Does anyone know what the Pop is made of, and why is it impossible to have a Pop manufacturing plant in Nigeria. This is one area Dangote can explore if he wants to expand his empire.

Pop is made of calcium sulfate (gypsum). We have abundance of it in nigeria.
I was just discussing with someone today and he said there is abundant availability of it in the north.
There is sufficient quantity in ogun state also and it's used in part of cement production there to control setting time.
Dangote uses it as additive in cement and it's gotten on his ibeshe plant. I washed the demonstration documentary when they opened the plant.
I've thought about it and even discussed it with my big brother on nairaland when he was enquiring about chemical import ideas with me.
The production is fairly straightforward but the energy and invariably the production cost may deter investors.
The gypsum exists in hydrated form and it's heated to a temperature to partially drive of the water of hydration and ground to powder.
When it gets in contact with water again, it's rehydrate back to the original form it was and thicken as a result. So the water used in pop actually remains in it even in the hard state. The excess water dries out but it's very hard already even before the excess water dries.
So basically, the natural state it exists in nature even in nigeria is the form it exists in your pop ceiling. It's just heated to partially dry off the hydration water and ground (recycled).
That's why it has fire retardant property. When in contact with flame, it releases steam that reduces surface temperature and slows spread of fire.

Engineer Agba !! grin grin

I hail o

I have some curious questions

# what is the diameter of the bores for this fence and what is the depth below natural ground level.
# I can see this area is water logged, is it Lekki and if so which area there ?
# If you continue to drill the bore, will you not hit water table and if so what will you do if that happens ?
# If you were to hit water table, will cement mix just not be dissolving inside it ?
# Is there any concept of sheet piling in Nigeria ?
# Lets say you have your bores 3M apart, to save cost can a short beam be done and then you chain it and then blocks set ?
# If the above cannot be done for technical reasons, does it now mean that we are back to concrete beams in between bore piles, sets say 4 board ?
# Is it beneficial to have an inverted T beam between bore piles if using piling ?

I know its a lot of questions, but please remember you have a lot of students oo Engineer Agba.

#300mm with 4m depths (short bore pile)
#Yeah. Lekki, Ologolo area (Kenny site grin)
#Basically, there is something we call safe bearing capacity underneath the soil. Which need to be determined in d process of soil test.In fact, that's the essence of d soil test. So It is expected to bore below water table ,clay etc to reach good sharp sand which we may refer to as safe bearing capacity.
#That is d essence of using sack and even chemical where necessary
#Sheet pilling? I no no that one o cry. Do u mean case pilling?
#Absolutely. Na so we wan do am
#U don't need inverted beam having pile.... Just beam to chain d pile

Why would one build in such environment beats me. With due apologies to Hajj M: I don't just get it ! All I can say is this is just a classic case of herd mentality: Herd mentality describes how people are influenced by their peers to adopt certain behaviors. Examples of the herd mentality include stock market trends, home décor (property/land purchase) etc. That is making decisions based upon the actions of others, it is a widely held view that humans flock like sheep and birds, subconsciously following a minority of individuals. Research shows it takes a minority of just five per cent to influence a crowd’s direction – and that the other 95 per cent follow without realizing it. Fela called it Follow Follow mentality (Zombie). This explains why one will buy Atlantic Ocean for land just because it is Lekki......wanting to belong. I don't get it !

Thanks Mr Lastpage for the response, have asked some agents about it and all of them are claiming ignorance because they know no more agency fees and all that.
The site is even showing less than 100permits have been completed so far which means many people are not aware.

Online is the way to go wish they can do same for applying for c of o, governors consent etc without using all those fake agents and lawyer

Besides, how about Eko Atlantic and Banana Island. All those people cannot be stupid na. They spend thier money on whatever they like, so no need to criticize them for thier choice. We all have choices and preferences, and just because others do not follow our choices, no need to harshly criticize.

My esteemed Oga!
I was discussing with an automobile and marine industrial paint manufacturer just yesterday about the persistent rise in dollars and imported materials. The man said the gypsum export is the major forex earner for Tunisia. Most of the gypsum imported into the country us from Tunisia.
The man said there is over abundance of the gypsum in the north and was cursing the crude oil that has made us lazy.
I dare say the solid mineral present in the country can earn us more money than the crude oil but our political leaders are used to free oil money.
Many of these minerals are already being mined illegally and exported. Someone told me some Chinese export some woods back to their country weekly in containers and they are cut at arm size. We just both laughed over it and concluded it's no ordinary wood but as we don't know the value, we couldn't do anything. Perhaps it's the type ideal for toothpick or matchstick.
The oyinbos barely scratched the surface of the minerals we have due to the limited technology they had when they colonized us and stole our resources.
This country is the perfect definition of irony. Lacking in the midst of plenty.
We just want easy business. Only the foreigners invest money prospecting and targeting profit on the long term.
Your comment may just be the solution with licence given to a foreign firm and they should be taxed heavily or have a public private partnership with equal stake with the state government.

