These airports are playing an eminent role in economic development of the African continent. It fosters economic activity by connecting cities across the globe. Some of these airports cost a lot to construct. Here is a brief overview of the top 10 most expensive airports in Africa. 10) Maya-Maya Airport – $160 Million (Rep. Congo) Located in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo, this airport is hub for Equatorial Congo Airlines. A 3,300 meter long runway and a new terminal with air-bridges were opened in Maya-Maya Airport in 2010. 9) Bamako–Sénou International Airport – $181 Million (Mali) Located 15 km south of downtown Bamako, the Bamako-Senou International Airport is the main airport of Mali. It was opened to traffic in 1974. It was upgraded recently (2007-2012) in a $181 million project funded by United States foreign aid agency, Millennium Challenge Corporation. Addis Ababa Bole International Airport – $130 Million (Ethiopia) Expansion activities are going on in this airport. Work is in progress in the terminal, cargo and hanger areas. The runway is under expansion. Hotel construction is also in progress. Construction cost will increase after completion of the current project. 7) Cape Town International Airport (Central Terminal) –$138 MillionOpened in 1954 The Cape Town International Airport was extensively expanded and renovated in preparation for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Apart from this expansion project, it has been proposed that a second runway for large aircraft be constructed. 6) Hurghada International Airport – $155 Million (Egypt) This international airport is located in Hurghada, Egypt.Currently this airport is served by one terminal. Construction of a new terminal complex at a cost of$335 million has started. The project was inaugurated by President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi on December 17 2014. After its completion, the airport will be able to handle 13 million visitors annually. 5) Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport –$306 Million (Mauritius) A new passenger terminal was inaugurated in the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport on August 30 2013. This airport is the primary international airport in Mauritius, located southeast of the capital city of Port Louis. It became fully operational in September 2013. The structure of the new terminal resembles that of a traveler’s palm, a tropical plant that grows in the region. 4) Sharm el-Sheikh International Airport (Terminal 3) –$350 MillionFormerly Ophira International Airport This airport is located in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. On May 23 2007, thesecond terminal of the Sharm el-Sheikh International Airport was inaugurated with a capacity for 5 million passengers per year. In 2008, the Egyptian Airports Holding Company announced plans to build a third newterminal at the airport. The intention was to double the capacity. The project’s primary costs were estimated at $350 million. 3) Enfidha – Hammamet International Airport – $520 Million (Tunisia) This public airport is owned by Tunisian Airport Authority and is located in Enfidha, Tunisia. Its construction began in 2007. The airport was opened to the public on December 1 2009. 2) King Shaka International Airport – $900 Million (S. Africa) Located in La Mercy, KwaZulu-Natal, King Shaka International Airport serves Durban, South Africa. In 2013, Skytrax announced that King Shaka InternationalAirport was the best airport (under 5 million passenger category) in the world. It is the hub for SA Express. 1) O. R. Tambo International Airport – $1.5 Billion (S. Africa) The O. R. Tambo International Airport is located in Gauteng, South Africa. Major new developments took place at this airport in preparation of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The international terminal was expanded.
