vicol: That'll be great! I've not done anything like this before. It's either I have it on or not have it at all but explore other means of securing the property but this quest seem to put me on a rethink. I'll do mine and post the videos here. Just that it may take some days to actualize cos I'll want to setup a live test center and show all the installation and schematics. Hoping it'll come out good. 1 Like 1 Share |

Very useful bit of information, the kind that the thread was created for, instead of the gloating about the castle we keep reading. Lets assume one does not want to collect the rain water for later use, is it safe to say that the rain water gutter should drain into a drainage chamber ? Is it the rain water that sometimes contributes to some of the dips we see on interlocked surfaces or is that strictly to do with the ramming of the surface/preparation before sharp sand and interlock goes on it ? @Jessam, Keep it up with the local produce, and may God continue to ensure that you succeed. Big scam that a country as blessed as Nigeria imports frozen livestock/poultry. Mav Jessam: 3 Likes |

Jessam: I see your point and this is same reason that most advocates for the roof water collector give. However, will this reason hold for buildings with foundations continuously in water? Because from basic building knowledge that I have, raft is used in water logged areas because the foundation is expected to be in water for most part of the year and if blocks were to be used, they will be weakened. As an example, I have a place in a water logged area on the mainland. Even though I have sand-filled, when you dig up to 70cm, you will hit water and when it rains heavily, you need to only dig 30 cm and you will hit water. in this kind of case, of what use is a roof gutter? the main source of the water is not even water from your roof but the natural water level for the area. The street gutter is usually always with water. Mind you, on this house, I have roof water collector that is channeled to the street gutter but I had to sit down to ask myself that aside from aesthetics, what is this roof gutter really doing? Water will hit the building one way or the other. The roof water collector takes the rain water and channels it to the gutter alright. But the gutter is usually at the natural water level of the area so what's the point? In my opinion, I believe the reasons you gave will fly for dry areas like where OGA Mufutau55 and EgunMogaji are building. By this I mean areas that are usually dry and are likely to only get temporary wet during lengthy rainfall. But for areas like mine that is continuously in water, I feel it does not fly because channeling the roof water or not doesn't reduce the height of water around your foundation. Unless you are channeling it for further use via a receptive tank. I might be wrong so I am open to correction 1 Like |

danowena It would be good to get the views of our engineers on the application of water gutters, where it is useful and where it may not make a difference. @danowena, Can i also ask, when you say if you dig 30cm you may see water, is this like ground water like a well or just water that has nowhere to flow to ? I am just trying to understand, you know i am not a building engineer. Lastly, what kind of foundation did you implement ? danowena: |

mavverick: That is the level the wells in the area are. you need only a very short rope to fetch water from the well all year round. The longest rope we used in the area was about 1.5 metres during the end of the harmattan. I used raft foundation. Although some people that built bungalows used blocks that were filled with concrete. Some of them are regretting that move already. |

Wow, The most i have seen myself is about 4 metres before you hit water, and even in some parts of Surulere, I have seen over 6 metres. Sorry if I may ask, you dont have to answer this. What is the name of the area/locality. You can also PM me if you dont want to reveal this. They say, you learn something new everyday. danowena: |

How can we work together here on Nairaland to make sure fraudsters dont thrive on this wonderful forum? FYI They have been banned from Mega Chicken in ikota where they usually conduct their fraudulent meetings so they now come on Nairaland, parading themselves as pro but in the real sense they are quacks. Please be careful and avoid that over zealous builder whose office use to be inside IkOTA shopping complex. Don't get carried away with internet pictures and youtube videos. Dont let them use Mega chicken to Maga you. Dont let them use Mega chicken to collect your Mega millions. Be warned! 5 Likes

danowena: You are very right. The water still touches the ground. The interesting part of everything in life is that there's a right and wrong way to do things. There's a way to use roof gutter to your advantage in a house and there's a way to use it to your disadvantage. One of the hazard includes wetness and soil erosion which may cause a bigger problem for the foundation. This is caused by uncontrolled water runoff from the roof gutter. Ensure there's a concrete platform at least to receive the direct hit of the water flow from the roof before redirecting into the flood drains with the compound. Otherwise, it'll only be a matter of time before the receiving ground get soggy and wet. Some will introduce a catch basin (sump or chamber) to collect the waters before redirecting into the perimeter drain. One can also direct to underground water reservoir for specific purposes. But it's a good solution for building in waterlogged and dry land. Your point about having high water table is well noted but really all you want to do is to reduce the volume of water in your compound and redirect to a lower level. 2 Likes

More importantly is the use of a very good landscape and hardscape to control erosion. I always play around with varying levels while keeping the drain pipe at a steady slope with multiple large sized floor drains. The funniest thing about water is it is so easy to tame. It gets weak and tired when you channel its course.
