BritneyStacy: God bless you for bringing up this topic. Soymilk is a cow milk substitute. The truth is any cow milk substitute must be strongly recommended by a doctor before giving it to a baby or any child under one. A doctor will only recommend it after assessing the child to determine if the child is allergic to cow milk or if the child has any other dietary needs. Doctor's recommended soymilk is the type made by reputable babyfood companies and not the type sourced/made/processed locally like pap. I have always known about the caveat with soymilk/soya beans but I have learnt on this thread that people take major offence when you point out/question the benefits or otherwise of "traditional" baby food so now I keep my opinion to myself. I remember being dragged by the weave by some mums here for having the effrontery to say that pap (Ogi) contains no nutritional value and that it's nothing but carbs. Yet, detailed scientific tests carried out by researchers from one of the reputable universities in nigeria, university of nnsukka (UNN) confirmed my stand on pap. Onegai even posted the link a while back detailing the research and she also stated that there is a great amount of work required to nutritionally fortify pap to acceptable levels using other food items and she personally felt that it just wasn't worth the hassle. I doubt if many mums actually took out time to read the link. Information they say is power. This is the link below for those that are interested. http://archive.unu.edu/unupress/food/V191e/ch06.htm 7 Likes 1 Share

mumsgirl27: Typically the Drs say it'll straighten out as she grows but I'd suggest you add cod liver oil to her regimen. It's particularly helpful for growing bones and strengthens the bones. You may also want is assessed by a dr to be sure it's not the chronic type that will need medical intervention |

helovesme: Babe!!! I just feel somewhat compelled to respond because I recall I in particular "harassed" you on the ogi matter! I didn't realize you didn't quite like it and I apologize. I sincerely was trying to be light hearted at the time. I am pro ogi even till now and would understand if anyone else doesn't like it for their children. So friends as usual? Was going to share a funny story with you but only after you respond to this comment! 6 Likes |

helovesme: Britneystacey! My capo...... Interesting discourse you've started up here. Sometimes all these knowledge just leaves one a bit confused as to what options to explore for our children. For all we care the estrogen levels in soya may be so minute it actually doesn't affect make children except that's the only meal they eat day in day out! But who wants to take the risk I was given soya as a child because I was allergic to cow's milk at the time. It was unpleasant tasting as far as I remember so I didn't intend to give my child and then this research comes up Na wa! 1 Like |

babythug: No-one said Ogi/Pap was bad, I think the idea was that, if you are going to give Pap, either put in a lot of work to make it nutritious (that study says even pap and groundnut isn't nutritious enough) or give other healthy meals. One of my siblings call Pap and Indomie "food of death". They laugh privately when they hear parents say "Indomie is endorsed by the Nutrition Society of Nigeria and I add egg and veggies to it". But they don't tell their patients because they don't like arguing. When my paeds met me, one didn't send me and the other was like "sure you can give your baby blah blah". When they found out they were colleagues of my siblings, they changed to "why are you focusing on giving multivitamin when you should be focusing on fruits and veggies, and you better not give Indomie, give whole wheat Spaghetti with veggies and regular spaghetti if you want her to be fat". I'm pretty sure their public and private opinions about Soymilk will follow the same route. No-one recommends soymilk over cowmilk in general but I read differently on NL. But it's every parent's choice at the end of the day. 3 Likes 2 Shares |

