Brain surgery because of meningitis? SMH
Before your head falls off from the vigorous shaking, it might interest you to know that acute bacteria meningitis sometimes is a complication of poorly treated ear infections, and can itself lead to, amongst others, hydrocephalus ("excess water" ) and subdural empyema ("pus" ) which might require surgical drainage (Craniotomy, Burr Hole, craniectomy, etc)
****
But that is not even my point. My point is, they are asking for something very radical for a simple problem which they managed to escalate within such a short period.

I know that Buhari never establish subsidy , or enact law that place embargo on importation of rice, or tell the past govts ( Jonathan ) not to save for a time like now.
Justfy your accusation by telling us how the last govt help our situation.

For those making ignorant statement that PMB cannot rule in a democratic government, democratic system does not necessarily entails unnecessary bottlenecks and bureaucracies.

This is what make developed nations different from developing countries. Countries like Germany,USA, France etc that we are always quick to compare our nation to in terms of democratic governance have extant laws that empowered their president to take emergency economic decisions for the nation's prosperity and development.

Though I'm not surprised by some people's view because their ultimate aim and desire is to see that the PMB administration fail like that of their fallen hero, and they will be quick to tell us that 'we told you guys before'.

I have a good news for those waiting eagerly for the nation's failure that it ain't gonna happen!

but for people like you. Whom I believed still has some level of sound reasoning. I would have left this forum. Good talk there.

To rescue the economy after 16 years of PDP plundering of over 38 Trillion Naira, shamelessly shut down the refineries in order to import fuel, sabotaged the power sector in order to sell diesel and generators, thereby poluting Nigerians health, awarding contracts and sharing the money without doing the contracts, ...the list in endless.
Where were we before the commencement of the "16yrs"? Where we in a state of El Dorado during the military regimes? I am very sure you have very short memories or maybe u were not even born then. The 16years of PDP brought hope and prosperity to a majority. Workers started earning "living" wages. Jobs were created. Sectors like the gsm, created wealth and opportunities to millions. Many indigenous companies sprang up in Construction, Oil & Gas and manufacturing. More roads were constructed and dualized during these "16yrs". A strong middle class was created.

There is nothing like "16 years of PDP plundering". If APC wants to work, they should work and stop giving excuses

The economic team, it was learnt, gauged the mood of the polity and decided that unless there is an urgency which some of the extant laws will not permit, “the recession may be longer than expected and Nigerians will not get the desired respite, which is the goal of this government”.

It is a shame most commenters don't get it, that our archaic laws coupled with corruption, are the major clog in the progress of this country!

This should have been done the very first month this admin took over, if they were truly prepared for the job.

I went thru the amendments they are seeking, and felt like weeping for this country, that we still run on those barbaric laws in a time of economic EMERGENCY!

. . . watch the 2 houses make a mess of this though, just as they are doing with rehabilitation/upgrade and PPP of the refineries. angry sad

Nigerians are set of petty people, we are never focused.

Government and politicians in time past made laws to suit their motives, we complained bitterly then now another government is trying to undo this same laws that have led and kept us when we are today, we are still complaining. Most times I get tired reading Nigerians comments on economic and political issues because it really saddening.

A group of experts sat down to draw up these solutions to move the country forward, instead to my people to see the merit and demerit of these actions, we are busy attacking Buhari.

My advise to us all, if you don't have a solution to the economic challenges, just shut up rather than criticize every solution presented.

The only reasonable comment so far

While I appreciate your intellectual angle as an economist I'll have to point out that the Keynesian approach will not work in Nigeria as it is presently constituted. A restructuring of Nigeria is needed where the LG government will be empowered to run effectively and efficiently. You don't take governance so far away from the people and expect development. Development is a collective process not only driven by the Government alone especially not by the FG and State governments!

I'll love to continue with this discourse in civility. Good morning.

You made a very powerful point my brother of which I so much appreciate. However I just feel we should start from somewhere to get ourselves out this economic quagmire in the shortest possible time. Restructuring is good but can we combine it with this proposal without running into problems? So that is why I feel it should be one step at a time.. .. If FG can pull this off then we can now move to the second stage of dissolving power as to ensure efficiency.

