I have come to understand some people from Delta, Isoko, Urhobo...people from Kogi and Akwaibom share alot with the Igbo people>>THere is every tendency that 97% of them are igbo in maybe last 3 generations before now... Looking at them closely u call them igbo only for them to prove you wrong with their language.

I personally have been studying people now at my place of business, inshort whenever i come across people almost every day, i do ask them where they are from, but looking at the Igalas and URbobos and issokos, i tend to believe they are igbos until intentionally speaks igbo to them. it marvels that by facial identification they are 100% igbo but something just got wrong when it comes to language...

Alot happened after the Biafran war, alot, something tells me most of this confusion started when the NIgerian army terminated most of igbos from their ancestral ground thereby allowing close regions to claim this Lands.

How do you differentiate between the the upland Igala's and and their southern brothers.
bigfrancis21:

Ya the Igala conquest occurred around the mid to late 1800s. From histories I have read, I have often wondered the penchant for Igboland the Igalas and Binis had. In the past you read of many Igalas heading towards Igboland to settle for many reasons. There seems to be a general fondness for Igboland ancient Igalas had, and which may explain why many of them left their hometowns and headed southwards and later settled.

I saw this still express itself when my Igala roommate back in my first year in 2008, who was very bitter against Igbos, told me that very soon they would conquer Nsukka land again. grin

The guy is pure Igala anyway, from his looks, most likely upland Igala.

you sound very uneducated. The very problems with many igbo's is their pride, arrogance, hate and attitude to look down on other ethnicity.

In different ways, mostly from physical features, religion and way of life. Among the Igalas, the Ibajis, who have significant Igbo ancestry, tend to be the most educated and Christians compared to upland Igalas who are more Islamized. The Igbos don't joke with education and Christianity as you probably know. Physically, southern Igalas and Igbos tend to look alike compared to upland Igalas vs Igbo. You can immediately tell an upland Igala when you see one. They tend to look more dark-skinned in complexion and with facial marks compared to southern Igalas. These are my observation. There could be more.

This is very informational. Thanks for this.

To also mention that the Igalas use the 4 native Igbo market days of Eke, Oye, Afor and Nkwo which are Eke, Ede, Afo and Ukwo in Igala.

There isn't much to say.

'Ama' is simply not an indication of Aro presence. I come from a quarter in Awka that is 'Ama'-something and has nothing to do with the Aro.

Amaigbo is traditionally seen as the oldest community among the Isuama group. It has nothing to do with the Aro.

You need anyone to spell it out to you that they are both the same except for 'ede' which is a corruption of 'oye' or 'orie'?

In the study of history you'll need to approach it with a more objective mind set. You can't pick and choose what you want to believe.

You both sound very funny, trying very hard to show how educated igbo race are. But in truth the ratio of educated to the total population is very poor, slightly above the Hausa's in northern Nigerian if only you'd travelled around their five states.
I can't change the fact that they is a slight similarities between igbo's and Igala's due to inter-marriages, migration.

Ya. It is often said that the way of life of southern Igalas are similar to Igbos compared to upland Igalas.

But WAEC and JAMB statistics from the last 6 years say otherwise. Even at primary school level entrance examinations, SE states have the highest cutoffs in Nigeria.

I noticed you could not raise any objective counter to any of my points, rather choosing to throw a feeble punch at Igbos. wink

Well, understand that politics and history are two different things. If ibaji people do not want Biafra (politics), it doesn't deny their Igbo influence or ancestry (history). Many Igbos in SE do not support Biafra. That doesn't mean they are not Igbos. Support for or against Biafra is not a cogent yardstick to measure Igboness or not. After all, the original map of Biafra as of 1967 included many non-Igbo tribes ssuch as Efik/Ibibio, Ijaw, Ogoni etc.

let me state that igala land has been reduced to a small state the igalas have once conquered more than half of present day igbo land ,there are many igala speaking tribes in igbo land from delta to anambra and so on

Igbo have suffered.

How can someone wake up and type this type of rubbish?
Igala influence stopped at Northern Anambra, Northern Enugu and Ebu in Delta North.

And they were well checkmated by Nsukkas in Enugu North border.
How exactly the above scenario translates to conquering half of present Igboland is a product of your delusions.
Igala speaking people that invaded towns in Northern tips of Anambra and Enugu are rapidly being assimilated into Igbo culture and Igbo language. it's not like they have any option.

ISLAM IN ENUGU-EZIKE

"According to Eze. O, Islam was brought to Enugu Ezike through a Nupe Muslim trader, Ibrahim Adukwu who came down from his hometown, Bida with his mother and siblings and settled at Umuogodo, Amufie.

