Five Reasons Why Ander Herrera Should Be The Next Manchester United Captain

It’s rare! The new-age supporters are often forced to believe that, after signing a first professional contract, a player’s love for football gradually evaporates. Yes, it’s difficult to deny it, too – watch them promoting products or talking to a television camera after every match and unintentionally express their scripted joylessness.

Herrera’s differences draw the fans’ energy from his reluctance to conform. He may be seen speaking enthusiastically, addressing the parts of his game that need improvement and those of which he’s very proud, but his love travels beyond the pitch. His career anecdotes include supporting the Old Trafford faithful’s protests at Real Zaragoza, commenting on UEFA’s ticketing philosophy in the Europa League, and lending his reputation to other fan interests.

At this stage in the game’s history, when the board members’ tricky relationship with the supporters and the first team exists almost abstractly, Herrera would always be a popular figure at any club.

But at Old Trafford, where the reactions have been so drastic and the acrimony so harsh, he’s especially welcome, symbolising authentic values. Herrera has emerged as a real person with a real-world outlook and, this year, that’s highly seductive.

But this unique story, the increasing affection, the bond between the player and his supporters, has found other roots also.

Incredible Stats This Season

The Spaniard arrived from Athletic Bilbao in the summer of 2014, but struggled with consistency in his debut season, as the switch from La Liga to the Premier League proved extremely challenging, particularly under the misguidance of Louis van Gaal.

However, under the tutelage of Mourinho, it’s been a blossoming season for Herrera so far. The 27-year-old midfield maestro has established himself as a regular starter, and his overall game has seen great improvement.

For example, his assist for Henrikh Mkhitaryan against Tottenham was brilliant. His overall first-half numbers were not bad, either. And the midfielder’s assist for Mkhitaryan also equalled his total from last season. If this stat is not a sign of Herrera’s development, we don’t know what is.

An Inspiration In The Dressing Room

Reuters / Carl Recine
Late March, 2015. Steven Gerrard was called up as a second-half substitute by Brendan Rodgers, with Liverpool trailing Manchester United by one goal at Anfield. Almost immediately after kick-off, Herrera would thunder into Gerrard and tempt the Liverpool skipper into a petulant stamp; the referee flashed out red card at the Liverpool legend, and another infamous Premier League moment came.

To some extent, Herrera’s involvement in that incident has been lost to its greater significance, but think deeper – it highly described his playing personality. In the most hostile atmosphere a Manchester United player can experience, he took an axe to a local icon.

Obviously, he also played exceptionally well and contributed fully to secure one of the most satisfying performances United would manage under Louis van Gaal, but it were those few seconds after half-time which actually settled down as most vivid.

“I always looked at other players at Real Zaragoza – Gus Poyet was a role model for me, and then the national team players like Xavi and Iniesta, but so were the United players like Scholes and Butt.”

As Herrera has grown into a legend-like figure, and as he is now a first-team regular under Jose Mourinho, appreciation for his emotional influence has also climbed up at the top. For a long time, United’s midfield has lacked personality. It’s often seen average technique and vision, but at the expense of other, weightier characteristics. A little heart and even less to fear forced this area of the pitch inconsistent.

But Herrera has inoculated a nasty edge; cultured passer though he is, there’s also some devil you can find in his play. He’s the most effective vocal presence under Mourinho, and evidently, often ready to face accusatory questions after a poor result, but part of his substance comes from the nastiness. Herrera often trades off his aesthetic: his sweet, impish face can conceal his darker energies. He may not look it, but he’s really a big-club bully – the talismanic Black Knight willing to do anything to win.

Hunger For Improvement In Every Aspect

Reuters / Phil Noble
Then comes the parallel line, you talk about an outrageous comparison with Roy Keane: Alex Ferguson’s monster. No matter how much tempting and convenient that may be, it’s inaccurate – and also evidently not how Herrera sees himself as a player.

Other than being midfielders, the players he admires were all actually more rounded than Keane, and all used to influence games in more delicate ways. Significantly, they are also footballers’ footballers, whom any players at the club can look forward to: players whose appeal relied on understanding all of their various functions and, by implication, their understated importance.

