Nakuru slums (third largest county in Kenya over 50% people leaves in slums )

Nakuru a town in Kenya and the capital of the Rift Valley province. The current population of Nakuru is estimated at 600,000 of whom 190,000 live in the slums of Rhonda and Kaptembwo (only, not to mention slums like London,Mercy Njeri ,and many more ?). Currently, less than 10% of residents here have access to sufficient sanitation facilities of adequate quality . The main sanitation facilities are simple pit latrines. On average 37 people share a latrine, but in the worst cases a single latrine is shared by more than 200 people. Due to poor construction, low coverage, poor maintenance, improper use and dilapidation, open defecation still happens. Women have problems disposing of sanitary waste for themselves and children.

These conditions form the perfect environment for diseases and poverty to flourish. Children have multiple illnesses which has a detrimental impact on their health, development and education. People do not like these conditions, but have become resigned to them because they can’t see how the situation can be improved. Our work aims to help them realise the community can do to address the problem themselves.

Kenya has around 15milli to 18 million people living below the poverty line, which is quite sad, but compared to the 103 milli who got on access to toilet and almost 2/3 of your population living below the poverty line it is sad. Ours is more managable man, and our government is working hard to eliminate the so called slums. What are you doing with your 100 million toilet problem

3.2 million was the population of Nairobi in 2009. 2.5 million slum dwellers is a recent estimate. Nairobi now has a population of over 4.2 million people. The reports says 60%, meaning around 2 million guys are not anywhere in slums. And Nairobi is a metro, meaning there are surrounding places which are not within the jurisdiction of the Nairobi City administrative boundaries, and the outskirts may add upto over 6 million guys to the city. And outskirts are better built tbh.
