KingEbukasBlog:yes..in a way! https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Bentley_Hart He's a known christian author in his webpage he released his views: some form of ''christian nihilism'' https://www.firstthings.com/article/2003/10/christ-and-nothing https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nihilism from wiki's page on nihilism,
Søren Kierkegaard (1813–1855) posited an early form of nihilism to which he referred as leveling.[17] He saw levelling as the process of suppressing individuality to a point where the individual's uniqueness becomes non-existent and nothing meaningful in his existence can be affirmed: Hes a christian https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Søren_Kierkegaard |

jonbellion: I am not a deist bro . Refuting an atheist argument from different perspectives does not make me any less of a Christian . Its just a way of exposing how specious and tenuous the argument is . Example The argument from poor design can be refuted from the perspectives of 1. Christianity 2. Theistic evolution 3. Panentheism 4. Deism Since I can use these perspectives to refute the argument , that means I'm no longer a Christian ? Haba! |

MrMontella: In Christian atheism , an atheist can himself a Christian . So there you go . Christian nihilism is like an oxymoron . There is no such thing as that . Christ :Come unto me all ye that labour and are heavy laden and I will give you rest Nihilism : Leads to depression , suicide , impulse to destroy and commit so many sinful acts . Where is the compatibility ? 2 Likes 1 Share |

KingEbukasBlog:actually most athiests subscribe to the view of extentialism despite the number of atheistic philosophies that still find purpose and joy in life religious people still consider nihilism the logical extension of atheism Why? Why? |
Re: Religion: An Illusion That Works Well by KingEbukasBlog(m): 11:02pm On Dec 16, 2016 |
dalaman: In reality , since you deny the existence of God and believe that life has no general purpose or meaning that you are professing ideas in existential nihilism . As far as you are without God and trying to invent meaning to your life in a universe you consider purposeless and meaningless then you are an existential nihilist , basically . |

MrMontella: You did not finish the article. Let me help you. Cherrypicking is a bad thing. Note however that Kierkegaard's meaning of "nihilism" differs from the modern definition in the sense that, for Kierkegaard, levelling led to a life lacking meaning, purpose or value,[20] whereas the modern interpretation of nihilism posits that there was never any meaning, purpose or value to begin with. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nihilism 1 Like 1 Share |

Re: Religion: An Illusion That Works Well by damogul: 11:11pm On Dec 16, 2016 |
MrMontella: A nihilist is a man who judges of the world as it is that it ought not to be, and of the world as it ought to be that it does not exist. According to this view, our existence (action, suffering, willing, feeling) has no meaning: the pathos of 'in vain' is the nihilists' pathos — at the same time, as pathos, an inconsistency on the part of the nihilists. — Friedrich Nietzsche, KSA 12:9 [60], taken from The Will to Power, section 585, translated by Walter Kaufmann Stanley Rosen identifies Nietzsche's concept of nihilism with a situation of meaninglessness, in which "everything is permitted." According to him, the loss of higher metaphysical values that exist in contrast to the base reality of the world, or merely human ideas, gives rise to the idea that all human ideas are therefore valueless. Rejecting idealism thus results in nihilism, because only similarly transcendent ideals live up to the previous standards that the nihilist still implicitly holds.[34] The inability for Christianity to serve as a source of valuating the world is reflected in Nietzsche's famous aphorism of the madman in The Gay Science.[35] The death of God, in particular the statement that "we killed him", is similar to the self-dissolution of Christian doctrine: due to the advances of the sciences, which for Nietzsche show that man is the product of evolution, that Earth has no special place among the stars and that history is not progressive, the Christian notion of God can no longer serve as a basis for a morality. 1 Like 1 Share |
Re: Religion: An Illusion That Works Well by KingEbukasBlog(m): 11:12pm On Dec 16, 2016 |
MrMontella: Nihilism avers that God does not exist or He is dead . Nihilism says that life has no meaning or purpose since there is no creator . The word nihilism comes from the Latin word nihil, which means "nothing" and it shares the same root with "annihilate" , which is "to destroy completely". Anger , hatred can can induce the urge to destroy and the bible exhorts us to love and be peaceful . The devil in the bible has been associated with destruction . All these things in Nihilism are incongruous with the teachings of Christ . So how can you subscribe to Nihilism as a Christian ? Show me how intelligent you are and prove to me why 'Christian Nihilism' makes any modicum of sense to any one cognizant of both teachings . 1 Like 1 Share |

