By now, it should be clear to any and everyone that the current FG is on track to be the worst government Nigeria has ever had, bar none. There is still time to turn it around, but I am not optimistic for some very simple reasons — the intransigence of our dear leader, Muhammadu Buhari; the gridlock that has come to characterise Executive/Legislature relations; the ill- advised assault on the judiciary; the tightening of government controls over everything; and many more. I think that at this point, a look at where we were last year is in order. This is the fact — in the last year of the Jonathan government, things had clearly begun to slow down. The avarice of the political class was beginning to show, and looking at our growth rate, we had plateaued, and were on a downward trajectory. Looking at this, people who believed that we were ripe for a change, were right. Added to that is the simple fact that the man in charge at the time, in character and temperament, was the best person positioned to be Nigeria’s first incumbent ever, to lose an election, and bow out gracefully. That he played according to that script, and did bow out, is Goodluck Jonathan’s legacy, and no matter what vitriol is thrown at him, that will never be taken away from him. Unfortunately, the fact that we removed a sitting incumbent increasingly appears to be the only gain we made from the 2015 General Elections. The government which was elected on the platform of improving things has not only spectacularly failed to deliver on its promises, but has taken us back in the process. 2 Likes

There was, an initial “bounce” which happened when Buhari was sworn in. Too many made the mistake of thinking that it was a sign of things to come, and to be honest, it could have been. Sadly, the man did not take advantage of it, but rather spent time glorying in the victory of his office. Was GEJ’s government better than Buhari’s? The answer to this is straightforward — and it is yes. Simply comparing some of GEJ’s cabinet, which I’ve taken the liberty to do below shows it up in lurid detail: Category A Environment -Amina Mohammed v Ogar Odey Petroleum-Ibe Kachikwu v Diezani Alison-Madueke Solid Minerals-Kayode Fayemi v Mohammed Sada Category B Attorney General -Abubakar Malami v Mohammed Bello Adoke Defence -Mansur Dan Ali v Bello H. Mohammed Foreign Affairs-Geoffrey Onyeama v Gbenga Ashiru Interior -Abdulrahman Bello Dambazau v Abba Moro Labour -Chris Ngige v Emeka Wogu Niger Delta-Usani Usani Uguru v Godsday Orubebe Power, Works and Housing -Babatunde Fashola v Chinedu Nebo; Barth Nnaji; Mike Onolememen Category C Agriculture -Audu Ogbeh v Akin Adesina Aviation -Hadi Sirika v Stella Oduah-Ogiemwonyi Communication-Adebayo Shittu v Omobola Johnson Finance -Kemi Adeosun v Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala Education-Adamu Adamu v Ruqayyatu Rufai Health-Isaac Adewole v Onyebuchi Chukwu Industry, Trade and Investment -Okechukwu Enelema v Olusegun Aganga Information -Lai Mohammed v Labaran Maku National Planning -Udoma Udo Udoma v Shamsudeen Usman Science and Technology -Ogbonnaya Onu v Ita Okon Bassey Ewa Transportation -Rotimi Amaechi v Idris A.Umar Women Affairs-Aisha Alhassan v Zainab Maina Youth and Sports-Solomon Dalong v Yusuf Sulaiman/ Bolaji Abdullahi By now, you must have guessed that those in Category A are Buhari ministers that have outperformed their Jonathan counterparts, those in Category B are those who are on par with their predecessors, while those in Category C have fallen short of what their predecessors did in office. Yet, there has been not a cabinet reshuffle, and we have a minister saying that Nigeria will not go to the World Cup, because we are too poor to go. No! We made a foolish choice last year. Now, how was the choice foolish? Going back to the beginning of this treatise, the argument can, and will always be made that the GEJ government had to go, since we don’t want to reward a bad government. BUT, did we have to replace it with this failure? The answer is no, therefore our first failure was cowardice. We failed to be bold and look at the other alternatives on offer. There were other candidates on the ballot, bearing names such as Chekwas, Sonaiya, Okoye, Salawu, Galadima. We did not give any of these a look-in, but instead fell into the trap of binary thinking. Truth is, saying that Buhari is running a bad government, does not automatically mean that I’m saying that Jonathan ran a good government. Sadly, too many Nigerians are binary thinkers, and that is why we are still seeing some of the frankly, ludicrous arguments making the rounds on social media. We replaced a government that was performing at 20% with one that is performing at 5%, and that is because we were binary in thinking. What happened to the protest vote? Why did we, when the APC presented to us, a frankly bad candidate, not coalesce around another party? Rather, we bought into the hype, gambled, and now, we may well have lost it all. obiageIi: Failed in what way?? So in effect you didn't think a country whose treasury has been looted on a massive scale and whose economy depends on a resource that is fast loosing value would go into a recession? ?? Come on..Let's call a spade a spade. GEJ being in power today, this country would be the same. It is obvious that 90% of Nigerians don't know what a recession is and its PRACTICAL & REALISTIC solutions. You want this govt to clean up the rot in one year 8 Likes 1 Share |

