China now owns more than half of your national debt.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_external_debt

This is the list total estimate debts owed to creditors by individual nations. The debt Kenya owes China is directly injected into the massice infrastructure boom witnessed in Africa ever. The multiple projects that China is constructing will directly impact in the projected economy growing by over 12% per. Despite the big oil reserves Nigeria suffers a huge national debt that seems to end up in benefiting only a small percentage of the Nigerians.

NIGERIA DEFENSE

Don't believe any statistics from Nigeria; just follow the money; For example Nigeria's Defence budget is mere 0.9B usd (290B Naira). That is really minuscule and that is why their military is one big joke who cannot beat Boko haram all these years without asking for USA help and can't rescue those poor girls.Kenya defence budget is definitely more than 1B USD. Way bigger than Nigeria's. Including the police force...the budget last I checked for Kenya was 2.5B Usd. Kenya police may be the worst..but wait till you see Nigeria police with really cheap looking uniforms.

Kenya defence budget -Sh124 billion(1.25B USD)
Nigeria defence budget -shs 290B Naira (0.9B USD)

Kenya Police & NSIS (Intelligence budget) - 140B (1.4BUSD)
Nigeria -?

Total defence & police budget in kenya is close to 3B usd - and in 2yrs it's projected to be more than 5B USD - or in Naira -1.5 trillion smiley smiley

Looking at the entry salary for Nigeria soldier - they would earn 15,000ksh (150 usd per month) - just about the minimum salary in Kenya - while a kenya soilder at entry level would be earning nearly 3 times that!!!!!!!!!! Naija major earns less than 1,000usd...a kenya is making 4,000usd. That is problem of trying to sustain a 100,000 military with less than 1B usd budget. Kenya's learner force of 20,000 is definitely more lethal, more professional and well remunerated - and you never find them overthrowing a joke of gov with 500B USD gdP - but that pays salary a watch guard in kenya armed with baton is not paid. Nigeria army must be the most disgruntled lot. Where is all that oil money going to??

And that is using official USD exchange rate - the black market rate would make it worse - Kenya currency is free floating and so stable - there is NO forex control. You can buy dollars or any currency in this world anytime anyday. Kshs took a beating from high of 63 to 100shs to a dollar..but nothing compared to the whooping Naira got.

Kenya should aspire to reach where South Africa is..not Nigeria. And I think if Kenya grow in the next 10yrs like it has done the last 10yrs - it will be at same level of South Africa. Nigeria is so messed up I don't know how it can even start. Federal budget that small for an economy that "big". Kenya with it 70B economy is going to collect 14B from taxes and another 3B from A-I-A - meaning total of 15B USD - and then it will borrow another 10B - making budget of nearly 25B. And that is excluding the counties (near equivalent to Nigeria's state) collections from business licenses, land rates and suchs

Even without any boom we are currently better in Aviation sector. There is nothing special or sweet about all he wrote. The local players in our aviation industry says a lot.
If individuals can start building airport and seaport and we have over 20 domestic airlines am sure the difference is clear.

NIGERIAS POOR AVIATION SAFETY RECORD
AVIATION: Nigeria's record of 'systemic failure' — FT.com

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nigeria_Airways

Nigeria Airways Ltd., more commonly known as Nigeria Airways, was a Nigerian airline.
Plagued by mis-management, corruption, and overstaffing, at the time of closure the airline had debts of more than US$60,000,000 (equivalent to $77,311,867 in 2015), a poor safety record, and its operative fleet comprised a single aircraft flying domestic routes as well as two leased aircraft operating the international network. It was succeeded by Virgin Nigeria. At the time of dissolution, the company's headquarters were at Airways House, located in Abuja.

Nick Fadugba, publisher of one of the world’s most authoritative aviation magazine. Asked on why has the aviation industry in Nigeria in general been backward? He said the most pressing issue facing the Nigerian aviation industry today is safety. We lag far behind the rest of the world in aviation safety; efforts are being made by African governments and aviation bodies to enhance safety on the African continent, but the fact is that we still lag far behind. I am pleased, however, that following the conference in Abuja recently, African countries, including the African Union, committed themselves to improving aviation safety.