KingEbukasBlog:correct me if im wrong.. But in that wikipedia page... In all the types of nihilism listed... None stated God.. the existence of christian suicide bombers... You can connect it right? Also..the existence of ''christian atheism'' also..i dont think ''christ'' defines christianity alone.. The bible is an authority in christianity too

damogul: in deism...God has nothing do to with humanity... For materialist deists...he doesnt judge...there is no after life... They are not nihilists right? the death of God was on christianity... Its just a book's label.. Just like dawkins ''the God delusion'' which focused on religious Gods but never a Deistic God... And many others like that! |
Re: Religion: An Illusion That Works Well by KingEbukasBlog(m): 11:33pm On Dec 16, 2016 |
MrMontella: Wikipedia is the only source of information ? Right ? I've told you what Nihilism is and its roots and there is no harmony between Christianity and Nihilism MrMontella: The bible says that all murderers will go to Hell . You cant be a Christian and claim to be a suicide bomber . MrMontella: Christian atheism accepts the teachings of Christ but reject his divinity as God . The same thing with Christian deism . They all don't represent the truth in Christianity . MrMontella: Why did you make use of a different translation ? That bible verse explains why life is meaningless without God . You have not shown me the connection between Nihilism and Christianity this guy ! Stop the circumlocution and show me the compatibility . 1 Like 1 Share |

This is a great piece. I commend this writer for the educated analysis. I especially like the part he said both science and religion have done harm and good to the world. I also noted his question on how atheism intends to curtail societal vices. I believe rebellion against accepted norms and values is a major problem of the society and religion has over millennia put that in check. The problem here is the method religion uses to make people comply with the laws of the land. It uses the blackmail of hell fire and even suffering in this physical world before the hereafter. Now here are the problems with using religion to control the society : 1. The same religion that preaches peace preaches war. More wars have been fought over religious supremacy than any conflict in human history. Even today, the war on terrorism is overwhelmingly caused by religious differences. 2. Religion is so sectionalized that it's laws apply only to a closed group. If you don't belong to this group, no matter how good your deeds are, you are filthy and condemned. 3. No one can really define good or bad in religion. In a religion a deed is noble and accepted by god/gods. In another religion such deed is abhorred. Take example of marriage among Christians and Muslims. 4. The extravagance of religious leaders drips of doublespeak. Religion preaches heavenly reward but their leaders tend to be more interested in the rewards here on earth. 5. Religion is notorious for false predictions and prophecies. False hope of the Messiah. False hope of a heaven no one has a clue about. Naturally, a system that govern with lies and doublespeak cannot dictate morality. Religion lacks the credibility to be the yardstick with which morality is measured. It might have worked to control mankind millinia ago but in today's world, there's nothing as false as religion. Atheists don't claim to have a solution to world problems. But I'll open a thread on how atheism can better our world. |

KingEbukasBlog: I do not believe that life has no general purpose. It is indeed a fact that life has no general and universally accepted purpose. Purpose in life us what ever you chose to make of it. Even among the God believers life has different purposes. The purpose you ascribe to your life isn't the same with that of a muslim, and Ifa worshipper or a Hindu. As far as you are without God and trying to invent meaning to your life in a universe you consider purposeless and meaningless then you are an existential nihilist , basically . Again how can the universe be meaningless and purposeless when it has already given us a chance to be alive and survive in it? Religion and God are NOT the only things that give purpose and meaning to life. 1 Like |
