US military plane makes emergency landing on Russian airstrip.
Washington (CNN)At the same time that political tensions between Washington and Moscow were raging this week, the US and Russia calmly handled the emergency landing of a US military aircraft in western Siberia, according to the Pentagon.

The incident occurred Wednesday when the landing gear of a US observation flight malfunctioned and the plane had to make an unplanned landing in a Russian airstrip near the Chinese border.
The OC-135B observation aircraft had taken off from a Russian airfield at Ulan Ude for a scheduled observation flight conducted under the terms of the Open Skies Treaty.
That treaty allows both countries to fly unarmed observation aircraft over each other's territory. The flights are intended to be confidence-building measures and are subject to provisions for openness and transparency on the information being collected via cameras and other sensors.
On this mission, the US aircraft -- with Russian observers on board -- took off to start its designated observation flight plan, but the aircraft landing gear did not retract.
The US commander, in cooperation with the Russian escort crew on board diverted the aircraft to Khabarovsk "so the aircraft could exit Russia in the most direct route possible," Pentagon spokeswoman Lt. Col. Michelle L. Baldanza told CNN. "Due to aircraft performance limitations associated with summer temperatures and the landing gear malfunction, the Khabarovsk runway represented the only safe location to land."
That airfield is not normally used under the treaty for US aircraft to exit out of Russia.
The Russian on-board crew verified that no imagery was collected during the flight and the aircraft then flew on to Japan, where it is being repaired.
The Pentagon was adamant this was not a spy mission because all portions of the flight and sensor equipment on board are open to the Russians to observe.

It's an Open Skies flight. The Russians are due to fly over the UK in 2 weeks time. The aircrafts are fitted with cameras but not very powerful cameras or espionage equipment, also each country signed up to the Open Skies agreement is aware of the equipment onboard and flight plan of the surveillance plane.

Nice images. We need to look at investing in additional IFVs as well as Tanks. Even if it's 35 IFVs a year for 5 years. The Tanks are great, but with the BTR-3U seemingly out of Commission and not enough of serviceable Sagie Tank destroyers available there's no heavy rapid fire support available, we need to replace our IFV/AFV fleet.


The Scorpion is also old.

We have 5 operational Gulma drones. I used to have an idea, but i seem to have lost the data. However it's right here in Nairaland.com, i posted it when the UAV was launched in 2013. It's characteristics are almost identical to the South-African Hungwe drone, and it has a 6 hours endurance. I recall back then i invited the UAV Engineers who built the drone to tell us more right here and on Beeg's Blog.


We probably are, you cannot tell. There was a report i posted a couple weeks back with the NAF chief claiming that engineers were trying to mount missiles and rocket pods on NAF Drones.


I suspect we are working on a MALE UAV at this point.

The National Assembly’s Departmental Committee on Defence and Foreign Relations has proposed a further amendment to the Kenya Defence Forces (Amendment) Bill, 2015 to compel the Cabinet secretary in charge of Defence to disclose where the troops are deployed, and the expenditure incurred or is expected to be incurred.


“The proposed amendment seeks to include expenditure incurred or expected to be incurred during deployment of Defence Forces as one of items that the Cabinet secretary should disclose to the National Assembly,” the committee said in its report on the amendment Bill.


The Bill, which is sponsored by the government, was published on July 22, 2015. MPs commenced debate on the Bill last Thursday after Majority Leader Aden Duale moved it through the second reading.


Section 13 of the Bill seeks to amend clause 31 of the KDF Act, 2012 that allows the KDF to co-operate with other authorities like the Kenya Police.


The parent Act stipulates that the Defence Forces shall assist and co-operate with other authorities in situations of emergency or disaster, and report to the National Assembly whenever the military is deployed in such circumstances.


It says that the KDF personnel may be deployed to restore peace in any part of Kenya affected by unrest or instability but only with the approval of the National Assembly and shall, in the interest of national security, co-operate and work with other security organs in the discharge of its constitutional mandate.