I wish Nigerians could use that GDP to feed, house and clothes themselves. How can 500B Usd economy have such a small budget? That is what matters in an economy. Not figures cooked by Nigeria Statistics Office.

Hehe, interesting attacks from my Nigerian brodas. Understating something to deem it smaller than what you have is quite weak.

The Kenyan SGR is her largest project u/C currently. Phase 1, which is 480km long (with 609kms of tracks) is 90% complete, phase 2 is 5% through with the entire project having 1300km of tracks from Mombasa to Malaba, 1185km from malaba into Kampala with 4 branches in the country and lastly 350km through Rwanda, the final destination.

Currently, the LAPPSET project currently u/c with a total cost of $23bn isn't said to be Kenya's largest since it has many individual project components. And here's it's components and progress so far :-

Lamu Port with 32 berths ($3.095bn)- construction of first 3 berths underway
1700km Highway ($1.398bn) - 800km complete
1710km Railway ($7.099bn)- 0km complete
3 intn'l airports ($0.506bn)- 3 airports complete
2240km Crude oil pipeline ($3.949bn)- Tender awarded to Japanese firm
120,000bpd refinery ($2.8bn) - nothing done.
3 resort cities ($1.21bn)- 2 u/c (Isiolo and Lamu)
1 dam (high grand falls) ($2.11bn)- don't really know anything here.
Associated electricity supply infrastructure ($2.5bn)- power lines and station to mostly complete.

Nigeria, DRC Congo and Ethiopia are armpits and cesspit of Africa. Ghana, Kenya,Senegal and Ivory coast - and all southern africa countries (sans Zim & Mozambique) - plus island like Mauritus - are few bright sparks in Sub-Saharan Africa. Ethiopia at least is getting her act together after many wasted decades.

Nigeria and Congo are the same. Incredibly blessed with natural resources/people but doing very little with them. Just like their cousins overseas in America - US & those islands like Jamaica. Totally messed up countries.

What is the need of having "big" airports that are inefficient and extremely inhospitable.

Here is an experts opinion on such airports

5 Worst Airports in Africa 2015

If you are thinking of travel that requires a stopover at one of the following airports, you may want to think again and rather pay good money to stay at a hotel. These airports seem to be embroiled in corruption, crowds, chaos, confusion and a total lack of cleanliness. Amenities across the board are decidedly scarce, if not entirely non-existent, and much of the architecture in these airports verges on decrepit. Make sure you arrive at these airport terminals equipped with your own snacks, your own entertainment, lots of patience and definitely a sense of humour. These airports are the stuff books are written about and horror movies are made of.

1.Port Harcourt International Airport, Nigeria (PHC)
2.Khartoum International Airport, Sudan (KRT)
3.Kinshasa N’djili International Airport, Democratic Republic of the Congo (FIH)
4.Juba International Airport, South Sudan (JUB)

Nigeria defence
1BUSD budget with 130,000 personel grin - versus Kenya's 1.5B USD annual budget with 25,000 happy & well remunerated personnel.
Land System - Nigeria has about twice kenya's tanks.
Airpower - Kenya beats Nigeria smiley Naija has 105 compared to Kenya's 132 - 10 fighter jets compared to 17 in kenya
Navy - Naija has 75 with Kenya's 17 -understandably kenya has shorter shoreline and no threat from it's coast.

All these despite a legacy of powerful nigeria military that has overthrown civilian control severally. Kenya never.

Most Nigerians that have had the privilege of visiting Kenya can bare witness to the social economic aspect of the diversity that Kenya offers. Nigeria has a far bigger consumer power compared to Kenya but the diversity in the East African country is beyond reproach. The argument on the this thread was the fact that Kenya is making strides in very major infrastructural aspects that have far reaching economic impact on its economic growth.
For the past 15yrs Kenya has had a 5-6% growth rate in contrast to Nigeria. The Kenyan GDP despite being 30 times lower than Nigeria's oil driven economy it has managed to construct major infrastructure that directly impact the normal populace.
If the country will projectile beyond 5% growth then rest assured that it will surpass a few Asian tigers in the near future.

