Agreed. Calling them from outside the country is just asking for problems. They need to deal with someone locally for accountability and also they won't feel there's an unlimited supply of money if they're dealing locally. When you call from 'abroad' they just see excess money.

Yes it should be encouraged sourcing one's materials, but it should also be encouraged not to sweat the small stuff.

There was a case of someone abroad whose sister joined forces with the Co tractor to pad up the budget . I am glad this has come to the open forum... after we have tried to settle this offline. Thank you for your patience, Fash78.
I am sorry this has turned out to be a disaster for Fash78 and I. I have recommended so many artisans both on NL and Non-NL
before and I was never in this kind of swindle or absconded business. This has left me sad... Money is not easy nowadays.
I have recommended this guy Sova to more than 10 people and has done satisfactory job. I did not see this one coming.
We have been trying to locate this guy for several months now... but all to no avail. But I am still working hard on this.
I have always stood behind those that I recommended but this is the first time my name has been dragged in mud.
All I have ever done is to help the Client and the Artisans... never demanded any form of payback from anyone.
With this disappointment, no recommendation will be forthcoming from me anymore.
I have supplied all his pictures I have and all the known address but he is yet to be found, but he still pay for his crime.
This has left me perplexed.... and lesson to never trust anyone.. I will keep working on this guy.

Men can you imagine when I bought my about 600 plus mix woods, 100 here 50, there add up.That difference could pay for his labour. This is the problem we have as people, most see nothing wrong with little stealing.

Agreed that some people get duped by family but it's just something to keep in mind when calling from outside the country that you will likely get duped by the artisans too because they think you have a lot of dollars. Not everyone has the luxury of going home for extended periods to monitor their projects. You have to be comfortable with paying a little extra than someone that lives in Nigeria but your goal should be to keep that extra to the minimum. As for me, God bless my sweet mama

Like EgunMogaji said, we should adopt different approach to our build. What I'm saying without encouraging little stealing is I will not go to sawmill for just a couple of wood as I'm really time poor each time I visit Nigeria. In fact I don't go buying materials myself. I invest my time in knowing the going rate for needed stuff and the DIRECT supplier contact. When in Nigeria or even home abroad, I just make phone calls to suppliers to deliver to site. I'm normally at my site to take stock and ensure quality of materials and services delivered.

Yes, some people were duped by family, but this should not be a basis to conclude that everybody gets duped by family. That would be an error of thinking. Upon all my travel and posing, the stuff my mum handles in 10 minutes with artisans, I would not dare try it in 10 years. I join you in appreciating my mama and sibling too.
