Al-Shabab Attacks Somali National army Military Base

Al-Shabab fighters temporarily overran a Somali government military base in Laanta Buur, a former prison about 40 kilometers west of Mogadishu, officials said.

The militants attacked the base at around 1:30 a.m. Monday local time, killing soldiers and seizing weapons and military trucks, security officials said.

The attack began with a suicide car bomb at the main entrance of the base, followed by massive attack by hundreds of heavily armed militants.

Some soldiers at the base reportedly attempted to defend themselves but were overpowered.

A security official says at least three soldiers were killed but other officials say they fear a heavier loss of life.

An official who was briefed on the attack said a military command control center for three regions, Lower Shabelle, Middle Shabelle and Benadir, was recently set up in the base. It's unclear if any high ranking military officers were killed or wounded in the attack.

The official said militants controlled the base until 4:00 a.m. local time when they pulled out and headed towards the town of Awdhegle.

The Al-Shabab militants claimed to have killed more than 30 government soldiers in the attack and seized seven vehicles. Their claim cannot be independently verified.

Al-Shabab attacked the same base in March this year seizing military trucks and rocket propelled grenades.

Six soldiers were killed in the March attack. Senior government officials at the time suggested that "rogue officers" may have collaborated with the militants.

@chinese8107 those clashes are in south sudan ,totally different conflict.this is two disputing tribe which are fighting for power,no alqaeda or alshabaab involvement in that conflict .from what i am hearing thing are getting worse.it looks like china involvement in africa is becoming costly

Two Chinese UN peacekeepers killed in South Sudan capital fighting

NAIROBI, July 11 (Xinhua) -- Two Chinese UN peacekeepers were killed in renewed fighting between South Sudan's rival army factions in capital Juba, a UN official confirmed to Xinhua on Monday.

The official at the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), who asked not to be identified, said the armoured vehicle that a group of Chinese peacekeepers were travelling in on duty was hit by a mortar shell on Sunday, leading to the deaths and injuries.

"I can confirm that two Chinese were killed on Sunday evening and eight others injured. Four of the injured are in a critical condition," the UN official said.

Fighting between government troops of President Salva Kiir and forces loyal to Vice President Riek Machar resumed on Monday.

"The situation in Juba is still tense as heavy artillery and explosions could be heard," the UN official said.

An APC hit by a mortar shell I guess that's a Precetion guided mortar shell, only one shell destory the APC.It's doesn't look like convetional shell that needs many shots to hit precisely.This is not a shot accidentlly but delibrately. The shell may came from a third party.

Considerable fighting has centered around the U.N. base in the Jebel area, where some 30,000 civilians have taken refuge. The opposition also has a base near Jebel and their leader also has his home there.

Two government helicopters have been bombing areas near the base while ground forces shell the base, including a camp of tens of thousands of displaced civilians, according to a source within the U.N. compound, who insisted on anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to the press. The displaced civilians are mostly of the Nuer ethnicity and sought protection from the U.N. after a series of government-led killings of Nuer in Juba in 2013 which sparked the civil war, according to an African Union commission of inquiry.

Video broadcast on Chinese state TV showed smoke rising after the attack and Chinese peacekeepers tending to their wounded.

There were 67 injuries and 8 deaths in the U.N. base Sunday, according to an internal situation report circulated among humanitarian organizations and seen by AP. Water tanks have not been able to bring water to the tens of thousands sheltering inside the base.

stop turning the west into our scapegoat when ever we f@ck up,south sudan is run by imb@ciles.the first thing after did after getting independence was to start eat and then when war started between them and sudan they were collecting funds on the streets from ordinary citizens to fund their army and this was when oil price was more than 100 dollars per barrel .there are billions of dollars which have being looted by south sudanese government officials.when i first heard they had start a civil war ,i wasn't even shocked
