Thanks oooo, many of the comments above are totally out of sync with the reality on ground. Many other professions offer way better pay, the guy shouldn't waste energy and resources going into the medical field

I'm in a state Of limbo presently,by that,I mean I'm in a Confused Swamp of dilemma.
I just Finished with SLT in a Federal polytechnic,I'm very confused about the course to study.I have 2 courses in mind which are ;Medicine and pharmacy.

I like both courses but I wanna be rich,,,I mean I wan make this moneyyy...
I have passion for both courses but I have to know which one is more lucrative.
Forget the passion talk shii,,I'll definitely survive if I go through any of the two despite the level of rigor.I'm 100% sure of that.

Just illuminate d dark in respect to which of the two earn biggerAbeg!!!!

Am a medical student presently, my brother d real answer to your questions and not to be decieved is.. As a medical doctor u can be comfortable , bt u are nt assured of been rich , medicine is nt studied for money bt passion to care for people , as u can even treat patient with no cash, if u wanna be a gud doctor, d relief of ur patient is d first priority and dere relief and happiness will bring joy to you dats d satisfactin. Bt if u are after money sir, u may nt make it far as d stress in the job is greater than d pay.

there are rich doctor, as well as not so rich doctors, we also have rich pharmacist and the not so rich ones.
I am one of the 4 categories stated up here so I know what I'm saying.
if money is ur goal. during ur training (either as a pharmacist or as a medical doctor) you will get frustrated.

my advice- find your passion and follow it up
I guess your passion is to be rich then plan for it like Dangote and co. I'm sure u know that there is no medical doctor or pharmacist in the first ten richest men on earth

Mr asssmasher,it depends on the angle you're looking at it from.
If it's within the hospital settings,a doctor's pay will definitely outweigh that of a pharmacist but the same can't be said outside d hospital for a pharmacist coz the pay far outweighs that of a doctor depending on the perspective again.Mind you,before you can enjoy the middlingly big pay as a doctor,you'll have to go for residency and that's nothing less than 6years after which you'll then start off as a junior registrar and that's nothing below 240k.
Consultants are being paid 700k to A million plus depending in the field.Million plus can only be paid for the dreaded fields like neurosurgery unlike internal medicine,orthopaedics and d likes and mind you,it'll take you more than 2decades before you can attain ds rank.
Obviously,you can only become a registra(250k) after like 12-15yrs I.e 6yrs(degree)+1yr(horsemanship)+1yr(service)+nothing less than 5yrs residency if you're lucky,some use more than 8yrs in d program. It isn't easy..
The entry level for pharmacists straightaway post nysc is 160k-170k thereabout while it's like 180-200+ for Medical officers.For doctors who do not go for residency,the pay isn't much attractive coz dey get paud just like other civil servants with little difference.More than 70% of d doctors you see arent specialist,only a little percentage is.That's the bitter truth.
That's d reason a greater percentage of them are left frustrated owing to d fact they only studied it for d sake of job security and prestige.If you have passion for it,you'll make it...

Outside the hospital settings,Pharmacists are regarded as big Men that's depending on the field,in industries,They can serve as Med rep for multinational companies,most pay from the range of 200-300k or even higher for entry level e.g gsk,sanofi aventis,reckitt,benkiser,drugfield,novartis and d likes.With time depending on how well you meet your targets,you can rise through ranks to a senior rep,production manager and a regional manager.
Senior reps earn like 300-500+ depending on d company.
Ass.Production manager earns more than 500+-600
Production manager earns more than 600+
Regional manager earns more than 1M to even 2M depending on d company.
Those figures are for multinationals not for locals Pharm companies.

In community settings,they can make sales of 300+ depending on the location.
I've once worked as a locum for a community Pharm and they make sales of 400-700+ weekly depending on how fast d sales Boom.That's like 3times d salary of a registrar in less than a week.Sometimes,it might not b this high but it can never be below 200+ weekly.Sometimes more than 1M in less than 3days because it's business.
Obviously, that's d rationale why pharmacist aren't willing to work.in hospital coz there are opportunities for 'em to explore.

And as a pharmacist, you can easily set off a business of your own.

Do you know that some (in fact many) doctors in government hospitals make close to 500k a month from private practices alone? Some as high as a million or more. So don't tell us that only pharmacists do marketing, doctors that own their own private hospitals count millions on weekly basis. It depends on your drive for money though. I think we have many doctors in politics too. Very many.

