patches689: I knew the Mbombe 8 would turn out to be a better vehicle than the Patria SANDF went for. It's an impressive piece of engineering. I've been looking for videos of the Mbombe 8x8 during tests but none are available. The Mbombe already carries a more powerful gun in the 57mm, and it could also carry an all in one module like the BMPT terminator turret. 1 Like |

Henry240: I said they were similar, not better. Mbombe 8 has STANAG 4569 protection level 3+, which is only against 7.62. Badger has STANAG 4569 level 6 which is against 30mm (frontal arc). The 57mm gun is not standard and the BMPT turret only fits on the turret ring from a T72. Not to mention that the ZSU-57-2 is designed around the twin S-68 guns and can only hold 300 rounds - thus I doubt that the Mbombe 8 can have more than 50 or so rounds for it main gun. You then have to take into consideration differing optics, comms equipment, mine protection, etc. Denel, Patria and the SANDF have been working on the badger for allmost a decade. It would be naive to believe that the Mbombe would better suit the SANDF's needs based on face value assessments. Mbombe is a very similar vehicle, built very quickly but I seriously doubt it has the fine tuning of the Badger And lets not forget, badger fires the same ammunition as the Warthog pic: baby Rooivalk 3 Likes

Re: African Militaries/ Security Services Strictly Photos Only And Videos Thread by Nobody: 1:32pm On Sep 18, 2016 |
patches689: I'm saying it is better. I wasn't referring to what you were saying. The 57mm is standard for Kazhakstan. Let me rephrase what i meant on the Turret. I'm saying the Mbombe 8x8 can carry a Turret that fires both the 30mm, a Coaxial 7.6mm and an ATGM. All in one module. Do you need reading glasses? I made no mention of the SANDF. I'm saying the Mbombe is a better vehicle than the Patria. |
Re: African Militaries/ Security Services Strictly Photos Only And Videos Thread by MikeCZA: 1:34pm On Sep 18, 2016 |
Henry240:The Patria vehicle which the Badger is built upon is a great vehicle. At AAD the Mbombe 8 was demonstrated with a 30mm automatic turret. The Patria and Badger have: 120mm mortar, 60mm mortars, 105mm gun, 30mm guns,100mm gun, 40mm gun etc intergrated and tested on the vehicle. My favourite being the 120mm Nemo mortar turret. Note: The Mbombe 8 will have better marketing videos. As Denel still has to complete contracts with sub suppliers to complete have a price and market the Badger. There's still another IFV in the Denel RG-41 IFV which has a high payload 10 tonnes.

Henry240:The local remote turret? The fact the Badger doesn't have a turret which fire those weapons in because of our doctrine. The missile variant turret sold to Malaysia has the Denel emak 30mm gun, the Ingwe missile and SS77. 1 Like |

Re: African Militaries/ Security Services Strictly Photos Only And Videos Thread by andrewza: 2:12pm On Sep 18, 2016 |
Henry240: there is nothing stopping the SANDF using the same layout used by Malaysia where the turret as the 30mm, coaxel mg and Ingwene ATGMs. All so the TRT can fit just about any platform. The badger is still the better product with vastly better armour and ergonomics and bush upgrades tailored for the SANDF. 1 Like |

frumentius: CSIR had a soldier fulled kitted out in all the latest special forces gear right next to that vehicle demonstrator, there was no one around to ask. It seemed like something a Recce would wear, but i have never seen one kitted like that! Looked like SAS or Delta i.e very westernised and fancy |

Henry240: "Hunter-Killer" ops while the gunner is engaging a target the commander is searching for the next. The Mbombe 8 will change a bit as customer feed back is taken. Was surprised you are saying a prototype is already better than a vehicle which has undergone testing. |

MikeCZA: The Mbombe 8 with such stats is already a better product. It would only get better with customer feed-back, hence my conviction. I wonder how much it costs? |

gees9: You'll find that the Recces utilise kit for specific missions. BTW, there's a specific division at CSIR, Technology for Special Operations (TSO), dedicated towards servicing the needs of SASFB, STF of the SAPS, the Pathfinders, the MRS and the CAT of the PPU. 2 Likes
