dollarlander: The "challenge" isn't about building another Forum software. There loads and loads of those available. The challenge is about getting people to use it. There are viable alternatives to big projects like Twitter and Instagram. But these aren't widely used, or rather are used by people who are "tired" of the commercialization (adverts) found on Twitter and IG. The real challenge is about being able to drive (and keep) traffic to the alternatives. That's were the real work is 4 Likes |

airsaylongcome: That shouldn't be an issue There are a lot of ways to drive genuine traffic to the site |
Re: Which Programming Language Was Used For Nairaland Server-side Scripting? by Paystack: 7:45pm On Jun 08, 2023 |
Failure2019: That's actually the issue. Getting organic traffic isn't easy Keeping the organic traffic you get overtime still isn't easy.. Getting paid traffic isn't cheap. 3 Likes |

Failure2019: It is actually brutally difficult to get traffic. There's a ton of forum software available. I'm even evaluating a few right now. But getting people to visit and stay on a new forum is very difficult. Even if you want to provide monetary incentives. 3 Likes |

Paystack: As long as the forum is interesting to be on Users will come Getting paid traffic flops sometimes |

Failure2019: Forum content comes from users. Users prefer forums that already have content. Organic content rather than content. That takes a lot of time. People also prefer mainstream. For example I'm almost certain you have never heard of Pixelfed or Mastodon as major alternatives to Instagram and Twitter. They contain very interesting and IMO more sound materials but most of Nigeria never goes there. Which is a good thing if you ask me |
Re: Which Programming Language Was Used For Nairaland Server-side Scripting? by Nobody: 4:57pm On Jun 09, 2023 |
airsaylongcome: Not everyone prefers main stream TF I'm on a Mastodon instance( fosstodon) been there since 2018 before it went viral Mastodon and pixelfed are for geeks and nerds only A normal person won't understand the fediverse or federated software I know a nigerian guy that has an instance on Mastodon There are nigerian peeps on Mastodon but not pixelfed |
Re: Which Programming Language Was Used For Nairaland Server-side Scripting? by airsaylongcome: 5:16pm On Jun 09, 2023 |
Failure2019: They are for geeks until they go mainstream. I remember joining Facebook in 2006 when it was mostly geeks and nerds on there. Went mainstream and boom! I’m on Pixelfed.social so that makes it at least on Naija person there lol. About understanding Federation and Fediverse, I’m sure people would be able to get their heads around it after sometime using it. For example I’m on lemmy.ml and I’m able to view communities outside my host instance. Heck I’m even beginning to see kbin instances that federate with lemmy.ml I love the idea of federation and the feddiverse |

dollarlander: I am interested in any and every Nigerian forum whether that is Nairaland or something that you or anyone else has to offer. Reddit is the biggest forum in the US but currently facing resistance from users not happy with Reddit. I’d be very interested in any forum that can compete for following from Nigerian forum users. I can mention some free, very high quality, forum software that you can have a look at 1 Like |

airsaylongcome: There are a lots of nigerian forums like Nairaland but the one only holding forum admin from publicising their forum are mostly hosting fees . I personally have a Usenet like forum was live in 2019 but took it down December 2019 because of AWS hosting fees If I see anyone that'll purchase some GPUs for me to host my forum site , I'll be glad |

Failure2019: Eeyah. But I think if this current administration can do something about exchange rate, it will encourage technology growth in this country. Imagine how popular your site might have been if not because of hosting fee. Very sorry bro. But which programming language did you use for the site? If I may ask. |

Failure2019: Bro, I'm really concerned about your inability to sustain your site. But I have this post on Nairaland, talking about federal government loans for 2023. I think it is an opportunity you can give a try. You may get loan there to sustain your site till the site is able to sustain itself. https://www.nairaland.com/7725940/list-federal-government-loans-2023 Thanks. |

dollarlander: Don't want to post links because of the spam bot. But there's Flarum (Flarum [dot] org) Discourse(discourse[.]org) Postmill (postmill [dot] xyz) Lemmy (lemmy [.] ml) kbin (kbin[.]pub) There are also classics like Simple Machine Forum (which was the original used for Nairaland) and PHPBB 1 Like |