This is really a dicey one. Firstly, they both make decent pay. However, in federal hospital doctors are paid higher than pharmacists. Entry level ranges between 155k-170k. Whereas MO's entry start fron 210k+. But in privat3 and state hospitals doctors earn less. However, doctors are somewhat limited to the hospital setting. Very few venture outside this. As a pharmacist life isnt very rigid. You can decide to be a medical rep, open your pharmacy, work in a pharmaceutical industry while rent out your certificate to a pharmacy to be paid btw(500k-800k)per year while not working there. The pay for most of these jobs do not start at nothing less than 160k entry level except for repping where some multinationals can pay you up to 250 entry level. Community pharmacists make far more than dat tho. It just depends. If you prefer a much more variable experience with good pay go for pharmacy but if u do not mind a constant life in the ward throughout your existence go for medicine.

In Naija wer the regulatory arm of professional bodies ain't thorough enough, u see a doc performing the pharmacist's duties esp in hospitals. While most pharmist only get to be drug marketers and not manufacturers. Fact is that, there is an ever increasing need for med docs services than that of a pharmacist.

'Tryna survive hospitals' would rather employ one doc n pay him well for both services than employ both n pay much more.

As a pharmacist, u can earn ya money in the govt hosp, less than a doc tho, and stil cash out by leasin ya licence to peeps who are nt pharmacist that open drug stores( easy cash)..buh den as a doc, if u are smart and wise, u can make a lot in a month with private hospitals esp in lag, 4gt story all u need is a storey buildin with basic hosp instruments and u good to go frm there u develop and expand, I av a frnd who's a nurse, dude makes notin less dan 1m a month, omo if d market con sell wella,surgeries lik caesarian section enta wella he makes notin less dan 1.5m and he doesn't even hav a big hospital, now not to talk of som1 who's a certified doc. I knw of a certain hosp in gbagada dt doesn't mak less dan 30m frm HMO's alone not to talk of public patient/client..

To me if u hungry and hardworking as doc, u'll mak a lot of money and dt means you have to go outta the govt hosp setting to mak dis kinda big cash.

you can make money irrespective of the course you read, the power to make money lies in u rather than what u read, that is the fundamental mistake youths make. you can get to the peak of any career u chose in life, and money will come naturally as u pursue ur career diligently.

I'm also aware of that fact you do write some exams before getting promoted,My question is, How many of 'em do get promoted?How many consultants do we have?A lot find it difficult to reach the peak of their career,More reason why we have a lot of Medical officers in hospital these days.A lot even find it hard to become a specialist talkless of being a consultant.The thing about Medicine is you have to posses an enormously great passion for d course if you wanna enjoy it else you'll be frustrated and disappointed.

Unlike a doc who's only limited to d hospital,a pharmacist can venture into pharmaceutical industries or retail pharmacy,he's free to pick from being a clinical,industrial,community or academic pharmacist.the same can't be said for a doctor apparently.(Acads and clinics)
As far as I'm concerned about politics,anyone can venture into that provided he has the chutzpah and passion for it.How many Docs do we have in d house of assemblies?Majority are just Mallams,chiefs, honorables and Alhajis.Lol!!!!!

my guy,anybody can own a pharmaceutical outfit...it all depends on mindset....when it com's to comparing sha,pharmacy can't stand medicine...but,my nigga, it is not medicine or pharmacy that will make u rich, it is ur head that will do it for u,unless u just want to be living close to poverty line

in this era of pharmaceutical care, pharmacist are well appreciated by health insurers because when drug therapy is optimised, the cost of care is reduced. Even those areas once considered as core medical practice are being given to the pharmacists. The scope and areas of pharmacy practice has expanded greatly over the years.

my brother, I swear na dis stupid mentality weh our parents carry take put dis nation for this kain mess. Alot of destinies intertwined because they want us to study the so called course that's got prestige and good pay. Imagine if fela didn't rebel against what his parent wanted him to study. No course, I repeat, no course is a waste so long you are hardworking, passionate and focused.
The result of this wrong thinking is the high rate of unemployment we have in the country. everybody wan give him time to get payed and not skill. Now we are being coarsed into enterpreneurship cos gov't cannot provide job for our "unemployable graduates". The thing is, we should go for our "heart desire" cause at the end of it all, nobody will live our lives for us. Collective wisdom is mostly wrong. Happiness is key!

Consider the time, money and effort to get either degree.

Either way, their salaries suck.

But if you can turn either one into a profitable business, you will be ok.

The salaries depend on if you get paid at all. Apparently, salaries in arrears is an acceptable practice in Nigeria.

well,visit most teaching and specialist hospitals and you will be marvelled at the roles being played by clinical pharmacists. many pharmacies are now service providers under the NHIS.

oga if it is money that you are looking for, forget medicine there is no money in that field as much as people think. A young guy in other fields has a potential of getting richer than an average doctor on a long run.
So very well, if it is money Medicine can't do it. especially if u compare the amount of work u have to put into it before the 'big' money u will get comes, mehn u are better off selling cement, real estate and other budding fields but pharmacy won't be a bad idea too.