It’s completely normal for a Spaniard of Herrera’s generation to draw inspiration from Xavi and Andres Iniesta, national icons as they are. Like that, having come from the youth system of Real Zaragoza, his affection for Poyet not at all difficult to explain.

But looking up to Nicky Butt! Isn’t it bizarre? That’s an acquired taste.

It’s different, and proves a never ending appetite for all aspects of midfield play. Not only the reverse passes and dangerous tackles, but for covering space and showing for the ball; between them, the above mentioned players cover their position’s complete spectrum. Now just combine their skill sets and you would discover a technically flawless player of unparalleled commitment.
Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by stylochime: 6:44pm On Dec 23, 2016
Understanding The Periphery Of The Game

This is a constant theme whenever you speak of Herrera, on and off the field. No one at Manchester United celebrates with more joy or sincerity when a goal is scored, and none of the other players (yes, even Rooney) look quite as crestfallen after a lost match.

That sincerity extends into his relationship with the media, too. Beyond a gentle covering of general honesty, his interviews typically see the expression of a genuine belief – be it a recent performance or, more generally, about the way the game should have been played, governed or arbitrated.

He seems in great control to almost every aspect of the game, and fascinated by the wildest corners that his peers routinely neglect; whether it’s his interaction with fans or leadership quality.

Herrera seeks the full, immersive footballing experience, and for supporters and team-mates alike, that can become truly inspiring.

Fans basically respond to players they can relate to, whereas players react to someone they can admire. Unusually, Herrera is able to play both roles. He’s grounded enough by not ignoring the trouble found on football’s periphery, but bolstered with enough sense of self to still be a factor within its grand centre. He is blessed with skill, but also a dangerous weapon – an angel with the ball, a demon without the ball.

In essence, you may call him the perfect modern day hero; the ideal moral focal point for a club that lacks a definitive identity, and a perfect candidate for team captaincy.

The logic is in the challenge.

The least United can achieve (as far as I am concern) is to finish above Arsenal, which I dare him will not happen this season.

That's for him saying Arsenal cannot win a title, whereas we have finished above his club for 3 seasons counting. Hypocrisy.

He'll come here to say he is average and a card away from a red but its amazing what his stats show..Amazing how he never gets that red card. Herrera reminds me of Scholes..Nice passes, crunchy tackles and a heart to die for the club. Something i dare say 90% of this squad collecting huge wages can't boast of. He comes across as the kind of player who'd cry if he did something stupid at a crucial time the club needs him or picks an injury in a game he is most needed. I don't see anyone more deserving of the captaincy from the younger crop than this guy. He's more English and Mancunian than Spanish. Anyone who hates a player like this doesn't deserve to be a fan of this club

I will not insult you. I will simply correct your lack of understanding of English grammatical expressions.

When someone says 'the least you can achieve', he actually meant that by your status, that is the least that is expected of you.

It's like when I say the least Bayern can achieve this season is to win the Bundesliga. That means I expect Bayern to win it. Therefore if they don't, it therefore means that it is failure on their part.

I don't blame you to be honest, it's our poor educational system.

"He’s a great professional, a fantastic boy. He's very honest and open. He opened his heart, and my answer is simple; if he’s playing regularly with me, I have the right to say ‘no way’.

"If he’s not playing regularly, I have no right to tell a player who wants to be happy, I have no right to say ‘you are going nowhere’. My answer was: if the offer is right, and our board thinks it is a good offer in relation to the quality of a very good player like Morgan, then I would not stop him."

"Teddy [Sheringham] was still playing at 40 and still scoring goals. Teddy was never blessed with pace and nor is Zlatan Ibrahimovic, so I don't see why he can't continue playing. As long as he gets service, he will always score goals.

"It's probably not the example that United fans want to hear, but it's like Ian Rush with goalscoring.

"He scored so many goals, season after season because he just knew, through instinct, where the defenders were and where the ball was going to end up.