I salute you.
Whilst I share your views, let us look at it from another angle.

# Oil money is easy compared to other source of mass wealth, the infrastructure is already on ground, just switch on the pumps and the dollars will be flowing in.
# Various cartels exist and you will upset them if you turn off thier oil money.
# Few foreign companies would want to setup shop in Nigeria, especially European and American ones. Why ? Corruption and the fact that few things work.
# To get anything done, you need to give brown envelopes and kick backs. Most countries, at least I know UK and USA have like anti bribery laws, such that any of thier companies should get caught bribing Nigerian officials, if caught they can get heavily fined and jail terms. The Chinese spring to mind, they operate like this, dont ask, dont tell. Let us do what we want to do, and we will make sure all deals are secret. This is the reason why you see a lot of south Asian countries and the Chinese primarily operating in Nigeria, look at construction, engineering, importation and car/franchise dealerships and i am sure many more.

Let me ask you a question and to others as well, Would you have preferred if Nigeria was under colonial/apartheid rule (like South Africa before they were set free) for another 30 years after 1960 or you prefer it like this the status quo (independence 1st October 1960)?

Apologies to anyone that finds this offensive, but I would prefer it if the colonial masters still rule us till now. In fact if it's possible for them to rule us on request based on referendum, I would be delighted cheesy.
The presence of the whites presently in south africa is the reason they are still making progress. I don't think the blacks contribute much to their development asides from being in government.

Safe to say that referendum is least LIKELY to happen. Just imagine how it would sound to our neighboring African brothers and sisters. Would you favour a system where we are ruled by technocrats only, not really the Chinese model but something like the communist party of technocrats? or what they tried to do with the TCN (Transmission Company of Nigeria) by bringing in foreign management consultants to manage its affairs and make decisions.

As long as the foreign technocrats are given free hand to operate which I doubt is possible.
Perhaps too much diversity in tribe and religion is our problem.
Successful European countries are nations with similar race and religion so they only choose leaders based on merit. Same could be said to be the reason for the relative success experienced under the regional government in nigeria.

Ijoba AWOLOWO !
That would not happen now o, I doubt it sha. When I have discussed this during beer parlour talk of the country splitting by the river Niger and Benue lines. Everybody seems to think the hausa's would be worse off, but I do not believe that. They have abundance of untapped resources and fertile ground, you saw what happened with the tomato fiasco. And you also know the SS people will say they are not Igbos

If they (Hausas) stop doing BankaDEDE, they will not be worse off. I also hear oil exists within the Chad basin, may not be in commercial quantities to warrant exploration activities. I read the Northern governors have contracted a British firm to search for Oil in the North. grin

Colonialism us a crime against humanity and one the most absurd concept used by so called WHITE to steal and kill most third world nation.

White don't developed the indigenous population, they dominate, exclude and marginalized host community wherever they settled. Look at the native American in the state, look at black South Africans in South Africa, look at aborigines in Australia, look at native Canadian etc. The so called WHITE create all these mess all over the world.

Our biggest problem is the type and quality of education we inherited from the so called white, they rule us for more than 60years and leave us in a serious mess, with no infrastructure, an artificial nation build on divide and rule etc.

Black or dark skin people are also capable of building a great nation if left alone, we can build our roads, electricity, factory etc if allowed to live in peace.

South Africa is in trouble because of apartheid which discriminated against native.
How would you feel if you are not allowed to attend the University just because you are Black/dark skin?
How would you feel when you are systematically camped in a getto, all your ancestorer land taking away from you because you are black?

South Africa black are one of the poorest group in South Africa because of white injustice.

I will take up arm to fight any white or Chinese invader that want to take over my country

Northern Nigeria will be worse off simply because they lack access to the sea.

The oil in Chad basin is of low economic value because of the quantity.
Do you know that Republic of Chad is an oil producing nation, they get about US200m from oil per annum, yet one of the poorest country on earth.

Oil, gypsum, iron ore don't necessarily developed a nation. A country human resources does. A nation developed when her human resources is equipped, serious and determine to developed.

Nigeria and all other Africa state are nation of confused people. People who will rather spend 100billion Naira on pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia than invest in small scale manufacturering, mining or commercial agriculture.

We have religion, an imported ideology from the west and arab to occupy our mind with.

So many eastern European nation are poor, Infact majority of the world population leave in abject poverty. Prosperity is not a European thing

South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan and other East Asians nation has proved to us that it is possible to developed a great nation comparable to the west Europe or North America when the citizen are focus, ready and willing to sacrifice.

We are to blame for Nigeria under development and any foreign film or European expertriate is interested in taking from us.
