Lol how can you be asking for investigative reportage when Punch and other newspapers are currently struggling to out do Nairaland, Linda Ikeji and other blogs with cheap, unprofessional and unreliable stories.

They do it so well now using; Anonymous source, A source that doesn't want to be mentioned, Unconfirmed Reports reaching our desk etc.

I miss the likes of Tell, TheNews, Newswatch etc those were the EFCC of the military era but today Politicians and Corporate bodies have pocketed our writers, sorry I can't bear to call them PRESS they don't deserve it. News breaks now adays through social media before the press gets a hold of it and when they do you are disappointed at what you get because it is what you know already.

We need our Press Back all Media houses should wake up, it is the major reason your papers are not selling anymore they lack depth and no news behind the news.

Please investigate the DISCO's in Nigeria, Shopping Malls deals, Land grabbing, Aviation & Maritime Sector, Oh my LGA's crap, Politheivians and their household, several construction jobs on going, who is who etc.

OP, investigative journalism is long dead in Nigeria. Brown-envelope journalism and yeye blogging has taken its place and a big part of the blame lies on the consumers of the trash being churned out.

By the way, if you're going yo change 'existing' to 'exist', you must change 'do' to 'does' too.

Premium Times and Saharareporters doing it from outside.

Nigerian journalists are only busy publishing gossips and rumours picked from the social media.

Lol. Investigative journalism. Two words that are as alien to Nigerians as electricity. Investigative journalism is not possible in a corrupt country.

Smile

But it is one of the tools needed to eradicate corruption, 'the pen is mightier than the sword' so they says.

Hmmm you guys haven't heard of Ahmed Isah of Brekete Family Radio and TV programme, he does investigative journalism to right the wrongs of the society, he takes on both government and private sector organizations and individuals who have wronged others and a complaint is brought to him. He is more of a social crusader/investigative journalist.

OP do u even know wht is investigative journalism ? Of course we do practice it in Nigeria especially the print media. I know you don't read newspaper so u will not know. I saw a thread in nairaland today http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/07/nigerian-
prison-inmates-pay-n30000-n100000-watch-movies-
use-iphones-ipads/ this is a classical example of investigative journalism at OP and others.

Sorry bro but THAT isn't investigative journalism...that is just an INTERVIEW nothing more.
You could also call it an unfinished article (if u qualify it as investigative journalism) where is the end product? where is the links? Diagrammatic representation of the informal structure within prisons? WHERE IS THE PROOF?

Was any prison guard named? Was the warden implicated? Except for an EX-inmate who else went on record to corroborate his statment? Investigative journalism seeks to EXPOSE not throw up vague assumptions.

2dugged:
was there investigative journalism before?
News Watch under Dele Giwa and Co started out as Investigative journalist even Dele Giwa was murdered by IBB the journal continued with it.
Tell Magazine was the next major Investigative Journal of the 90s and early 2000s with likes of Osa Director and Co. It fragmented as some staff broke off to start their own investigative journal which competed with Tall but both have fizzled out. The present generation of reporters are mostly "brown envelope" journalists with very shallow contents laced poor expression of grammar and tenses. Lots of respectable jounalists of the 60s -90s were reputed for their investigative reporting, deep content and quality construction and ecpressoon of English language.
I pity this generation, short-cut mentality and lack of attention to details will rub them of quality in all aspects of life including journalism.

punch newspapers and channels TV do investigative journalism to some extent.
then there is Sahara reporters and premium times and theirs is solely politics.
Re: Do Investigative Journalism Still Existing In Nigeria? by DeRay98(m): 8:42am On Jul 10, 2016
The "Pen is mightier than the sword/gun" is the slogan we used to hear back in the days. But apart from broadcasts media nowadays, the print media have "Sold their Pen" for Naira and political appointments to the people who they are supposed to put on under their feet. Very few "iron-hearted" thorough bred print journalists remain in the print media.

very true.

I have heard of the guy's TV and radio programmes.

it does not necessarily have to be all about politics before we talk about investigative journalism.

It's owned by a Nigerian, it's reported news are mainly Nigerian concern. So what??
Re: Do Investigative Journalism Still Existing In Nigeria? by Orikinla(m): 9:22am On Jul 10, 2016
Yes.
But very dangerous in Nigeria.
Sahara Reports can do it, because the publisher is based overseas.

The book "Ghosts of the Niger Delta" was written by two investigative journalists who fled Nigeria to publish it in the United States of America, because they were lwarned not to publish it here.

Premium Times engages in thorough investigative journalism. I can remember they exposed Dangote CEMENT undoing at Benue and as result the country was forced to pay compensation. They were also part of the press companies that exposed the Panama papers saga.

Sahara Reporters are so good in causing many nightmares for many politicians. Can break exclusive news, but I think they could be superficial sometimes.

Sunnycliff:

Sahara reporters are not based in Nigeria rather in the UK

Sahara Reporters is purely Nigerian owned by a Nigerian, it focuses on issues bothering democracy in Nigeria and it uses Nigerians based in Nigeria to glean its information
