Snail farming is an art of rearing snails for commercial and subsistence purposes. The process of rearing snail is called helicicuiture (meaning snail culture). Due to its high nutritional value, snails have become a very popular delicacy. Snail meat is very rich in calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, selenium, vitamin E, vitamin C, protein, iron, fat (0.05 to 0.08%), etc. Because of this nutritional values, the meat stands as a very good alternative to red meat, this is even why the consumption of snail meat is gaining preference. Snails are crawling creatures which are always found in the bushes, wet land areas, River banks and forests of the world, especially in the tropics. There are many types of snails which can be identified by the environment in which they are found: Land snail, fresh water snails and marine (salt water) snails. But for the purpose of this thread, we will be concentrating on the Land snails which is commonly known as Giant Africa Large Snail. 7 Likes 3 Shares |

Identifying the key features Generally, the Giant Africa Large Snails (GALS) may look the same in appearance to consumers because it has foot (fleshy part) and shell. But this can't be said for the farmers. In identifying the common distinguishing features among the snail type under review. You are to note the following: 1. Achatina-Fulica (AF): This snail has very pointed tail. Dark shell, though, very similar shell colour is sometimes found among the Marginata's but with clear difference on the foot colour. It has over 7 rings/circle/curved. AF is usually very smaller in size compare to AM and AA. The snail size also reflect on its eggs size. Though, it produces between 100 to 150 eggs a clutch. 2. Achatina-Marginata (AM). This snail really represent in terms of it giant size. It has a blunt tail-end. AM has 5 and below rings/round-curve. It has various colours depending on its immediate environment. Though, usually brownish with some dark colour design. It lays between 9 to 12 eggs a clutch. The eggs are usually the biggest in size and the baby snail grows faster compare to AF and AA. This makes it more viable for business. Achatina-Achatina (AA): This is popularly referred to as Ghana tiger. Because it is mainly found in Ghana, the extra giant size and the designs on the shell. It has a yellowish and darkish spine on the shell which has close similarity with a tiger colour. AA has a very pointed tail just like AF. It usually has 7 or more rings "round-curved" on the shell. it can lay between 200 to 400 eggs a clutch. The eggs are the smallest among the three. Though, it grows slower compare to AM, but it is the biggest on the long run. It is also good for business. but it requires a lot of patients and extra care, it appear to be more delicate. REPRODUCTION IN SNAILS Giant Africa Large Snails are hermaphrodite in nature by possessing both the male and female reproductive system. Here is a quick rundown of the reproduction stages: COURTSHIP Snail reproduction actually starts from this stage. Just like humans, this process involves the search/networking of two mature snails ready for the ceremony of mating. MATING This is the second stage in snail reproduction, having located the right partner. The snails begin the mating process, during which sperm are been reciprocally exchanged for the purpose of fertilising each other. The mating ceremony can take as long as 5-15 hours for mating to complete. EGGS PRODUCTION Eggs production are actually the expected end after mating/fertilisation exercise are completed. It takes between 20 to 30 days for the eggs to be hatched after laying. During the cause of laying, snails can wrongly drop their eggs. As a farmer, you are to assist to ensuring proper placement of the eggs (5-15cm) below the soil. You can also consider eggs transfer/incubation. INCUBATION: Eggs may be incubated in a hatchery. This may be wooden or metallic box or plastic container. The base of the box or container should be perforated before putting humus or loamy soil in it. The lid of the box or container should be of mosquito netting. The collected eggs should be placed in holes dug 3-5cm deep and lightly covered with soil and of course shaded from direct sunlight. The eggs should be watered every other day until they hatch. Note: Snails can hold back their eggs (refuse to lay) if they sense an unconducive environment. So, ensure your snails are always in good conditions generally. * Don't assist the about to be hatched snails by removing any shell from it, even when you can see the juvenile inside the shell. JUVENILE CARE This are the young/baby snails. After been hatched out of their shell. The juvenile often consume their shells as the first contact to feed and crave for calcium. When they finally reveal themselves from the soil cover, you are to feed them with fresh and wet vegetables, ensure a lot is within their reach as they may not be able to do distance search for feed. You are to maintain this at least within their first 3 months. Now about transfer/separating them: this is where a lot of snail farmers make mistakes by separating them too early. Note: We earlier mentioned that snails are active at night (nocturnal animal), and as such feed accordingly. This doesn't applied to the juveniles, as babies they can eat whenever they are feeling hungry. They are active night and day. GROW OUT This involves the final stage, often referred to by you as big snails. Starting from the point of lay (medium size) to the giant size. Please, find attached pictures for visuals explanation. 3 Likes 2 Shares

Virtually all human consumables can be eaten by snails with few exceptions hence they are omnivorous in nature and that is why they have been able to survive for generations. History has it that snails have been in existence since prehistoric times. Leaves and Vegetables: Some leaves eaten by snails include leaves of paw-paw, cocoyam, banana, sweet potato and cassava. Snails eat a lot of vegetables too. Some of their best vegetables include pumpkin, cabbage, lettuce, okra, water leaf, spinach, garden egg plant, amaranthus and all green vegetables that can be eaten by man. However, caution need to be applied when serving them water to avoid drowning. Agricultural by-products: agricultural by products like wheat bran, rice bran, corn, soybean, residue bran, palm kernel cake, peel of plantain and banana, fresh maize chaff etc can also be eaten by snails. Cereals: dried and processed maize, groundnut cake, soybean meal, and sorghum. Supplements: feed supplements like fishmeal and blood meal are also good for snails. Concentrates: this include poultry waste and feed, fish feed. Minerals: limestone, wood ash, fish meal, bone meal and chalk. Snails also need a lot of calcium in-take for growth and shell formation. Calcium or mineral supplement can also be derived from ground eggshell, oyster shell, bone meal or even soil. 2 Likes 2 Shares

WHY YOU SHOULD FEED YOUR SNAILS PROPERLY Feeding is very vital to all living things, as it serves as source of energy, growth and general healthy living. This is also applicable to snails as a living thing. The essence of feeding the snails is to aid reproduction capacity and increase their size, thereby expanding your investment return. Therefore, be consistent in feeding your snails. They can eat up to 3 – 5 % of their body weight in 24hours. Snails convert feed to body weight when a balanced diet containing protein, vitamin, minerals, calcium carbonate and phosphate is given to them. Agricultural chemicals in form of spray or powder should be avoided, as they are toxic to snails. Feed snails as much as they can eat, ensure useable water quantity daily. If active snails are starved of food, they will shade 2 - 5% of their body weight in 24 hours. Snails are basically fed twice in a day i.e in the evenings between 5pm - 7pm and early in the morning, between 7am-9am. Snails are nocturnal animals i.e they are more active at night. The feed items should be distributed evenly within the snailery to enhance equal feeding opportunity for all the snails. Avoid salt and salty foods since snails do not survive high salt intake. 5 Likes 2 Shares |