Kenyan asian or whites are just kenyans. Black Kenyans dominate the economy. Be it in homegrown supermakets & malls to banks to hotels to name it. Nigeria seem to be hostage to South Africa companies from MTN to Shoprite. Kenya is the deathbed of south africa companies - they can dominate Nigeria and all sub-saharan countries - but in kenya they will find nimble homegrown talent that is so competitive they'll be driven out. Now they dread coming to Kenya. Nigeria have started coming to invest in banks - and all of them are in the RED - I don't see any surviving the next 5yrs. They simply cannot outcompete kenya banks.

Kenya is not the biggest non-mineral Africa economy for nothing - it very diversified, very sophisticated and competitive free market economy - manned by some of best quality trained labour out there.

I knew u would say that,ok let me break it down to your level, firstly, most of these supermarket structures are owned and managed by Nigerians, the so-called"SHOPRIGHT" is only an "Anchors" it means they only manages the stores where provisions are sold, as for MTN, "MTN Nigeria" is not fully owned South Africa, and same goes to other telecommunication companies rather it more of a joint businesses, so please get your fact well
Re: Kenya Is Ahead of Nigeria In All Aspect (Facts Don't Lie) by ProudlyKenyan: 8:36am On Nov 28, 2016
So you think the mall owner is making more money than Shoprite? Why can't nigeria - an african giant grin ( I really chuckle at that) not have homegrown shoprite? Kenya has a dozen homegrown supermakets that can outcompete shoprite or massmart. Why isn't biggest telcom - not a nigeria company - but mtn and airtel?

And really Nigeria has a long way to get to kenya's mall, stores and supermarket sector that is only second to south africa. Shoprite is everywhere except kenya - it has no hope against local competition like Nakumart, Tusky, Ukwala(Now Choppies),Naivas and so many others. Nakumatt is now nearly closing 1B usd in revenue...and the competition like Tusky are not far off.

30% of Kenyans now shopping in formal outlets compared to 4% in Ghana, and 2% in Cameroon and Nigeria.

Nielsen listed Kenya as sub-Saharan Africa’s second-largest formalised retail economy after South Africa and ahead of Cameroon, Ghana and Nigeria. According to the survey, shifting consumer trends have driven growth in the formal retail segment, with 30% of Kenyans now shopping in formal outlets compared to 4% in Ghana, and 2% in Cameroon and Nigeria. The rise in formal outlets is in part a result of increased availability in terms of dedicated retail property.

So only 2% of Nigeria (the super rich) shops in malls and supermarkets - while 99% are shopping in corner shops! Kenya is probably going to 40% of it's people now - with supermarkets and malls now opening in small towns and even villages.

An i assumed knowledge was acquired through education.
Indian- Like any other Kenyan Indians are part and parcel of the diverse communities in our country. There are more than 4 generation of indians born and bred in Kenya and rightfully deserve to work either in public or private sector. We have more than 10 retail chains in Kenya operated by different ethnicity namely:-
Nakumatt- Indian/Kamba
Uchumi- Government/Private sector
Ukwala- Indian
Transmatt- Kalenjin
Tesia- Luhya
Naivas- Kikuyu
Tuskys- Kikuyu
Mama Watoto- Luhya

Kenya is a capitalist state and there is absolutely no where you cant stay if you can afford irregardless of colour or ethnicity... You forgot to mention the other good estates

There are Kenyan indians(based in India & Kenya), Kenyan Somalis( both in Kenya and Somalia), Kenyan Maasais(both in Kenya & Tanzania), Kenyan Sabaot(based in Kenya & Uganda) Kenyan Gabra (based in Kenya & Ethiopia) Kenyan Arabs(based in Yemen). All this are distinct communities that share social cultural beyond Kenya & its neighbors but call Kenya their home. So your point doesn't hold water.

Hahahahahaha Your intellectual processing of things proves that you got nothing in between your ears.