"Zlatan made a challenge on a West Brom centre-half where he possibly could have been sent off," says May. "But he didn't leap with his elbow out or intent to hurt. He got away with it, but the defender must have been wondering what had hit him. He'd gone for a ball that was 65 percent in his favour, but Zlatan still went for it.

"I was a defender and I played against some of the best attackers in football and I'd say that 98 percent of them wouldn't have gone for that ball.

"He was brave to do that, but I've never seen someone play upfront on his own and run the line like Zlatan does. He's so good that he ties two central defenders down in each game. He bullies them, he sends out a message as if to say: 'Bring it on!' He's not arrogant like some say, he's just very confident and has enough ability to trust his talent and his judgment."

- David May
Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by Oasis007(m): 9:25am On Dec 24, 2016
"Michael is another not blessed with pace, nor is he a box-to-box midfielder but, like Ryan Giggs and Teddy, he's found a way of playing which suits him. He enables the others around him to be better players, to attack. His presence reassures them; his simplicity is so constructive to United doing well.

"Michael has got eyes in the back of his head. I watch him every game and I think, where on earth has he seen that pass from, because he hasn't looked for it. He just knows and you can't teach that. Not only can he see which pass needs making ahead of others, he makes the pass too.

"There was a period around 2010 when [Carrick] received a lot of stick from United fans but every player who has ever played with Michael says he's unbelievable. Are they all wrong? Why do they all pick him out, the people who see him every day?"

"The feeling that night was something that I've never had before in my life; that two minutes on the pitch just after we'd won it.

"[Carrick] affords [Paul] Pogba and [Ander] Herrera the freedom to express themselves," says May. "He conducts the orchestra by ordering players about and he's a reason why Herrera is getting so much praise and Pogba too."

"There have been changes with sports science and lifestyle. Michael Carrick won't be having 10 pints of beer over a weekend like I and other players did. We had a dietician at United but the science was nowhere what it is now. Our body fat was measured by calipers, which pinched the skin. We'd all cheer if someone was a bit on the heavy side; something Roy Keane never got as he was always the skinniest.

"The players now have ice baths to aid recovery. The only ice baths we had were at Barnsley away and it was because there was no hot water. They're playing on better pitches, being better looked after.

"The same rules don't apply to Ibrahimovic, who loves playing 90 minutes every game in a zone of his own, just as the fans love watching him score winning goals, while Carrick keeps things ticking further back.

for a long time wenger normally see himself battling with 2 or 3 seasoned managers which automatically makes him assured of top four even if the 2 or 3 managers surpass him. now he is faced with 4 top class managers who r more energized to succeed. now the top 4 might just not be sure for d specialist in failure again.
Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by Oasis007(m): 9:46am On Dec 24, 2016
"I can say that's gone [Manchester United great Tradition]. There have been a few changes at Manchester United but that's the way they have chosen to go.

"They were a football club who enjoyed traditions with the way they spent. They didn't try to compete with all the other clubs. They did what they thought was the right thing to do and spent the right way.

"Maybe that has had to change because of the current situation. [But] Sir Alex [Ferguson] went out and bought wisely and correctly in the transfer market and what he thought he needed to do.

"When I first went in my real target was Gareth Bale. I felt all along that Gareth Bale was a Manchester United player.

"I fought right until the last minute. We actually offered a bigger deal than Real Madrid. But Gareth had his mind made up on going to Real Madrid. That was, in my mind, the player I really wanted to bring to Manchester United.

"The other one was Cesc Fabregas, who we thought we would get right up until the last minute.

"I remember when I first met Sir Alex and he always said there was a chance Ronaldo might come back.

"So that was the level we were targeting. I was not going out to bring in seven, eight players, because we had a squad which had just won the league.

"Toni Kroos was agreed to come in the summer. I had agreed it with Toni himself and his agent. Sometimes you don't get deals done. Gareth Bale, we were probably behind all along, Real Madrid were well in for it.

"The Cesc one was disappointing. It was very close. And Toni Kroos came up in January - it was done.

"A lot of players come into Manchester United and have not necessarily made the difference. But I think that, given time and having got to this period, I would have hoped I would be working with a successful team now."
