After years languishing behind competitors at home and abroad, Russia’s iconic MiG aircraft manufacturer has been thrown a lifeline. The company is now building 46 brand-new MiG-29M fighter jets in a contract reported to be worth at least $2 billion dollars.
Yet despite the hints which have appeared in the Russian press over the past year, official confirmation remains elusive. The jets are being built for an unspecified buyer. Only a shareholder’s report released by a MiG component supplier has confirmed that the order is real. The document outlines a deal for 92 engines used in the MiG-29. With two engines in each fighter, the contract corresponds with reports of a 46-fighter contract in the works.
Yet the key question remains – who are these fighters for?
Forty-six combat jets represents a large arms deal, and one that the MiG company desperately needs. The company has lost several major contracts to both foreign and domestic competitors over the past two decades, and is struggling to keep up with the competition. It has also failed to deliver on signed contracts to major Russian customers such as India.
“Russia has not formally announced the deal because of previous delays on contracts. When you announce a deal and something goes wrong, the damage to your image as a reliable procurer is enormous,” says Yury Barmin, an expert on Russian foreign affairs.
Who’s Buying?
The leading candidate for the 46 MiGs is Egypt. Speculation is largely fueled by enigmatic statements from Russian defense industry officials at trade shows and press conferences over the past year. The official line is that the MiGs are going to North Africa, and that the exact customer cannot yet be named. Russia’s Vedomosti newspaper in May last year reported that the jets were going to Egypt as part of a $3.5 billion arms deal signed by President Vladimir Putin and Egyptian President Abdel el-Sisi in April 2015.
Any potential deal with Egypt would make good, geopolitical sense. Moscow is working to solidify its role as partner and arms dealer to Sisi’s government: taking advantage of a void left by the United States, which began distancing itself from Egypt after Sisi came to power in 2014. Given that Russia’s export catalogue amounts to some $14 to $15 billion annually, a $2 billion MiG contract – which appears to be scheduled to be fulfilled over the course of 2016 to 2018 – is a big win for Russia.

First Nigeria-South Africa Defence Industry Seminar held in Nigeria

A South African delegation led by Secretary for Defence Sam Gulube has participated in the inaugural Nigeria-South Africa Defence Industry Seminar (NIGSA) in Abuja, Nigeria.

Seventeen South African companies took part in the seminar between 18 and 19 July at the National Defence College in Abuja, Nigeria, according to the Aerospace Maritime Defence Industries Association (AMD) of South Africa, which said the event showed defence cooperation is taken seriously by both nations.

Besides AMD and Armscor, South African companies attending the seminar included DCD Protected Mobility, Denel Group, Turbomeca Africa, SAAB Grintek Defence, Paramount Group, Reutech Communications, CSIR, Floida Engineering Services, Integrated Convoy Protection – (REVA), Megaray Limited, Rippel Effect Systems, Twiga Services and Logistics, Thorax and Weatherhaven Africa.

"NIGSA is coming at a time when Africa was faced with serious challenges such terrorism, drug smuggling and human trafficking," said Ambassador Danjuma Nanpon Sheni, Permanent Secretary, Nigerian Ministry of Defence. "The vital and historic seminar will examine our respective strengths, and articulate potentials between the two countries to enhance the performance and fruitful reserves to boost relations between our nations. This will ensure modernisation of defence industries in our countries and across Africa."

At the time it was agreed that Nigeria would host the defence industry seminar, tagged Nigeria-South Africa (NIGSA) Inaugural Defence Industry Seminar, to be followed by a defence committee meeting. The meeting would focus on military technical corporation; defence exchange programmes and joint military exercises, training and research and development .

well from the article it appears that Egypt might not be the ONLY customer for the new MIGs, from the WHOLE article which I didn't paste here because of the lenght, the writer assumes that the UNKNOWN customer is from Africa.

so your guess is as good as mine as to who the AFRICAN country might be...

United Arab Emirates (UAE) has ordered another 24 RG31 armoured mortar carriers from DENEL

South Africa's state-owned defence company Denel revealed on 20 July that the armed forces of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has ordered another 24 RG31 armoured mortar carriers when it said eight had been shipped to Abu Dhabi.

Denel said the International Golden Group (IGG), the Emirati company acting as prime contractor, would fit additional customised equipment before delivering the vehicles to the UAE's military.

Denel noted 73 such vehicles have already been delivered to the UAE, but the new ones incorporate around 30 performance and reliability improvements.

Produced by BAE Land Systems South Africa, which is now part of Denel, the RG31 is the platform for the UAE's Agrab, which uses the ST Kinetics 120 mm Super Rapid Advanced Mortar System (SRAMS).

Djibouti receives two Y-12 transports

Djibouti's air force held a ceremony on 15 July to mark the arrival of two new Harbin Y-12 light transport aircraft.

"The acquisition of this new equipment will help increase the operational potential of the Djibouti Armed Forces (FAD)," the official ADI news agency quoted commander of the air force Colonel Moussa Wahib as saying. Col Wahib added that the pilots and maintenance crews had completed their training.

The FAD already operates a Chinese-made aircraft in the form of a Xi'an Aircraft Corporation MA60 transport aircraft that it received in June 2014.
