Re: African Militaries/ Security Services Strictly Photos Only And Videos Thread by Nobody: 9:19am On Aug 03, 2016 |
MikeCZA: It depends on the type of armour. Adding a light weight, more flexible armour wouldn't affect the vehicles overall mobility. Non-state actors are now better armed, however not as well armed as similar actors in the Middle-East, at least not yet. The French deployed all that stuff just as a show off. They didn't require a lot of those systems they deployed. Take the Tchadians for an example, they didn't even deploy 1/4 of the equipment the French deployed, but you'll agree with me that through out the entire campaign they (Tchadians) were just as successful as the French. Photo related, Israel's new 8x8 APC.

MikeCZA: Yeah.... To be honest, i think it's quite worrying. However on the flip side, it means the NAF has a steady stream of young pilots it graduates across the board, who would have many more years to give to the Nigerian Air Force. |

IS appoints new West Africa leader Tomi Oladipo BBC Africa security correspondent Posted at 10:52 The so-called Islamic State (IS) jihadist group has announced a new leader for its West African branch, popularly known as Boko Haram. The latest issue of an IS magazine featured what it called its first interview with Abu Musab al-Barnawi, who replaces the eccentric Abubakar Shekau. In a video clip released in January 2015, Mr al-Barnawi described himself as the spokesman for Boko Haram. This was before the Nigeria-based jihadist group pledged allegiance to IS. Now IS says he has replaced Mr Shekau, who has not made a verified appearance in any video since August 2015. |

Henry240:They needed all that equipment. As you can see this APC is a heavy 8×8 vehicle not in the class of the Mbombe 6×6. It is in the class of the Denel vehicles systems RG-41 APC. Chad's success relied on the French. |

MikeCZA: It's insincere to claim Tchadian success relied on the French. Tchadian superiority of local knowledge of the area, local intel were the deciding factors. Infact, the Tchadians had a more successful campaign in Mali than the French with all their equipment. I've seen 3 Documentaries on French operations in Mali, and have read local accounts. The French went to Mali with all that equipment primarily to show off. Nothing else! I mean in one of the documentaries 200 French paratroopers (Special Infantry) could not take on 13 local jihadist. The Paras had to call in Helicopter support and Caesar artillery. The French Paras had, their automatic weapons (Famas), FN-Minimi, High-powered sniper rifles and commando mortars. The French did not need all that equipment in Mali. The APC has heavier Armour, but it's mobility isn't compromised. That's the point I'm trying to make. 1 Like |

You should've been here a few pages back when everyone was yelping about their fav bullpup rifle not knowing those pea shooters are useless beyond 300 metres or in thick bush or grass. Btw,am I the only one who finds those rifles hideous-seriously!? |

Henry240: Isreal does not worry about mobility. Hence why they feild the Namer... how much does this thing weigh in at? |
Re: African Militaries/ Security Services Strictly Photos Only And Videos Thread by Nobody: 1:23pm On Aug 03, 2016 |
patches689: It weighs in at under 35 Tons, and flies at 95KM/H, carries 12. It would be armed with a 30mm or 40mm turret. So as you can sea, the Israelis do care about mobility. |
Re: African Militaries/ Security Services Strictly Photos Only And Videos Thread by patches689: 1:24pm On Aug 03, 2016 |
Henry240: Thats an incredibly bad interpretation. Ludicrous infact. And no, the Tchadians did not do more than the French. The French captured Timbuktu and Gao single highhandedly, Chad only played a supporting role in the operation in Kidal, only moving in when the French had completed their air-assault. Every single major engagement was fought by the French, every single stronghold captured was done so by the French. The French moved from one end of Mali to the other, they had long supply lines to secure thus long range high mobility arty was essential. Saying you brought to much firepower to a war, this... like... seriously brah? Finally, you add more armor, you lose mobility. Laws of physics dictate this. 1 Like |

tdayof: This is still an excellent platform;cheap to maintain also. The KAF used the hawk jets. But the cost of spares! They were mothballed over a decade ago for that reason. IIRC there were 8. Imo,the Alpha makers made a major blunder not producing a mk 2. Now the market is much tougher with K8s,Su 25s and Hawks, despite it having certain advantages like cheaper maintenance, speed and 2 engines over the latter. |

Henry240: Mbombe is lighter, faster and I well bet that it has better range. Speed can be your armor. You dont know the range, or its offroad performance so you cant really say anything about mobility. You can get a heavy IFV... but dont be suprised when people with lighter faster vehicles run rings around you. Isreal does not need to worry about mobility... they fight their wars 30min from their army bases in very confined operational areas. When more info comes out, I know that it will reflect this. For refrence, during the later years of the border war, one of our Mechanised Battalions did a 250km advance-to-contact. Now think about this, they had to drive 250km away from friendly lines (allready inside Angola) and into no-mans land before they ran into their first enemy. The term "mobility" itself does not only relate to the vehicles characteristics, but to the vehicles ability to operate in the feild without re-supply. Supply trucks are slow, re-fueling in the feild is a tedious and dangerous process, you have to protect your supply vehicles which ties up men, and slows down re-supply even more... which slows down your IFV's even more etc etc etc 700km range is a minimum... Its the one thing I dislike about the Badger, its range is not as good as the Ratels.

Re: African Militaries/ Security Services Strictly Photos Only And Videos Thread by Nobody: 5:36pm On Aug 03, 2016 |
patches689: No. The French did not do more than Tchad in Mali. The enemy did not pose a significant resistance in Timbucktu or Gao, they retreated to the mountains. Only a trickle came back and fought Malian and French forces in Timbouctou. It was the Tchadians who chased the enemy to the mountains, in one of those engagements, Chad lost 26 Soldiers while killing 95 insurgents. The French only had air superiority, and that's that. The french against a proper armed enemy would suffer severe losses. You maintain mobility when you use more durable, lighter weight armour such as Dyneema, basic physics research says this. Did you even read the exchange i had with Mike? Anyway, we are derailing the thread. |
