man is beyond shameless it's just my church mind restraining me from hurling abuses at the man-o-war wanabee

I hope i'm not the only one who woke up to this shamelessness this morning

The nerve of that man! Releasing an idiotic speech about being proud of a team you washed your hands off of more or less. These are the kind of people Sango and Amadioha are supposed to be striking even in their graves!

The shamelessness of this release is a slap on the face of every right thinking Nigerian. The only people that should be celebrating the U23 are DELTA Airlines and the USA, in fact, we shpuld even link up the Nigerian U23 to the US Olympic Team and if they win a medal, it should be listed under Team USA's medals.

Both Dalung and the daft monkey that gave him the position of Sports Minister should go and die

the blame is all encompassing. If you expect me to praise Buhari where a team is successful, then i will condemn him when they have issues.

He must collect any insults thrown at the incompetent fart HE appointed and hasn't had the sense to sack

In some way, I agree with you. Dalung is not ready for the job. He is the least performing minister. How come Amaechi, Fayemi, Fashola, Kachikwu, etc are carrying out multi Billion naira projects and Dalung is forming as if there is no money to help these young ones.

It is disappointing. However, Daft Monkey is too much.

I will not oppose a Dalung sack.

spot on rating. only adjustment i would have made is to give the lowest rated player a 5 considering the circumstances the players went through they are all heroes.

joseph1013:
[b]Player Ratings.. Nigeria 5-4 Japan: Sadiq Umar Dazzles, Four Goals Man Etebo Man Of The Match

The Nigeria U-23s started their campaign at the Rio 2016 Olympics by edging a 9 goal thriller 5-4, to move to the top of their group despite arriving Rio, few minutes to the game.

Owngoalnigeria.com, brings to you ratings based on how the players fared, done by our expert in match analysis.

Emmanuel Daniel: Made some decent saves but conceded four times, although can be excused for at least two of the goals including the penalty, Still not a good thing for a goalkepper to pick the ball out of his net four times….5/10

Seth Muenfuh: A full back playing as a central defender and as expected looked lost in the role, came up strong in the second half but still lacked the discipline of a centre back….5.5/10

Shehu Abdullahi: Won more tackles than any defender in green for Nigeria but still wasn’t adventurous enough, was also caught out of position couple of times in the game with one of such occasion leading to a goal for the Japanese….5/10

Stanley Amuzie: Struggled to cope with the pace of the Japanese on the right, gave away the penalty from which Japan leveled scores to 1-1, a very poor showing from the highly rated left back….4/10

William Troost Ekong: Failed to control the backline despite been the only central defender in the defender, twice lost his man which lead to goals for the Japanese, shoulld have done better….5/10

John Obi Mikel: Captain of the team, came close to scoring with a left foot effort, kept it simple with neat touches, tired out before the end of the game, obviously struggled from jet lag, no thanks to their late arrival….5.5/10

Azubuike Okechukwu: Full of Energy and quick to turn defence into attack, put in a tireless shift all night long, unlucky not to be on the score sheet….6.5/10

Usman Mohammed: By his standard had an average showing, the former FC Taraba man didn’t do enough defensive job and was guilty of venturing far into the opponent box, which gave Japan enough space to exploit….5.5/10

Imoh Ezekiel: What a performance, strong, good on the ball and can also hit it very well when presented with a chance, his spilled effort was tapped in by Sadiq Umar for Nigeria’s first…..6.5/10

Ogenekaro Etebo: Four goals, which include a penalty says it all, truly a delight on the night, by far the best player on the pitch for both sides, should get a 10/10 but for greed sake, we keeping one for ourselves….9/10

Sadiq Umar: “New Kanu” , although he loves it when he is called “Jololo” , scored and created two goals, hold up play about the best Nigeria has seen in a player in a while, the AS Roma start is surely a star in the making….8/10

Substitutes:

Kingsley Madu: First substitute introduced for Usman Mohammed to help shore up the Nigeria backline with scores at 5-3, but was no where close when Japan got their fourth goal of the game….4/10

Ndifreke Udoh: Replaced Ezekiel but didn’t do enough to justify his inclusion, although he did some defending for the team….4/10

Sadiq Popoola: Came in for Mikel Obi and the petit midfielder who provokes comparism with French midfielder Mathieu Valuebuena, helped in keeping possession for Nigeria with some neat and deft touches….5/10

The minister will do well in dropping the name Solomon and just go by as Mr Damlong. He's obviously not a wise man. But I wonder if the Directors and permanent secretaries are doing their job in guiding the minister properly.
As we all know, ministerial appointments are purely political. The so called technocrats doing the heavy lifting should be the Director and permanent Secretary. Apparently a lot of people aren't doing jobs. Calls for the minister's resignation should be extended to other principal in the ministry.

To the game, the standout player, Etebo is a freak. His stats read: Warrior wolves: 64 appearances, 25 goals. Super Eagles: 6 appearances 1 goal. Nigerian U-23 team ie Dream Team: 17 appearances 11 goals. And I’m not sure that includes the 4 goals he scored yesterday against Japan.
These are silly numbers for a central midfielder. Even Pogba, Vidal and Co will struggle to get those numbers.