Thanks for this info, though not a student of economics, I had to go back and read from source because I knew it was very long you couldn't have possibly pasted everythig here.
Develeoped countries we all envy today applied this model or theory during the great depression of 1926-1939, during the second world war and during the post world war economic expansion which lasted till the 1970s and more recently during the global economic melt down of 07-08 espeicially USA and Europe.
Also a mentor whose books have impacted greatly on me as a lawyer cum business man was strongly against as it lead to creating floating money. Money not backed by assets or better still paper money and sometimes ends in borrowing again . And if you don't borrow or create equivalent asset to back up the paper money on the long run we might end up like Somali and Zimbabwe. Meaning the naira will become worthless.
On the issue of selling key government assets, such as the refineries , steel companies, etc, I am for it as this will make them more efficient and functional and will also create jobs. But my fear is this, the same old politicians might end up buying them on government arrangee basis and make a mess of them.
Lastly on the Executive Orders/fiat , I am not too down with it, considering Mr. President's aticident. He might abuse it and over abuse it to make people suffer the more or kinda introduce a subtle military regime with it , since this will enable him bypass the extant regulating laws and even the checks by the Legislative arm will be grately reduced. Giving his precedent as the king of the north I am quite concerned.
But it all, it's the major and one of the quickest ways to jump start the economy. Good ideal if there is sincerity of purpose.

@ the person I quoted, just wondering on a lighter note if I can be your mentee. Learnt some new stuffs from your post this morning as I was prompted to do more readings pursuant to your postulations and came across the word stagflation. Never heard of it before now in all honesty. I will be honoured to learn from you sir. Thanks a lot. God bless.

Am humbled my brother. We all want the best for our country. You are most welcome

can we just move away from this issue of 'late appointment ' of ministers and proffer solutions on how to get out of this economic gridlock?

Buhari needs such power due to exigencies of time.

The day Nigerians can put aside excessive primordial sentiments like ethnicity and religion will be the starting point of our greatness.
Here, we see a government ready to use desperate measures to tackle desperate times and here Nigerians are more concerned with ethnic bickering.
We are all aware of the cumbersome bureaucratic processes that hinder businesses and investments in Nigeria and I see a concerted effort by the govt to reduce this bottlenecks to allow investments and business thrive in this economic recession so we don't end up like Venezuela.

And how old were you? Were you a minister in Buhari's cabinet?

The point is you might not like the man and his policies. But this particular news is a way forward. Finding a way to fast track projects is not a bad thing. Helping states with money to develop education is not a bad thing. Most of those states can't pay their salaries and you expect them to come up with their 50% of the money. How will they do that.

When Buhari is wrong, I won't support him. But I see no sense in criticizing him even when he's right. I had to read the news again before posting this. I repeat this is a step in the right direction. And it's not he's forcing it down our treat. At least the house will decide if it's worth passing or not. Have a nice week ma'am.

What is this govt talking about, what did the executive do with the powers it already has? It took this govt a whole six months to give us a lack lustre cabinet, took longer to pass the budget and in between there were a lot of flippancy in govt policies that aggravated the problems on ground ,now it wants sweeping powers that looks to me like trying to usurp the powers of the legislature. What this govt should be doing is pushing for reforms in consonance with the national assembly not looking for emergency powers like we were in a war situation
Re: BREAKING NEWS: Buhari Seeks Emergency Powers To Tackle Economy by Caseless: 9:22am On Aug 22, 2016
clefstone:
You obviously don't understand what being the biggest economy means. America has the world's biggest economy but has a higher unemployment rate than Switzerland and the Scandinavia. Buhari is largely, if not solely responsible for Nigeria's current economic predicament. The idea of allowing a vacuum in govt for 6months after assumption of office and the delay in passing a budget are the single most important reasons why we find ourselves where we r today.

On the issue of fall in price of crude. Those monies you always say were wasted by PDP during the period of oil boom were in truth not really wasted. They were actually used to expand the economy, hence Nigeria's rise to become Africa's biggest economy. Now, when you have assets and potential like Nigeria has, it is easy to cushion the effect of a fall in oil price by simply borrowing or making use of such assets to stimulate the economy so as to keep businesses going without feeling the impact of oil price fall. Now those assets they plan to lease or sell, who built them? PDP. With which money? Same money you said was squandered.

can we just move from this issue of late appointment of ministers, since it has happened already, and proffer solutions out of the problem? You people blame the past or Buhari, don't want us to even blame the last administration .

Point to one asset PDP built that's sellable right now?

The president is reputed to be tyrannical hence empowering him as such will only aid that aspect. Already security agencies are disobeying court orders at will.... Ridiculous judgments abound.... The mere prospect of Buhari wielding additional power is scary.... Rather we need to devolve power to the grassroots to encourage a healthy competition among Nigeria's constituent elements...which will engender positive developments and a cessation of the current feeding bottle arrangement. Charlatans will think twice before running for public office... Democracy will be complemented by our community check and balances... As it is now our democracy is divorced from our local institutions and common men.... Most don't see how they fit in.
Restructuring will ensure you and I have and know our stakes in this country. Youths will know where to key in. I can go on and on.
