But some cars have the engine number hidden under the engine and even the customs approve the papers and all. =DO= is always written in space for engine number.

I don't think a police man can arrest anyone for that, except the person falls for it. Worst case you and the police all go to customs office and FRSC and ask them why they approved papers for a car with the engine num not visible.

One Policeman had the guts to ask me when (year) i bought the car, to make it worst he had the change of ownership certificate in his hands among other documents.

I couldn't reply him so i kept quiet till he asked the third time. i was afraid i will say something that will land me in detention. Even the answer i gave him shows i was irritated, i said "I cant remember, check the documents well, it is there". He said "where", i said, "Check well you have the documents". He saw it and said "2013?", i said, "i think so". I was cursing in my heart.

One policeman stopped me on the road. He went from A to Z... nothing. Finally, he found something! My rear license plate holder has an eagle on it, and it was blocking part of one letter in the license plate. Why are you blocking your license plate? He asked. You be armed robber? In my head I was thinking, the man can't be serious. Out loud I smiled and said ok, thank you for the advice, I will definitely change it. 20 minutes of talking about the importance of not using fancy license plate holders, he told me they didn't have fuel. Make I drop something. undecided

Small shame, just small shame, you no get. cry

2. No engine number on vehicle papers:
Most car owners overlook their engine number because it is hard to see on the engine block. Some believe they are the same with the Chassis/VIN number. If police catch you, you will know the truth. These guys know the exact location of the engine number on most cars. It’s better you take the pain to search for it now than fall victim later.

I've fallen victim of this. The guy that registered my vehicle skipped the engine number. Many officers have checked my particulars and never observed it until I ran into some hardened policemen. That evening, all the cars they stopped were my type and model.

To show me where it is, the officer entered bush, cut a stick to scratch the dirt on the engine block. It didn't appear well, he now went into their hilux, cut foam from the passengers seat, (now you know how their vehicles loses value so fast). He then used the foam to clean the engine block and showed me.

He asked for 50k. Said, he'd declare my vehicle stolen and myself as the suspect. I wasn't ready to pay a dime. Eventually we went to the station.

They refused to take the case to the desk, then I realised the case wasn't a big one, they just needed money for that friday night. As night was approaching, I called a friend who lives in the area for moral support.

Long and short, for "wasting/taking" their time, we parted with 6k, 1k for each person on their patrol. I wanted to give 2k, actually but the lead officer now said, "how dem go share am?" My guy now added 4k.

The thing vex me.

Following Monday, I went to court for an affidavit with a police extract to cover it, all for 2k.

Yea! the Nigeria Police is your friend. But why do they use the slightest issue to turn us into their BIG FISH? This is one question you will ask yourself if you fall into their small traps.

You have to know these 5 small things that can help you avoid their big wahala:

1. Error or Omission of a digit especially in the engine/chassis number:
No man is a above mistake no dey for police dictionary. Make sure you check your vehicle papers word for word and letter for letter. Even the spelling of your name and address.

2. No engine number on vehicle papers:

3. Only rear windshield is tinted:
You may get away with this after a big fight. But a desperate officer will never release you until you drop something. However, a tint permit will give you a free pass.

4. If you carry stuffs that don’t have receipt in your car:
This one is really crazy. If you carry N15k DVD player, they will ask for receipt. You carry N8k standing fan, they will ask for receipt. Meanwhile your phone is a N470k iPhone 7 plus

5. Actual car colour is different from the colour on your vehicle paper(s):
Did you just register or renew your vehicle papers? Did you just respray your car to another colour? Always ensure the colours are the same.. because our Nigeria police will quickly conclude that you stole the car.

Now let’s hear from those that have had first hand experience.

I agree that you have to inspect your vehicle documents and insist on corrections from FRSC, VIO and police becos these guys are professionally incompetent and don't like themselves.

You don't need receipts to move about with your laptops and phones.

When a police asks me for my phone receipt I usually reply by asking: Is yours lost? grin

If they insist just side down in your car stare straight, they usually become uncomfortable and let you go.

On tinted cars the rule of the thumb is: If you can see the occupants face from outside the car, the glass is not tinted.
