big bang was not an explosion rather spread of space and matter. |

ValentineMary:Common The Big Bang Was And Explosion That Gave Rise To An Expansion And The Universe Is Still Expanding!! Or What Do U Think Will Happen If Matter And Energy Was Compresed To A Singularity?? |
Re: If The Sun Vanishes Tomorrow, Could Humankind Survive? by Eddygourdo(m): 6:02am On Jun 11, 2016 |
ValentineMary:that is what I am saying, what if the entire universe we know was created by a supernova of a great large star, thus implying that our universe itself could be a part of a larger exa-universe. We say space time is a continum , yet we end space time at a fixed universe. What created the spread of space and matter. There must be a causative effect to warrant that change. Thus we can ask, what existed in whole form before the spread. In our current universe we have observed some of these events of matter collapses in its own weight, thus creating a new strata of matter. Why can't be simply maintain our understanding of the continuity of space time and have an understanding that our entire univverse could be a galaxy in an exa-universe. If we do this , we might no longer have to assume that our concept of space time doesn't work in a black hole's core. I am simply thinking out loud. The big bang appears theoretical but plausible. Yet we narrow our understanding of what could have existed before its effect. |
Re: If The Sun Vanishes Tomorrow, Could Humankind Survive? by ValentineMary(m): 7:10am On Jun 11, 2016 |
Elohim1:That is one major misconception. The big bang was not an explosion. It was just spreading of matter and space. Though the singularity it started from was infinitely hot and dense, something caused it to expand but it did not explode. |

oglalasioux:Were you there in 4.5 billion years ago when it was happening. Stop following unrealistic speculations. A lot of people today believe in what Nasa told them. Just because they leant them in schools. It's not as if they can verify them themselves or see them. Yet they deny Almighty just because they can't see him. |
Re: If The Sun Vanishes Tomorrow, Could Humankind Survive? by oglalasioux(m): 2:39pm On Jun 11, 2016 |
Dawdy: Unlike your bible there are evidences for the formation of the universe including that of our solar system. Cosmic background radiation is one evidence that gives us a compelling reason to believe the big bang happened 13.7 billion years ago. Rocks and meteors tell us that the supernova that gave birth to our solar system happened 4.5 billion years ago. Science is not faith. Science is evidence. I wasn't there but nature left marks that makes me believe the origin of the universe can never be your biblical story. Thanks for your contribution. |
