IZANAMI:
Mr asssmasher,it depends on the angle you're looking at it from.
If it's within the hospital settings,a doctor's pay will definitely outweigh that of a pharmacist but the same can't be said outside d hospital for a pharmacist coz the pay far outweighs that of a doctor depending on the perspective again.Mind you, before you can enjoy the middlingly big pay as a doctor, you'll have to go for residency and that's nothing less than 6years after which you'll then start off as a junior registrar and that's nothing below 240k.
Consultants are being paid 700k to A million plus depending in the field.Million plus can only be paid for the dreaded fields like neurosurgery unlike internal medicine, orthopaedics and d likes and mind you,it'll take you more than 2decades before you can attain ds rank.
Obviously,you can only become a registra(250k) after like 12-15yrs I.e 6yrs(degree)+1yr(horsemanship)+1yr(service)+nothing less than 5yrs residency if you're lucky,some use more than 8yrs in d program. It isn't easy..
The entry level for pharmacists straightaway post nysc is 160k-170k thereabout while it's like 180-200+ for Medical officers. For doctors who do not go for residency, the pay isn't much attractive coz dey get paud just like other civil servants with little difference.More than 70% of d doctors you see arent specialist, only a little percentage is.That's the bitter truth.
That's d reason a greater percentage of them are left frustrated owing to d fact they only studied it for d sake of job security and prestige. If you have passion for it,you'll make it...

Outside the hospital settings,Pharmacists are regarded as big Men that's depending on the field,in industries,They can serve as Med rep for multinational companies, most pay from the range of 200-300k or even higher for entry level e.g gsk, sanofi aventis, reckitt, benkiser, drugfield, novartis and d likes. With time depending on how well you meet your targets, you can rise through ranks to a senior rep, production manager and a regional manager.
Senior reps earn like 300-500+ depending on d company.
Ass.Production manager earns more than 500+-600
Production manager earns more than 600+
Regional manager earns more than 1M to even 2M depending on d company.
Those figures are for multinationals not for locals Pharm companies.

In community settings, they can make sales of 300+ depending on the location.
I've once worked as a locum for a community Pharm and they make sales of 400-700+ weekly depending on how fast d sales Boom. That's like 3times d salary of a registrar in less than a week.Sometimes,it might not b this high but it can never be below 200+ weekly.Sometimes more than 1M in less than 3days because it's business.
Obviously, that's d rationale why pharmacist aren't willing to work.in hospital coz there are opportunities for 'em to explore.

And as a pharmacist, you can easily set off a business of your own.

well done..uv hit the nail on the head....im a practicing Pharmacist....and all uv said are true.

oga if it is money that you are looking for, forget medicine there is no money in that field as much as people think. A young guy in other fields has a potential of getting richer than an average doctor on a long run.
So very well, if it is money Medicine can't do it. especially if u compare the amount of work u have to put into it before the 'big' money u will get comes, mehn u are better off selling cement, real estate and other budding fields but pharmacy won't be a bad idea too.

The bolden statements are grossly incorrect and completely misleading. Beware never make comments about something of which you are not well enlightened on. For example medical programme is 6yrs to become a doctor, 1yr housejob, 1yr youth service, 4-6 years training as a resident makes you a consultant. A consultant is a doctor at the Peak in his chosen discipline just like a PhD holder, but unlike the PhD I think you can only be a consultant in 1 field of medicine only.
Residency implies training to become a consultant similar to post graduate programmes, but unlike the postgraduate training a resident is paid by the government throughout the period of training which is NORMALLY 4-6 years. A junior resident is a doctor who IMMEDIATELY after nysc is contracted to train with a certain hospital, commonly a federal hospital, as a pg student. U can liken him to a masters student if you want, but mind you he is paid. There is senior residency level of course which I'll like you to liken to a PhD student for clarity sake. There are several exams in this process, but I'll not bore you with them.
Now to the point of frustration. I'll just ask you Mr zealous, is there a worker that is never promoted, especially when he has a certificate as precious as the mbbs? Once you are employed with a certificate you get promoted until you reach the highest level available to your certificate and mbbs can take you very far in the civil service for instance, tho you can never become a consultant unless you train. You talking about pharmacists earning big outside hospitals, what about doctors don't they earn big outside the hospital too? As a doctor you are a first class citizen and that ticket alone can take you very far in politics, or business..

Okay, let the crossfire works begin. Docs vs Pharms

Go for medicine, since you have passion and mental capabilities for both. In Nigeria, the Doctors head the health sector if not na wahala. Any time the Minister of Health is not a Medical Doctor, the Medical Doctors will always go on strike.

As a Medical Doctor, you will be able to set up your own business and also "encroach" on others in health sector. In your hospital, you can have pharmacy, laboratory etc, however, as a Pharmacist you can't open a clinic in your pharmacy.

So I am of the view that if you want to practice in Nigeria, then medicine is it.

How someone can make money from pharmacy? That's one of d most irritating question I've ever seen.I wouldnt go tru d rigor of typing notes, tell ur sis to go make enquiry from pharmacists. She can go work as a locum pharmacist in a community pharmacy pending the time she gets placement for her internship. The pay depends on d location.
Pharmacy interns earn more in National e.g orthopaedic hospitals in abuja and neuropsychiatric hospitals(130-150K) compared to teaching hospitals(mostly around 120-130k)Companies do not pay much for interns.A little above 90k for multinationals coz they do not value them...
FMC in Abeokuta pays above 148k,it was higher than this before ipps started.
If she's after d pay,let her go to hospitals, probably national, neuropshychiatric, teaching hospitals or medical centres. No hospital pays below 100k for a pharmacy intern.
Besides, it should be easy for her to get placement as a pharmacy, the docs are d ones who find it difficult to get placement bcoz they're much.

If you want money, go and do any of these: ritual, cocaine, steal/robbery, oil bunkering or politics. You will be highly disappointed if u enter any of those professions because of money. You can't have equal passion for both courses. Obviously your perception is lopsided. Tho I wanted to indulge you to wallow in the ignorance, my conscience is pricking me that you are going malignant with this ill enlightenment. You think doctors are limited to the hospitals yet you never said pharmacists are limited to drugs! All the diverse areas you claimed yo mentioned for the pharmacy stuff have something to do with drugs- meaning pharmacists are limited to drugs. You mentioned community pharmacists who are most likely drug sale representatives, and who most likely claim to know as much as the doctor in those communities until complications arise of course, but you seemed never to have heard of community medicine and preventive health experts who have special budgets from the government and international organisations. You have told us how much sale rep pharmacist of different cadres earn, but you never mentioned how much a cmd earns. You never seemed to be aware that a non lawyer can never become a chief justice or minister of justice. You also have not given it a thought that a sizeable number of Nigerian pastors with large followership are doctors. Can you Beat that What about NASS? Do you know how many doctors are in there? Have you checked? You argue blindly Bro when you dispute the first class citizen stuff. The truth is Nigeria is a jungle, and becoming successful does not depend on your course of study, but different courses give different fighting chances. #teammedicine#
