Mayflowa:I intend to stay alive here long enough to haul my family to saner climes where things works. In an ideal situation, you do not have to pay bribe but in the real nigerian setting if it is what will get you on your feet fast then by all means. They are being paid but the working conditions is horrible. A thread on front page about an accident victim rejected by an Abuja hospital will open your eyes on the inherent everyday obstacles health workers face in a government hospital. Government bureaucracy made a policy that every emergency patient will deposit N3,500 before being attended to. N3,500 The nurses instead of instituting basic emergency protocols as is obtainable in sane countries were made to carry out the duties of a record officer, accountant/ cashier, all the while combining it with their basic nursing functions. Why won't the government employ more staffs? Why should the government institute policies that will compound the health of its citizenry by asking for deposits thereby tying the hands of its workers.? |

All these people bashing Nurses with reckless abandon, take it easy o, tomorrow never tells you who helps you. And yes there are unruly Nurses just like there are unruly employees everywhere,. What I see here is continous bashing but not one person have even suggested how to make it better. Someone asked if you are paid to smile or show compassion, answer is yes because it comes with the salary and regular salary helps the facial bones to smile lol...People keep saying don't be a nurse if u don't have the calling.... I laugh because 90% of nurses go into this profession because of money, easy access job and alternative to medicine, the 10% that do it from their heart are over shadowed by the 90% who are doing it for money. While I accept that Nigerian Nurses needs to be retrained not just in compassionate care but in skills training, I also say that the society and masses have contributed "bigly" to what we see in the health setting. Nurses are the first point of contact between the patient and the doctor and 90%of the time, the nurse sees to all your health needs, if u come here and bash them and yet refuse to talk to them one on one at the point of care, then you are crying wolf for nothing. If you refuse to aid in revamping the healthcare system in your country, then u complain in vain. If you refuse to report unruly nurses, then you are also hurting the health of others. The lady who had CS and your night nurse never showed care, you didn't report her neither did u directly admonish her rather you left it there for another to be harmed by ur inability to call things to order, how do we help sanitize the health care system? Like I said before, we can sit and complain or we can help produce better nurses. You want great nurses yet even the Rich cant even start a grant set up to help retrain nurses or even other healthcare professionals. Nursing has passed the vital signs taking era to a nurse who is independent, has critical thinking and decisions making skills to help give professional care to her patients. A Nurse who is loaded with knowledge smiles out of confidence than frown out of fear. How many Nigerian nurses can effectively give CPR or even use their priority knowledge to administer care to patients? A critical patient is asked to take number and wait because it is turn by turn, also if the nurse even decides to care for the very sick ones first, the people waiting will still bash her, and we say we are not living in a jungle? Someone said they are pay #100.000 in govt hospital, please how many percentage of nurses is that? AND do you know difficult it is to get that job without a god father? If you are not helping rebuild the healthcare system, the you are helping to run it down. 4 Likes |

Wow just had a conversation about this with my Nigerian colleague over lunch.. she was vexed cos I am on this support 'Nigerian/Black Owned Businesses' crusade ( don't mind me I have been on this Black is the new black vibe in the last couple of months ))and was upset about the attitude of the staff in a Nigerian food stuff store. Kinda off topic I know but it all kind of comes back to the same issue- Lack of customer service Like others have said its the environment but even as I make that excuse, some (not ALL) Nigerian nurses still bring that attitude to where you cant use the excuse of 'lack of facilities' I mean some people who have babies in London Inner City Hospitals actually have prayer points not to have a Nigerian Midwife on duty when they have their babies. That said, the government needs to make healthcare infrastructure a priority. Its just getting plain ridiculous. My mum was cursing Nigerian leaders when she witnessed the care from Ambulance staff when I had my son. She kept asking if we were private ( and we in the UK know that the NHS has its own bad days ). This was because we had to get a commissioner to write a letter to get an ambulance to move my Dad from Gbagada General hospital to Lasuth before he eventually passed away . My beloved dad was a casualty of the failed Nigerian healthcare system so it is a sore talking point for me. is it the buying of gloves? gloves? Like WTH.Is that not supposed to be hospital supplies? Its the equivalent of a bank asking you to buy pens for a cashier to sign or process your cheque. I don't even know how long it will take but we need to do better. and by We I mean the government cos that's the start. Then we tackle attitude next.We cant even use 3rd world as an excuse anymore. we need to do better. 3 Likes |