How can Nigerias 99% of oil be concession-ed to foreign multi-national companies that actually represent 95% of your total GDP!!!

https://www.stratfor.com/the-hub/nigeria-and-multinationals

Originally published in Financial Nigeria magazine, September 2013 edition.

Nigeria receives the largest amount of foreign direct investment in Africa. Indeed, it is among the top twenty of such recipients world-wide. The major foreign investors in Nigeria are the big multinationals; those international conglomerates that are essentially anti-nation-state in outlook, and who prefer to see the world as a single economic unit. The objective of multinational activity is to transcend the nation-state and even in the process, some of them, like the big oil-companies, have become today's multi-states. Some of these multinational companies are actually bigger in economic size than Nigeria.

The activities of these multinationals in Nigeria have primarily been in the oil and gas sectors, but they are also increasingly involved in trade, banking and insurance among others. Their involvement in the manufacturing sector has been limited. Nevertheless, there is need for appraisal and reappraisal of the cost-benefits of multinational activity in Nigeria.

Then you have Tatu city - which also is already in progress - and hope to be Sandton of Nairobi.

The best Estates in Nairobi are Muthaiga, Runda, Karen, Lavington, Kitisuru etc,, are they dominated by Indians and whites? Then to the upper middle income Estates, ever been to hurlingham, Langata, Nairobi West, South B, South C, parkland? Of those only parklands is predominantly Indian Westlands and ngara are more of districts than Estates and Indians and whites don't even make 20% of their residents. Eastleigh is practically a little Mogadishu with mostly somalis and some Ethiopians with their Gdp of $1.2bn being half that of entire Somalia, but Nairobi alone is about $40bn. eastleigh is just about 3% of Nairobi's gdp, not really controlling the economy

Nakumatt is owned by an Indian Kenyan, true, but what of Tuskys, Uchumi, Naivas etc. All big Kenyan banks are black owned, the largest industrial plants are BIDCO, the western Kenya Sugar plants and Tea mills and Nairobi's steel mills, is it just Indians and whites owning these? Get your stats right. I know the Indians and whites own a disproportionately large part of the economy, but they're far from being in control, far far off.

When you main source export & revenue & gdp (OIL) is owned by foreigners; then clearly you cannot talk about nigeria owning their economy. If they did - they won't be sabotaging pipelines and causing all the trouble from biafra, to southern woes and boko haram up north east.

Electricity - GWHS
Nothing illustrate Nigeria backwardness than Electricity. Leave the theoretical Nigeria's has 4,000 mw or 10,000mw of power (just like their GDP)- let talk about the real measure of electricity - Gilowatts per hour of electricity really produced and consumed.

Nigeria produces & consumes about 2.5- 3 GWHs of electricity. That is less than Nairobi alone who consumed 5 GWHs..with kenya as whole consumed 10 GHWS.

This country Naija is as hilarious as DRC Congo grin grin grin grin grin . Apparently nobody pays their bills so power companies are totally bankrupt and kaput.

Do they even have running water in their taps smiley Who betwitched nigeria and drc? Such a blessed country earning so much petrodollars but can't get the simplest of things together. While people in kenya buy generator (for big business or backup battery for household) as backup (a week you may get 1 or 2hrs blackout ) but in Nigeria it the main source of power - can't imagine the noise & smoke!!! Do people even own refrigerators with such unstable power.

If you want us to start digging bad news about each other's country am sure you know Kenya and bad news are like bread and butter they always go together.

I'm ready busy at work now I would have helped you Kenyans with basic knowledge about Nigeria . A pigeon will never be an Eagle no matter what he eat.

Kenya will never be in our league. Go drag with Ethiopia and others.

Show me one country in planet earth that want to be like Nigeria. Kenya aspire to reach middle-class South Africa or Mauritus or Namibia or Egypt or Botswana or even Ghana (for lack of any west african country). Not Nigeria please. I doubt even a banana state like Somalia ever want to be Nigeria. Nigeria and Congo are two countries nobody ever want to be. All East and Central Africa countries want to be like Kenya - a beautiful low-middle class country with somewhat world class infrastructure and strong economy. And we want to be like South Africa - a beautiful middle class country with world class infrastructure.