He was described by C.K. Meek as an ambitious and powerful Nupe man. He was said to have acquired Quaranic education under a Mallam versed in Arabic language back home in Bida in the present Niger State of Nigeria.

Ibrahim Adukwu was used by the British in the administration of Nsukka area hence his appointment as a Warrant Chief. This appointment helped in deepening and expanding the frontiers of Islam in Enugu-Ezike. In 1918, when the Native Court of Enugu-Ezike was formed, Adukwu was a principal member. His towering personality not only dragged his 120 servants to Islam but was also a source of assurances and guarantees to many more Muslim immigrants.

The unmitigated spread of Islam in Enugu-Ezike was, however, checkmated by the presence of Christian missionaries who established schools. Such schools became centres for religious instructions.

Ibrahim Adukwu is remembered for the introduction of St Luke’s Anglican school in Amufie in 1931 not minding that he was a Muslim. It could, however, be because some of his sons needed western education which only the missionaries were the gateway. Some of the sons took Christian names to actualize their dreams of acquiring western education. His sons dominated the public positions open to Africans in the Enugu-Ezike Native Authority Areas. They included Johnson Bawala C. Adukwu, William Momoh Adukwu, Alfred Abubukar Adukwu and Richard Audu Adukwu.

It must be noted that in the long run, his romance with Mission school brought the dwindling fortunes of Islam in Enugu-Ezike where it has continued to play a second fiddle to Christianity. The mission schools provided western education which presented high prospects for the leaders of tomorrow as against Quaranic education which is more on Arabic literacy.

It is equally noteworthy that the first female graduate from Enugu Ezike in the person of Stella Nkem Adukwu of Amufie came from Ibrahim Adukwu’s family. She graduated in 1978. The second and third positions went to Benedette Eze of Imufu and Bridget Mayiri Iyida of Olido respectively. Benedette graduated in 1979 and Mayiri in 1981. The three of them came from the Umuitodo clan of Enugu-Ezike.

In the male category, the first was Johnson Eze from Amachalla. He graduated in 1962. Nduka Eya from Amufie came second while the third position went to Gabriel Ugwuanyi of Olido. He graduated in 1965. The three are also from the Umuitodo clan of Enugu-Ezike where Ibrahim Adukwu had the greatest influence".

That's my point, ede and oye are spelled and pronounced differently. I don't know why that is hard for you to understand. Igala as a language has a lot of similarities with Idoma, itsekiri, and Yoruba(Iyaji) as they are popularly called in igalaland. The fact that most words in igala are almost the same with Yoruba, like counting of 123 or come and eat and so on speak volumes of tolerance and accommodation of the igala ethnic group. More so, in your previous comments, the upland Igala's doesn't share any ancestral lineage therefore, they shouldn't be any igbo's words in their language but the say market name Is the all over igalaland. In my conclusion, the mentioned market name is an igala name borrowed by the igbo speaking speaking people of Nigeria.

With the kind of inferiority complex these Igbo border communities exhibit. I am sure that if this Nupe general, Adukwu invaded Enugwu Ezike a century before the colonials came with written records.

Adukwu would have formed a kingdom out of Enugwu Ezike and infused many Nupe words for governance in the monarchy stool.
And Enugu Ezike oral story will now be telling us how Ezike people were Nupes who became Igbos with no trace of Nupe language whatsoever remaining today. That their founding father, Adukwu was a Nupe Prince who migrated with their people to their present abode.
When the truth is that he was an invader who met an already Igbo speaking Enugu Ezike people on ground.

Even at that, Enugwu Ezike is still running and trying to claim Bini origin. When it is well known that Enugwu Ezike migrated from Enugwu Ukwu.

This inferiority complex and need to attach to non Igbo origin by Igbo speaking groups is becoming embarrassing.

Despite the differences between oye and ede, the 3 other market days are basically the same. Indicating an Nri Igbo influence on the Igalas. In the past, Nri priests performed religious roles and were well-known travellers. They were often called on or present during the coronation of many non-Igbo kings and chiefs. The binis and Idomas also use the 4 native Igbo market days.

Yes, no doubt, Igala and Yoruba share words in common and numeral systems but Igala scholars say that it is a different language of its own, being a sister language to Yoruba that both got split at ssome point in history. However, observing the alphabet system of Igala, it has letters which are absent in Yoruba but present in Igbo such as 'ch', 'gw', 'kp', 'kw' etc. indicating a possible Igbo influence on Igala as a whole. When written, Igala may resemble Igbo more. Then you have southern Igala land that received many Igbo ancestors and the dialect that has Igbo influence. At best, Igala shares similarities between Yoruba and Igbo.
