you should have asked ,does nigeria use helicopters to carry out air assault ,i believe most of your defence forces consider choppers to be treasured assets .to expose them to such threat(behind enemy line),they would rather use them in liaison and utility

I would have preferred the AW 101 to be transfered to the navy, for the NNS centinery/unity not the Airforce

The weight of the helicopter would tear both NNS Centenary and Unity into two. A Puma helicopter would even be heavy for both the Centenary and Unity.

AW-109s and Dauphin helicopters are the class the Unity can carry.

Off-course we do. There was a documentary released in 2014 or so by the Army. The documentary containing NAFs first Drone strike, in that video, we could see NAF MI-17s dropping troops off in battle.

In all militaries, helicopters are considered as treasured assets. However helicopters are routinely used in clandestine roles.

air mobility is a useful tactic when employed where mobility is hindered by terrain ,also where the need for surprise is essential to gain a upper hand against an enemy .

The executive helicopters are designed for VIP transportation and are equipped with ballistic defence capabilities and defensive aid suites.

The CAS, in his acceptance speech, stated that the NAF has contacted the manufacturer of the helicopter and plans have been put in place to reconfigure one of the helicopters as air ambulance, and the other as a troop carrier.

Kenya: KDF Takes Pride of Place Among Africa's Militaries

In a conversation with US diplomats which was leaked by anti-secrecy organisation WikiLeaks, Mr Yoweri Museveni, Uganda's President, was among the world leaders who questioned the capacity of the Kenya Defence Forces.

He termed it a "career army" that could not be relied upon to fight Al-Shabaab.

Such remarks came from a host of world leaders, politicians and military strategists and the international press that other than dismissing Kenya's reasons for going to war also added that "Kenyan troops were only good for marching during parades".

"(The case for war is less than convincing) as it is difficult to argue that the threat from Al-Shabaab is substantially worse than it has been in years past," the Foreign Affairs magazine reported, adding: "Kenyan troops have armed, trained, and organised proxy forces to fight Al-Shabaab on the border since at least 2009, albeit to no great effect."

The magazine further argued: "Since independence in 1963, Kenyan soldiers have been largely content to collect comfortable salaries in return for their non-involvement in politics."

Al Jazeera news channel termed the incursion "Kenya's blundering mission in Somalia".

Five years down the line, KDF has proved its detractors wrong and is now one of the most respected militaries in Africa.

In May, Kenya's was ranked as the 11th most powerful military in Africa by the Global Firepower, an agency that assesses military strength of nations.

During the time of cross-border insurgency in South Africa, both the Mozambican and Zimbabwean border were made very high on the South African side and then electrified (for hundreds of kilometers). At some point Eland 90s and Ratels would be seen patrolling on the Mozambican/SA border as a security statement to scare off any potential danger either posed by insurgents or their state allies.

Most African countries (with an exception of a few) don't have enough helicopters to drop a battalion-size infantry into action. Those who do, have not demonstrated that capacity in recent years. The only times this happened on African soil was when the SADF 32 Battalion would be dropped into battles in Angola and would be quickly extracted back to Namibia within hours. ... As for now, it's just tactical insertions.