It's worth pointing out that the super eagles got eliminated for the Afcon by Egypt when he got injured and was replaced. We practically conceeded when he got replaced.

He's the definition of a diamond in the rough. What a player we have on our hands

Nice following nairaland.just joined. In my humble opinion,we did not parade our best defenders. The team's achilles heels has always been the inexperienced defence made up of academicals, amuzie, sincere, ndifreke, all an average of 18 years old.Siasia always sticks to his boys. You wont wonder why they lost scandalously to average teams in suwon and even to th flying eagles academicals. If mikel and sadiq can come,i wonder why NFF didnt play their cards well concerning bringing in musa, omeruo, ndidi or even ganiyu ogungbe, oluwasemilogo ajayi?. Meanwhile, mikel just came to add the olympics to his CV.That littleman, popoola is better though highly underrated by many teams due to his size.Though our midfield is packed with great players,i believe an addition of obinna nwobodo or ifeanyi Mathew would have been valuable. These guys and young, skillful and experienced

Nice dig. Those are some awesome stats. We have another monster midfielder. I hope the others step up in the next game. We should not be careless. The Swedes will study our weaknesses when we attack.

I hope Usman comes to the party in the next game. I am expecting Mikel to put up a better show also. If these guys raise their games, then we are in for a treat.

Coach Siasia should do more defense drills.

I do not like Analysing Siasia's games because he has a totally different philosophy from my view. His all out attack system. He sticks to it and believes it. If not I would have preferred a disciplined defensive performance from our midfielders minus Etebor.

Siasia's gong-ho style has cost us on many occasions.
The two Afcon qualifiers failure, especially the game against Egypt in Kaduna as a case study.

The only time Siasia has played sensible organised game in defence was the 0:1 loss to Ghana in Accra where we edged out the hosts and qualified for the Beijing Olympics via goal difference.
Who are his assistants in this tourney?

Strikers win you games but Defenders win you titles.

Siasia's philosophy will always remain his philosophy.

We outscored Japan. But it's high time Siasia gets the best 4 defenders for the rest of the tournament. Common, how can a Coach go for a tournament with just one CB in William troost - Ekong??.

Other teams will want to explore our weaknesses. It's high time Siasia do something about the defense line. Mikel and Azubiekwe should be made to sit deep to shield the defense.
Emmanuel Daniel was exposed by the defenders again and again making him look like a bad goal keeper.

Our Midfield and Attack is very potent. Kudos to all the players and the crew, despite all the odds against them they made Nigerians proud.

Let us see how he sets up against Sweden. This will show if he has grown since the Suwon Tourney. Sweden is not Japan.

I do not want to deliberate much on Coach Siasia's tactics because some coaches believe attack is the best form of Defence.

However, we need to keep the ball well and not losing it when we have gaps behind us.

I see Seth picking up. There is this thing of moving tall wingbacks to Central defence like Sagna, Marquinho, Ramos.

That is what Coach Siasia wants to achieve with Seth. I think the unfamiliarity with the role affected his game. There was also the stress of the game factor.

Let us judge Seth after the second game.

When the Finance Minister, Kemi Adeosun bailed States last month, Dalung should have applied to her for support.

Leaving the National teams stranded was bad. Pinnick, reduce your ego. Learn to deal with Dalung's pride.

U know, one thing that strikes me is his shooting accuracy.

U forgot to also mention that he was highest goals scorer at the CAF U23 which earned him enough points to win the most promising young player award.

He has good eyes for goals just like Iheanacho. At a point in time on this forum there was an argument about who was better between him and Iheanacho. I am thinking that guy should be converted to a supporting striker. He and Iheanacho combination would become "shot the goal post at sight". Iheanacho as a CF and Etebo as SS. God help us to qualify for Russia 2018. cool

What a lose.

One of my then favorite players. We bare the same first name (Peter). I was nicknamed Ogaba in school those days bc of this lad.

I can recall vividly the role the 13yrs old Peter Ogaba played at Canada '87. How would I forget his champaign performance in that semi-final against Italy? He tried his best against a highly gifted Capellini even despite his size then.

He also played U21 at age 15.
He went out of the lime light just like Philip Osondu, Chris Nwosu, Taiwo Eneguwa, Dimeji Lawal, Lemy Isa and the rest of his Canada '87 class.

That white on Green jersey in that pix was what they used for most of that tourney. Hmmmm memories... sad

Rest in peace Peter Ogaba. sad

Mikel may likely not cope as a CB because of his lack of pace and slower reflexes due to his age.

Football at this age grade level is played with plenty of pace. I would say Mikel should fall back to CMF position were he can also support Azubuike in the DMF role when the need arises. Aminu Usman who is a more pacey player and has good eyes for goals should be drafted to the AM position. He can also fall deep into the midfield often to initiate attacks with his pace. Etebo, Ezekiel and Sadiq need players who can throw the passes at them more quickly. Usman Muhammed can start from the bench.