Through the proposed amendment, the committee has expanded the scope of the KDF Act to require that where the Defence Forces are deployed for any purpose, the Cabinet Secretary shall inform the National Assembly promptly the reasons for such deployment, place where they are being deployed and the period for which they are expected to be deployed.


“If the National Assembly is not in session during the first seven days after the deployment of the Defence Forces, the Cabinet Secretary shall provide the information required to the Speaker of the National Assembly,” the Bill states.


Committee chairman Ndung’u Gethenji argues in the committee report that clause 13 of the amendment Bill, as originally drafted, had removed the need for the Cabinet Secretary to inform the National Assembly where the Defence Forces are deployed, and expenditure incurred or expected to be incurred.


“This is in violation of Article 201 of the Constitution, which outlines openness and accountability as one of the guiding principles in financial matters,” Mr Gethenji said in the report signed by 15 MPs who sit on the 28-member committee.


The KDF moved into the war-torn horn of African nation in 2011 in pursuit of the Islamist militants who had staged numerous terrorist attacks and kidnappings of Kenyan and foreign citizens.



Kenya suffered a spate of terrorist attacks to which western governments responded with travel advisories warning their citizens from visiting the East African nation.

what company manufactured NNS Andoni ?

Navy Engineering Services Limited (NESL) built the NNS Andoni. They are a Nigerian Navy Holdings company, they are responsible for the design, construction and maintenance of NNS Andoni and other Naval ships (NNS Thunder, Okpabana, etc ).

They built the recently launched Tug boat.


The company specialises in building vessels which are between 15 - 50 meters in length. They are currently working on a 40 meters SDB II which is currently undergoing sea acceptance trials.

We need 5 more vessels in the 45 meters class to be able to cover our EEZ and Littoral combat area. 5 more units should cost the Navy around $100 million, while we free up the heavy ships to patrol off-shore and deep-water.


Something similar to this South-Korea missile craft would do just fine. Simply replace the 76 mm gun and Rockets with 2 30mm RWS ( one rear, one front).

I don't know the status of the BTR-3U, however the BTR-4E's are used in frontline operations in the N.E.

South Korea launches first PKX-B missile craft.


In Nigeria, this would be classified as a "battleship", but in South-Korea, this is just an armed patrol vessel.


South-Korea's new 44 meters PKX-B patrol craft, 16 to be inducted by the end of 2017 with numbers expected to grow to as many as 32.

I absolutely love the PKX-B patrol craft. I've not seen a better craft in it's class, especially in armament and engine propulsion.

I'm not a decision maker, however we have outgrown that stage where we need to develop industry by upgrading a class of vessels we are already conversant with.


We are not re-inventing the wheel, it already exists.

Realistically, our best option is South-Africa's Paramount Group Mbombe 4.


Yes, it doesn't set the world alight interms of it's design or armament, but it's an off-road vehicle that works. It's basically an MRAP on 6 wheels which can be fitted with a 30mm/ ATGM or 12.7mm RWS.

Unit price - $1,000,000, it has a decent price range, this was what was sold to Jordan and it includes local assembly (Jobs). The South-Africans are very good in building MRAPs and general land systems the Mbombe 4 is yet another example of that. Excellent off-road capabilities, and in the future ceramic armour or Dyneema which Proforce Nigeria has been experimenting with could be added to improve crew protection.


The vehicle would suffer in the south of Nigeria, for the south, we would require tracked vehicles, however for the Central and Northern regions i don't see what can stop it.


Fire power, it carries a 30 mm RWS, there's also the ATGM variant and the 12.7mm variant. However there are multiple choices of combined RWS available in the market we could go for. The Slovenians just launched a beautiful system.


Local assembly prospects, Jordan is buying only 50 units and it includes a local manufacturing agreement, the Mbombe 4 is also manufactured in Kazhkztan. So the manufacturer would be willing to build right here in Nigeria.


IFVs are by definition meant to transport troops to the front and also support them, and the Mbombe is designed to do just that. The Mbombe 4 is my best option.

It's a very decent transport plane. Would be a good replacement for older C-130s.