Gracious10: I wanted to ignore you but I just couldn't... I just want to ask you these questions.... Before you got hired for a job, don't you read the job description and what was expected of you? Before you got hired, don't the employer usually tell you the amount they were offering to pay for your services? why would anyone read a job description and accept the offer and would not do what was assigned or expected of him or her to do properly... If the pay was small, is it not wise for them to wait for a vacancy to arise in a place where they will be paid millions with smiling allowances and kindness grants...Instead of accepting an offer and start inflicting more pain to people that were already in pains Or are you trying to tell me that Nigerian employers do not stipulate what was expected of the employee in black and white when advertising for a vacant position; or that the payment was not stated during the interview...they just decided to pay the candidate whatever without his or her knowledge; or that they do not do some kind of orientation to the newbies telling them the successful candidates where they are and what the challenges they will face and expectations from the employers....In as much as I agree that there are difficult patients,..the attitude of some nurses are just inexcusable... 4 Likes |

Richy4: Please let me answer your question with a question, of all the description you see on jobs sites hiring nurses, ever seen when the company stipulates that the nurse will be a receptionist, cashier, errand nurse, records and book keeping or even house cleaner? and yes Nigerian nurses do all that and more and it's not written in black and white on their job description. And yes, companies may choose to slash a nurses pay and when you have limited jobs in nigeria, what do want them to do? Nigerian Nurses are even enforcers of hospital policies that has nothing to do with their jobs or money will be deducted from their salaries. Please, try being undercover nurse in nigeria for one day and tell me what you think. 4 Likes |

damiso: My dear, you are complaining of gloves, lol, so u havent seen where a nurse improvised plastic bag in place of gloves? Or wear gloves on one hand just to save the other pair, you haven't seen what really goes on. Ever wondered what happens to the remaining gloves, lol... naija is dog eat dog. No patient should be required to buy gloves, it's completely the responsibility of the hospital. Before Nurses are blamed, start from the top. 3 Likes |

thorpido: I usually stay off topics concerning nurses. I don't understand why no one has even come across a well mannered nurse. Yet, I have worked with many good nurses and I have always had patients thank me for taking care of them or their family. I have had patients try to hook me up with their relatives for being good to them or some big shots try to help me get better jobs from where they met me cos of my work ethics. Talking about patients absconding. Many years ago. As a young new grad, I worked in a private hospital in lagos, I admitted this little boy brought in by his obviously poor looking parents. He was very sick and they turned up with no money. Against hospital ethics, I admitted them, called the doctor and treatment started and I told the parents this was not allowed but my conscience won't let me send them home. I asked the dad to go look for some money and come and pay deposit, he promised he would pay some money to the next shift taking ovetr. I finished and went home. By the time I came back, they had absconded without paying a dime. They had codedly taken away their useless items and wrapped rubbish and left by the bedside locker which made it seem like they only went to downstairs to watch tv. Ofcourse, the admission was traced to me, I was gonna pay for their care from my meagre salary of 32k at the time. Now, tell me why I would go that extra mile ever again? I make no excuses for the unruly nurses. But for every 1 rude nurse, there are more well mannered nurses. I am one. Cc: Richy4 4 Likes |

thorpido: can't believe you just said that!!! Anyway I still feel nurses can be better behaved when treating patients! You know that girl in yaba tech who died few months back was ill managed by a nurse who discharged her despite the fact that she was gravely ill. Infact to show you how absurd that nurse was an ambulance took her back to her hostel. She couldn't even walk back! We can go on and on but generally we the patients know the nurses don't treat us well majority of the time |

Just in the same way there's an equally huge number of nurses that are skilled and professional in what they do! Even in this our hAphazard system of this country! In short both our points of views are correct! The intent of this discourse isn't to be insulting at all dear we are just exchanging view points |

DarkRebel101: In my opinion, i see nothing wrong in what the doctor said. The doctor in my opinion responded very professionally. While healthcare workers are expected to show care and compassion, they also have to be firm in their dealings with patients. This doctor already apologized and told you there is nothing he or she really can do. Its possible the medication does not even come in injectable forms. In that case, what was he/she supposed to do? And to be honest, nobody likes taking medications, including the doctor who prescribes and the nurse who administers 1 Like |

gratefulme40: I am so sorry that someone has to take your goodness and kindness for granted...That was so so wrong....But how can we take the sins of the fathers to visit their children...The fact that some one drown in the family does not mean everyone in that family must stop drinking water....there are dishonest people in the world, but does that mean we should all stop showing empathy and kindness to people we get in contact with...who are in pains .....who might be really genuine. Trust me I know that there are good nurses all over but the bad ones actually overshadowed the good ones and the rude ones are more in number.... Have you pause for a while to think why those people were trying to hook you up and do all manner of good stuffs for you....it was because you were compassionate to those patient's plight..you were willing to serve from the heart, not because u have to.. they understood what they saw in u... you gave an outstanding service in a profession where a quality customer service was next to zero...they don't just go about hooking all the nurses they see up, trying to do good stuffs for them....All we are saying is that they should be alittle bit compassionate to the patients.... |