Oh how I wish Iwobi, Iheanacho and Omeruo made this trip.

Same thing that came to my mind. Pace.

In the defence, a fast player will take him out. Similar to what Manchester City suffered with Demeichelis.

Give me a second to close my eyes. How did Pellegrini expect Demeichelis to cope with Messi. Same with Mahrez.

Demeichelis survived because of his wealth of experience and playing at a high level for very long.

He still suffered when he met pacy players.

CMF/DMF is best for Mikel where he would not need pace to deal make a good impact. More of positional sense and match reading. Interceptions will be key.

I still opt for Mikel behind Azubuike. Four goals was heavy. We need more cover.

A lawyer is not so bad for the job, most sports officials around the world are lawyers who have never played the game. I ask what power does the minister have he can't hire or fire the NFF or the NOC, it would piss u off if u keep giving me money and i don't hear word. Who sends players to another country without money and a ticket out of there? That is almost human trafficing. I don't blame the minister that much, the blame really lies on the NOC and NFF but if the government tries to investigate them fifa will ban us. The system is created to keep African countries down simple and plain. Where else does the money come from? If the government can spend millions on football it makes sense that they should be at least kept along in the decision making. If i pay u then who do u work for?

An agency, evolves to become a minister in such field because of the level of experience.

Technocracy is an organizational structure or system of governance where decision-makers are selected on the basis of technological knowledge.

In a technocracy, decision makers would be selected based upon how knowledgeable and skillful they are in their field.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technocracy?_e_pi_=7%2CPAGE_ID10%2C3764203556

So a foremost attribute of “good” minister is technocracy, without it, the ministry suffers from botched administration just as the current ministries in Nigeria now. The minister is able to make nifty decisions when he possesses dexterity from experience.

Okonjo Iweala was appointed to direct the economic affairs of Nigeria because she took Economics and was proficient in it.

Sack Dalung now, Youth Council President tells Buhari

President, National Youth Council of Nigeria, NYCN, Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere has told President Muhammadu Buhari to relieve the Minister of Youths and Sports Development, Solomon Dalung, for allegedly abandoning the U-23 football team in the ongoing Olympic tournament, in Rio Brazil.

Ugochinyere who is also senior special assistant to the Senate President, Bukola Saraki on youths and student matters, expressed dismay over the alleged ill treatment meted out to the Dream team that led to their being stranded in the United States.

In a statement in Abuja, the NYCN president said, “Nigerians are still in shock by the comments of the Minister of Youth and Sports Development Barr. Solomon Dalung clearly left the Nigeria national Under23 football team to their fate after it was put to him by journalists that the team was suffering and stranded in the United States of Nigeria.“If the Minister were on top of his game, he would have ordinarily known where and how the team was training for the Olympics, but he did not know. Mr. Dalung was only interested in the money he was going to make from the games.

“It was Dalung who as Minister of sports allowed Nigerian athletes who have qualified for the games to go online to source funds for their air tickets. This last resort of fund raising online by the athletes is an one that arose clearly out of the Minister’s incompetence.”

Ugochinyere stated that beyond the comments of the Minister which allegedly were meant to embarrass the entire nation further, the team was abandoned in the US and was only able to arrive Manaus, venue of their match few hours to kick off after an 8 hour long flight.

He said, “The binding force of football in our country cannot be over emphasized and the pride of having our national anthem rendered to the attention of the entire world at the Olympics cannot be rivaled by any other feeling.

“Minister Dalung has failed in his duty to coordinate the Nigeria Olympic Committee and all other Federations as is expected of him. Mr. President should not hesitate to relieve him of his duties before he brings our dear nation to more international disrepute.

”He, however, commended the National U-23 football patriots who despite the atrocious abandonment went ahead to beat their Japanese opponents and make our nation proud.

“It is clear they are not holding it against the nation as they have identified it is the incompetence of one man that was responsible for their plight.

“We wish them and indeed all other athletes proudly donning the famous green-white-green to endeavour to compete clean and bring back laurels to our country without paying attention to the incompetence of Minister Dalung.”

God help us to qualify for Russia 2018. cool
The partnership of Andy cole and Yorke comes to mind,I don't think both of them r centre forwards both their partnership was very effective

Etebo as a striker? Well, I think he is better off a midfielder. He is the modern day box to box midfielder. You know, Goal scoring midfielders are like hot cake these days. He is of that breed although he still have to work on his stamina because I notice he tires out most times in 2nd half of games. He also improve on his ball recovery and interception to be a complete midfielder.
Generally, the ultimate winners will be his Portuguese club, they will be rubbing their palms in delight because they will sell him on for a handsome profit. Warri Wolves would be mad not to include a sell on percentage on his contract.

On Iheanacho, let's keep our fingers crossed. Pep Guadiola is an adherent of the Joan Cruyff school of thought, which is that a complete player should play multiple positions. That is why you see Pep converting Alaba and Javier Martinez to ball playing centre defenders. Lahm as a midfielder in some games.
It's not entirely out of character for Pep to play Iheanacho on the left or right wing. He loves those kind of tweeks.
