Sa’ad Abubakar lll, the sultan of Sokoto, has asked the upper chamber of the national assembly to reject the bill seeking equality for male and female children in the sharing of inherited family wealth or property. The bill also proposes that a widow should be entitled to the custody of her children unless it is contrary to the interests and welfare of the children. It also says a widow should have the right to remarry any man of her choice and should have the right to a fair share in the inheritance of her late husband’s property, and the right to live in her matrimonial home. But speaking at the closing ceremony of the 20th Zamfara State Annual Qur’anic Recitation Competition, Abubakar said the bill was against Islamic religion and, therefore, unacceptable to Muslims. “Our religion is our total way of life; therefore, we will not accept any move to change what Allah permitted us to do,” he said. “Islam is a peaceful religion; we have been living peacefully with Christians and followers of other religions in this country. Therefore, we should be allowed to perform our religion effectively.” The monarch appealed to the red chamber not to consider the bill because of its religious implications. He also hailed the federal government and Nigerian army for the capture of Sambisa forest from Boko Haram insurgents, describing it as historic. “We are happy to hear this good news; we are, therefore, calling on the Nigerian army not to relent in its efforts in fighting the activities of Boko Haram,” he said. He called on Muslims to continue to pray for peaceful coexistence in the country, advising them to cooperate with all the tiers of government to move the country forward. https://www.thecable.ng/sultan-tells-senate-reject-gender-equality-bill 9 Likes 3 Shares

Justdulla: Implementing for the use of Muslims alone? If yes which am sure it is, Christians, traditional worshipers, those who practice voodoo et al should push for theirs to be implemented. Better still, divide the country let everybody go their separate ways. I don't care what you worship or what rule you follow as a way of life as far you don't force it down my throat, am ok with it. 89 Likes 2 Shares |

carmag:You are one of the saddening problems of Nigerian youths. The problem is that you people don't read and arent informed. Islam already has laws on what the legislature is aiming to implement, so why should they subject muslims to a new one?? They have been living with it for many years and there has never been problem of Inheritance et al In muslim domains because there is already a stipulated sharing formula. I made use of google. Next time make use of google as well before posting thrash. It will be beneficial for common sense and humanity 26 Likes 3 Shares |

In Islam a woman has no financial obligation and the economical responsibility lies on the shoulders of the man. * Before a woman is married it is the duty of the father or brother to look after the lodging, boarding, clothing and other financial requirements of the woman. * After she is married it is the duty of the husband or the son. * Islam holds the man financially responsible for fulfilling the needs of his family. In order to do be able to fulfill the responsibility the men get double the share of the inheritance. For example, if a man dies and after giving the shares of other relatives, if the children (i.e one son and one daughter) inherit N150,0000the son will inherit One Hundred Thousand Naira and the daughter only Fifty Thousand Naira. Out of the one hundred thousand which the son inherits, as his duty towards his family, he may have to spend on them almost the entire amount or say about eighty thousand and thus he has a small percentage of inheritance, say about twenty thousand, left for himself. On the other hand, the daughter, who inherits fifty thousand, is not bound to spend a single penny on anybody. She can keep the entire amount for herself. Would you prefer inheriting one hundred thousand Naira and spending eighty thousand from it, or inheriting fifty thousand rupees and having the entire amount to yourself? Islam gave the right to the women to inherit. In several Verses of theQur’an - in several verses, it is mentioned that a woman, irrespective she is a wife or she is a mother, or a sister, or a daughter, she has a right to inherit. And it has been fixed by God Almighty in the Qur’an. 46 Likes 7 Shares |

Justdulla: Just because the bill is against Islam law, so that's your excuse of holding other religion and culture to ransome..... This is pure selfishness. I say pass the bill, its now up to you Islam leaders to teach your followers your law. You don't have to force it on them. 43 Likes 1 Share |

Jokerman:Dont try to change the topic of discussion here. Am not a religious fundamentalist or fanatic. But truth must be said when its obvious. Nigerias system of government was bequeathed upon us by the Almighty supreme british who brought about missionary expedition to conquer our nation. They tried to bridge our divide with the almagamation of 1914,but they forgot that the left a nation with 2 distinct religions and varied cultural practices. Look at the banking/financial system, the educational system, the public service system, et al. The were all considered for a secular society. but lets face the fact, Naija ain't like that. until this fundamental problem is addressed, everyone will keep fighting for his religious cum tribal interest till the world will come to an end. Let lawmakers always consider our ways of life and religion when making laws. Enough of copying british or American laws, cos we are different people in different climes. 8 Likes 1 Share |

Sultan failed it Nigeria is a Secular society and therefore, it should not be built around Religion. The Senate should not be guided by Religious dictates instead, Religion should be guided by the dictate of the National law. 6 Likes |