It's really sad what this government is turning out to be, we agree we never had an economy (oil dependant), no reserve or savings but come on its almost 2yrs. Our division and stupidity hasn't helped matter, we have refused to allow the government sell assets or borrow fund. 5 Likes |

My problem is i haven't seen a decisive action from this government to get us out of this recession, heck we could have avoided it if the president hadn't wasted six months to form his government. So because PMB has failed means GEJ wud av been better? If GEJ had been in the saddle by now,no state wud av been able to pay salaries. By now recession wud av been worse because the Nigerian state wud av been bankcrupt to pay for any good or service due to massive looting, leakages and outright cluelessness coupled with the economic disaster that the BH insurgency wud av wrought on Nigeria. By now BH wud av effectively carved out a caliphate from the north eastern states of Borno,Yobe,Adamawa, throwing not just Nigeria but d whole of West Africa into a humanitarian cum economic crisis. If by their rigging machinery,GEJ had been returned as president,I bet anyone that a military coup wud by now av taken place because the economic crisis and d loss of territory to BH wud av been unbearable for all. People due to their shortsightedness do not sit down to analyze issues and put the right parameters into place before writing whatever they feel like, thus making simplistic, road side analysis and conclusions. PMB has failed but i am sure with GEJ at d helm,Nigeria wud av been reduced in territory dramatically and d economic hardship wud av been worse,no matter how some people fail to bliv it. Buhari's failing is that he failed to arrest d tide which he cud,he is highly selective in his corruption fight and has a tribaslistic bend. GEJ wud av been worse, several times over, cud and can never be an option to any objective mind! 7 Likes 2 Shares |

I have said it many times over...we are capable of logical reasoning and I expect the argument of "rice-9k under GEJ vs rice-20k under PMB" to be left to the market women and mechanics. the economy needs urgent cash injection. 4 options 1.sell assets 2. Borrow 3. Raise taxes 4. Go after the thieves who have stolen and make them cough out what they stole. The economy needs 1 or a combination of all 4 for us to begin to see some relief. If you don't subscribe to any of them, then by all means suggest the "wonderful solution" the PMB govt. is not seeing. You think taking 8 months to appoint ministers is what caused this problem?? You think investors leaving is due to PMBs policies? The truth is that this recession has been long coming. It has arrived, unfortunately we have absolutely NO PRODUCTIVE sectors to pull us out of this mess. Note however that the most we can accuse the present govt of doing is not making enough moves to halt this catastrophe. But in its defence, a recession is not what you solve in a year. Nigeria is bleeding profusely from its femoral artery and unfortunately Dr Buhari is trying to apply a bandaid when a major surgery is required. 3 Likes 1 Share |

In many fora, I had expected my "we told you so" GEJ friends to criticuse objectively what moves buhari has made instead of this silly " rice is 20k under PMB" argument. Borrow money.....they shot it down Sell assets ......they shot it down Raise taxes.....they refused. What is the solution? 4 Likes 1 Share |

phantom: Stop trying to be clever by half. PMB is the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, he was elected because he sold himself as the right man for the job. It is his responsibility to find a solution to the problems and in a situation that the masses are not ready to accept the solution he should find a way to sell it to the masses. You are busy pointing out that the masses were against his move to solving Nigerians problem could you please tell me how he was able to smuggle the following pass the masses despite the public outcry: Fuel price increment charges for account to account transfer giving deaf hear to investigate allegations made against some of his cabinet member there are people still held in custody even after being granted bails etc So please stop passing the buck, it is simple Buhari has no solution to Nigeria problems 41 Likes 3 Shares |

phantom: I supported PMB, but with what am seeing he has no plan to take us out of this mess. The present govt keep blaming pdp 16 yrs for everything. Come to think of it, Obasonjo and his gang looted for 8 yrs yet things where not this bad. He handed over to Yaradua. yaradua and his gang sap us for 2 yrs still things did not get to this. GEJ came in and was still managing the govt with all the looting going on yet we were moving. But just under 1yr baba came in everything has gone bad. I did not support GEJ, but i don't think things would have turned this bad if GEJ is in power. 23 Likes 1 Share |

I have always told people that Nigeria is on autopilot. Nigerians are not yet ready to make Nigeria better. Buhari's policy flip flops worsened the recession. There's no confidence in the government. No sane investor would bring his money to an economy where policy changes like the weather. 12 Likes |

I watched the presidential debate then and decided to vote for Onovo. He was the only one who understood the issues with Nigeria. Majority of Nigerians fell for the propaganda from the top two political parties due to either sentiments, ethnicity, religion or the inability to critically analyze. 6 Likes 2 Shares |