I think the problem is Nigeria as a society. Naija nurses are products of the same society as all those living in Naija. NL has clearly shown us how dubious, wicked a lot of Nigerians are, so why are you expecting angels in your nurses? Until we start placing value on ourselves, respect for others not because they're rich or polithiefians, showing respect and giving dignity to our children, spouses, neighbors, collegues then don't expect our beautiful nurses to be sweet, and comforting. 2 Likes |

Richy4: You have just pointed out a systemic failure. Why shouldn't gloves and other consumables be readily available for health care workers? Don't be surprised that what they ended up using were left overs from another patient that has been discharged. A private hospital will have all these on ground, but govt hopsitals are being mismanaged, no accountability, everyone is there to chop money, from CMD, to Chief accountant, to Hospital secretary/administrators, down to cleaners Infact, corruption in civil service should be made a treasonable offence punished by death, but guess what? everyone's corrupt, including the judges. Let's not even go to our polithiefians, and those we continue to vote in power to represent us. 3 Likes |

Gracious10: Nurses don't discharge, not in a developed country as far as I know..but in a country like Nigeria. When a doctor isn't present on site, he passes most of his responsibilities over to the nurse in charge. I know this because I witnessed same thing 2012 myself. Now nurses are advocates...it doesn't matter if a doctor tells you to send a patient home...YOU DON'T IF YOU DON'T TRUST THAT DOCTOR'S JUDGEMENT Nurses' know their patients better than anyone and when things are not right, they should know |

babythug: Did you meet other people there when you went? Why didn't you wait as she asked you to till it gets to your turn before sorting your enquiries out? Even when trying to make simple enquiries abroad, you wait your turn. God help you if the person that came before you needed sorting out like treatment etc. You still wait for your turn, even if its one hour unless another staff comes in to assist . Nigerians need to learn patience, and not always be in a hurry. Regrading beating patients in labor, that's assault. No two words about it, nothing to justify that. They should be sued and prosecuted. Highy unprofessional I remember a case in a UK hospital of a patient in labour who bit the midwife, she was equally prosecuted. It goes both ways |

She wasn't there for the procedure she was there to enquire about the procedure. A simple answer would have done the trick instead of her screaming like a mad woman. This has nothing to do with being Nigerian or Nigerians not being patient. It's a lot to do with being polite and darn professional 2 Likes |

WellEndowed: Except things changed because in 2005-2007, it wasn't like that, nurses never discharged patients and any nurse discharging a patient when the doctor hasn't signed off on that discharge is risking her license, it doesn't matter if patient is stable or not and I agree nurses are advocates for patients, that lady shouldn't have been discharged. I love this thread, I am learning things I thought I knew, nurses now discharge patients, its well oo ,only in nigeria. |
Re: Why Are Most Nigerian Nurses Inconsiderate And Uncompassionate? by eyinjuege: 1:15am On Nov 30, 2016 |
WellEndowed: Why not just walk in to the reception, and make your enquiries if you know you're not there for a procedure? Why interrupt the nurse in the middle of her clinic? I'm very sure the health centers you mentioned have receptionists to direct your enquiries at and if they don't know much about it, they will call someone more informed to do so. Weren't other people there also to make enquiries? if you met others there, doesn't it make sense to wait your turn? If their own enquiries will take longer, you still need to wait since you met them there unless another worker comes in. When i say if the person before you needs sorting out like treatment- I meant the receptionist will still have to direct that person to where she will be treated or go for their procedure, give information flyers etc. That takes longer and you still have to wait till she's done sorting out that person. 2 Likes |

eyinjuege: She met a nurse by the door and asked a question. Read me well. A simple answer would have solved the issue. "Please see the receptionist".....or tell her where to go. Did babythug disturb her while she was carrying out procedure on a child? I am currently in a developed country but also a very Remote area at the moment. I walked into one of yhe hospitals here as I had to briefly speak to the doctor on duty. Receptionist wasn't around and had the "will be back in 15mins" card up. I also had a patient booked in to see me at 1430hrs and I was there just before 1420. This patient had a recurring condition and the doctor at the other hospital was going to discuss her issues with me briefly and also give me her file. I saw a nurse walking down the corridor and asked her how I could reach the doctor...she had a kidney dish in her hand so she was clearly busy..but was polite enough to direct me to where I needed to be and she is Indian for feck sake. You don't yell at anyone in a work environment. Tell them to see the receptionist because you are busy or something. That attitude would drive even the Pope to commit the act of swearing 3 Likes |

babythug:Your sister didn't get her facts right. The clinic in question is owned by federal government as it is a federal government institution and one thing about federal is this, they provide essential manpower for whatever show they have unlike state owned. It may not be enough but it sure as hell is a little bit adequate. So telling the world that a doctor was not there is obviously unbeliveable and afabricated affront on FG. I have colleagues working there too. 4 Likes |
