Dear nairalanders, I need your input/advice on this: I got admission for a master's degree program in the United States. Before I left Nigeria, my sponsor assured me that all was well. When I got to the school, I registered for courses and when it was time for him to transfer money for me to pay for my tuition, he started telling me stories that his business is going down and advised me to defer the admission.

The school officially resumed on the 3rd of January this year and I have only attended one class. Now I'm thinking of deferring the admission then go back to my home country, apply to a college so I could enter with the privilege of the institution I first applied to and seek for a transfer from the institution to the college I will be applying to while I'm back to Nigeria.

can this work? if I'm able to defer the admission, go back to my home country and apply to a college, will I be allowed to enter the United States again? will the institution agree to transfer me to the college. I really need your advise to make a decision.

Your sponsor no try at all..

Well if you have GRE and TOEFL you could have use it to apply for GA/TA/RA and which will help your condition small.

If you defer then you will come back to Naija and prepare yourself for you Msc because you apply for CC is like you demoting yourself unless you have hidden plans

Assistantships
Available to students in masters and doctoral programs in most academic departments, graduate assistantships provide financial compensation for a designated unit of service to the assistant's major department of instruction. All new graduate assistants must attend an orientation program and will be enrolled in an online course.

International students applying for graduate teaching assistantships must have minimum TOEFL scores of 600 (paper-based) or 100 (Internet-based) or an overall band score of 7.0 on the Academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS) with no individual band score below 6.0. International students may be appointed to graduate assistantships. Those found to have difficulties with English will be referred to the Speech and Hearing Center's speech enhancement program; such students will be assigned nonteaching duties in place of classroom instruction and will be re-evaluated each semester. If a student is not designated as qualified to give classroom instruction by the end of one academic year, the assistantship will not be renewed.

Graduate Research Assistantships

Available to students in masters and doctoral programs in some GW academic departments. A graduate research assistant receives compensation for research assistance provided to a professor.

Hello guys, pls I got admitted into BGSU for Fall 2017(MSc. Computer Science). I got the offer last two weeks and it was stated in the offer that the department is the one giving GAs and they would inform me if I'm offered assistantship which I've been waiting for. However, I got a mail from the student counsellor that I should send my docs(bank statement included) in order to be issued my i20. I don't even have the amount they stated as tuition fees and I'm hoping to get the GA, having indicated my interest during application. I would like to ask if I should my contact my graduate Cordinator to know the situation of things with respect to the GA offers in order to get my i20.

I guess this case of mine is similar to @renewable.

cc: Electronic, Slimmy2005, Sir Riddy, Lagosismyhome, Gunther6, just wise and everyone in the house who can help, please kindly advise me on what to do. Thanks

Even if you got the GA you'll still need a bank statement in order to get your I-20. You can always check with the graduate coordinator to know the progress of the GA decision. Don't forget that you can also check with other departments for available GA position or visit the job portal.

Leaving the US should be your last resort. Try to work things out. If you defer, you are expected to return to Nigeria anyway. So weigh your options well before you make any decision.

Hello Group.

A big Question here, what are my prospect of getting a Visa approved if am enrolled for a Graduate Certificate in top Engineering Field and in a top university in Indiana State.
The School has advice i can put in for a Graduate certificate (Graduate Certificate in Systems Engineering)
Is it worth it ?

What's the duration? Graduate cert is dicy IMO. Why not do a masters? Though if it's them MIT type schools then you should be aight. But it still begs the question: why not a Masters? Watchu wanna do with the grad cert?

In such cases bro you are to contaxt the Grad Cord and seek his help regarding the GA. Just make him know that the GA is key to your accepting the offer.
Also go to the personal webpage of ALL the faulty in your department and check if they need students to work in their research/Lab.
Also go to the job site of the school and seek for other administrative GA if possible. You never know....
God help us all.
