It would be sad to throw away the baby with the bathwater.
I suggest all comments not relating to suggestions or informations on property or building should be deleted.
It would be a shame to wipe out the useful informations here also.

This is the most entertaining and informative thread i have seen in the property section even though it's been a while I really saw anything worth learning from, except exchange of insults which always attracts more audience.

EgunMogaji:
Some years back while living in North Texas, a raccoon decided to enter my attic to setup shop (garage was mistakenly left open overnight).

So for a couple of days there it will make all sorts of racket up there.

If you walk by a certain section of the garage, she'll growl and hiss. It was actually quite entertaining.

Then I went and purchased a Raccoon cage.

I set the trap up there (folks you do not want to come face to face with a Raccoon while on a ladder grin

Few hours the Raccoon was caught.

I had to wait till the morning to drive out into the monies to release it.

I happened to be restoring a car at the same time in the garage where I kept the 'coon.

Everytime I walked by to grab a tool the Raccoon will rear up, hiss, paw at the cage to get a piece of me grin

(Neighbor said shoot the dam thing already, but nope I'm Mr. Environmentalist).

Hours later when I finished my work on the car I was restoring, the 'coon had tired itself out. It wouldn't even move from a sleeping position any more when I walked by grin

In fact when I went to release it back into nature later in the morning I had to purposefully nudge it out of the cage. It was all spent and worn out. It was hard to imagine that this was the same boisterous animal I had caught in my trap earlier wink

I am EgunMogaji, I know how to trap, domesticate and release wild animals grin

PS: The clean up in the attic required strong chemicals because you know wild undomesticated animals just pee and shyte everywhere cheesy

If you think you are a champion in trowing insults and jabs, someone out there might be greater than you.
He wouldn't have gave up if it was some particular set of ppl here. Respect is reciprocal.

If the accused make any comment from now, there will be traffic here to create nuisance and I wouldn't want that. angry

Both parties should serve same ban for breaking rule 2.

Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by lastpage: 6:28pm On Jul 13, 2016
I was reading an alternative energy thread and saw the following dialogue.
I cant remember if we have discussed integrated energy solutions in our builds, on this thread but l also agree that it is cheaper if one can plan it during the construction stage.
For example,
*you can decide from the onset, if you need a safe store room to store your batteries,
*the Shape of your roof or if yo are using a Flat roof, where it would face (since Solar "charging efficiency" is also affected by the positioning angle of the Panels, to the sun otherwise, you might just be in the "shadow" of the sun, for most part of the day! ),
*to have a separate (dual) wiring system or a "switch-over" system that uses the same wiring and many more considerations,
*wire your home for energy efficiency appliances, e.t.c

So, it is worth the while, if we discuss issues around this.

Like l said, l saw the dialogue below on another thread of the similar purpose and what the "expert" said, got me concerned

EgunMogaji:

I'll be doing a full standalone system for a 2 bedroom apartment.

I intend to store the batteries indoors, is there a safety issue?

RESPONSE

Charpell:

Batteries are always safe. However ensure there is adequate ventilation around the environment your battery will stay

Firstly, batteries are NOT ALWAYS SAFE!

Batteries are known to explode and even catch fire! Even common "Phone batteries" have caught fire right in people's pocket! undecided grin

Batteries contain "chemicals", some of which are corrosive (acidic) and some of which can be very explosive when they generate other gases in their process of reaction.

Batteries generate (or re-generate) energy through a process of chemical reaction in which various gases are produced.
These gases are not meant to be inhaled and could be very dangerous if inhaled.

Such gases are produced as the battery charges and discharges.
The accumulation of such gas can lead to an explosion of the battery if it does not find a way to vent, hence, batteries are produced with "vents" to allow such gas to leave the battery.

When installed INSIDE the house, such gases are vented into the house and being a "closed environment", humans inhabiting such house will then breath-in such gases, which will affect their lungs especially and other body organs, reduce the amount of oxygen in circulation within the enclosed house and cause even further organ damage, amongst other ailments.

If not allow to properly vent such gases, the battery will build-up pressure and explode, pouring its acid-contents on the occupants and environment. This can be dangerous and the potential for a fire starting is also very high.

if possible, there should be a minimum distance between human occupied rooms and where battery are stored, despite being ventilated.

In light of the above, l will suggest that we incorporate a "battery bank" room/store in our build, right from the architectural design stage, bearing in mind that the further away the battery (ies) are, from the source of energy (Solar Panels), relative to the distribution Board, the longer the length of Cables that will be needed to convey the generated energy, to the battery and equipments using it.

This has grave implication for us in terms of COST because aside the increased cost of wiring, there is also the cost associated with "energy loss" in electrical cables (resistance) such that we may be losing a large proportion of the energy we spent money to generate (from our energy source like Solar Panels) in form of heat, as it travels through the lengthy Cables.

We need to strike a balance between "safety" and "cost" when chosing a location to store the batteries.

There is where adequate planning at the design/building stage of our houses/builds become important

Hajji has done something about it very long ago... I have requested that the Moderator close this thread way back when all this wahala started.
But since we don't have any Moderator in this Forum anymore, it makes the derailment continues..
There is a rude way to close this thread but since I am not that rude I will not resort to that option.

Thank you Brab,

Compliments observed with all humility.

Like it said by our elders, "You can only give what you have"...... "An apple does not fall far from its Tree"!

All you need do is "read and observe" the behaviour on this thread.

I understand provocation or anger (which we are all subject to, once in a while) but what l dont understand is this wanton desire to just be garrulous and uncouth, ......while instigating discord amongst other members! shocked angry

Anyway, such is life...... undecided its the "free" internet!

Lastpage!

I wanted to ask but forgot: Was a Soil test done on that building that you showcased, along with that one with a floating raft?
I love the way you did the Floating raft such that Water can move freely under the Rafts, if need-be.... within the four walls the room-foundation (unlike what l have seen before where if water gets in there, it will be stuck there until it evaporates or sink into the ground, of its own accord).

Please ALWAYS INSIST on a Soil test, for anything more than a Bungalow.
I know "we Clients" want to "economise" but when the wahala starts, the Builder gets the blame. undecided undecided

Be "circumspect" in what you reply to, some questions are actually intended to 'draw you out', so "sharks" can come home to feast, ....figuratively speaking. undecided undecided