With this new discovery on soy milk I guess we should make do with groundnut and other legumes. However, I suggest we introduce in little quantity per day to our babies and watch out for allergies, diarrhea, etc. My opinion though. God will continue to increase us in wisdom on how best to take care of our babies. 4 Likes |

babythug: Chai. We are friends na. After all we follow each other At the end of the day, we all disagree to agree and even with all our disagreements and banter, we all learn one or two things and pick up valuable points. The good thing is that the "ogi harassment" made you more active on this thread which is a very good thing as you've helped many people here. Oya, what's the story. I'm all ears. 4 Likes |

mumsgirl27: Take her to a doctor, find out if it's a serious condition (some require surgery) and if it isn't, focus on her diet changing more than convenient multivitamins. There is a lot going on in multivitamins research and a lot of paeditricians don't recommend it for their own children unnecessarily but will let yours swallow it easily. Because the parent insist on it. There are foods rich in Calcium and Vitamin D available cheaply everywhere, do your research. I'm saying that as a parent whose child doesn't drink milk and stopped since 5 months plus by herself, who has excellent bone density (no matter how many derring-do jumps she performs from the centre table, her legs are strong enough to kick painfully at night). Anyhoo, choice is yours 1 Like 1 Share |

helovesme: Some lady on a forum I belong to was sharing how she caught her daughter who was born and has lived all her toddler life in the abroad (not sure which of the abroads sha) in their pantry aka store drinking of all things GARRI lol She said she couldn't understand the gusto with which he girl was guzzling down the thing! Her only explanation/ conclusion was that it's the naija blood in the girl making her do such. I actually imagined you catching your son doing such or worse still drinking pap with gusto on maybe a visit to naija!!!! Just picturing your face and possible shock 6 Likes |

Hi mamas, so with all this talk on pap and it's siblings, step siblings and all. When can one add the groundnut? Is it before or after grinding the corn? Also, is the groundnut suppose to be fried or added raw? What are the alternative locally prepared food for babies 4 months and above? Plenty question abi? Don't mind me abeg. |

mumsgirl27: In addition to what other mamas suggested, you can also add complan milk to her diet,i also experienced this with my dd...i gave her cod liver oil and complan milk for a yr+ but if you see her now you can never know she once had a bow leg.....i can testify to this. God will help us all to take good care of these little ones. 5 Likes 2 Shares |

sugarcanebaby: Those two vaccines are vital. Please ensure your son takes both. I have attached two screenshots that explains the importance of these two vaccines. I have no idea how much they cost though. Another mum might be able to help with that. I do not understand why these vaccines are not free in government hospitals. 3 Likes

rofemiguwa: In addition to milk (milk is important for the 1st one year), there are plenty of hassle free, affordable, highly nutritious home made meals you can give your baby. All you have to do is have them puréed and you get the same ogi consistency. Sweet potatoes, Irish potatoes, carrots, green peas, runner beans, sweet corn, chicken, fish, beef, sweet peppers, avocado, banana, broccoli, Apple, cauliflower, cabbage, spinach (although I introduced this around 12months), etc. For example, this is a very simple recipe: boil Irish potatoes (a good source of potassium, copper, vitamin C, manganese, phosphorus, niacin, dietary fiber, and pantothenic acid) and chicken breast or any boneless chicken (very high in protein, vitamins B, B6, B12, C, D, E, niacin, and magnesium). Let it cool and toss in your blender. Blend it till it's smooth with no lumps. Add water in bits till you get the required consistency. Add a little sunflower oil. Feed your baby and keep the rest in your fridge or freezer. 4 Likes 8 Shares |

sugarcanebaby: Pcv is now free at gov't hospitals. Rota is not, I believe I paid 7,500 at a gov't hospital in Abuja. Helovesme has highlighted usefulness of the vaccines. PCV is for pneumonia, rota is for diarrhea. Private hospitals are less stressful for immunisation, but beware of price. For our six weeks immunisation we spent about 36k at a private hospital. The same shots cost I think 12k at gov't health centre. |

ngsoundz It's hard to really offer a solution since you are exclusively breastfeeding. If you were not, increasing his water intake would have been the first option and then seeing your doctor if there are still reported dry nappies. Just to be double sure he's not having regular wee, why not leave him without a diaper (just clothes on), see if he wets himself and then change him. You can also note down the time/number of changes you've made to see how many times he wees in 24 hours. You can then pass on the result of the 'no diaper' experiment to your doctor and hear he says. 1 Like |
