Troops that have been under fire over a long period of time acquire certain skills and physiological characteristics caused by the efficient allocation of adrenaline. This makes them far more deadly than untested forces. Ten battle hardened Malians will more than match 10 rookie US Marines. In fact the chemical balance in war tested troops is such that before they go back home they needs to be psychologically " stepped down" otherwise they might kill members of even their own families.

So the issue isn't about just skill but battle readiness caused by hormone/chemical balances.
