The Minister of Science and Technology, Dr . Ogbonnaya Onu , has said plans are underway to ensure that primary schools in the country teach mathematics and science subjects in indigenous languages.

The plan is meant to encourage the application of science and technology in the country , Onu said .
The minister stated this while addressing pupils of Ekulu Primary School in Enugu, the Enugu State capital.

Onu was at the school to present computer sets and other science kits donated by the Ministry of Science and Technology to the school .
Noting that Nigeria’ s future depended on how effectively it applied science and technology , Onu said the country could one day send scientists into space .

The minister said the Federal Government was worried about the low interest in mathematics and the sciences in primary and secondary schools across the country .
The problem can be addressed by “ popularising” the subjects , he said .

Onu stated , “The Ministry of Science and Technology is worried over the low interest in mathematics and the science subjects , so, we are working on plans to teach mathematics and sciences in indigenous languages in primary schools.

“ These pupils grow up with their indigenous languages at home before they start going to school , where they are now taught in foreign languages. So , we have observed that there is a challenge to understand the foreign languages first before they could even start understanding what they are being taught.
“ We believe that this plan will help our students to understand mathematics and the science subjects , and also promote the application of science and technology for national development . ”
He added that some countries that were making advancement in science and technology , such as India, adopted a similar strategy by teaching mathematics and the science subjects in indigenous languages at the primary school level .
The minister, however, said there was a need to first develop the vocabulary of the indigenous languages before they could be used to teach the subjects effectively.

He said the Ministry of Science and Technology would collaborate with the Ministry of Education to develop the capacity of the local languages to serve as effective tools for teaching mathematics and science subjects.

He believed that Nigeria would remain an import- dependent nation if the citizens did not embrace science and technology .

He linked the socio-economic challenges in the country to inadequate application of science and technology .

The minister stated, “ No nation can become great without science and technology . If Nigeria is to be great, then , Nigerians must embrace science and technology .

“ You can’ t produce anything without science and technology. We are exporting our jobs by importing everything we need , and that is why our graduates are no longer able to get jobs after their studies.

“ For us to build the country of our dreams , for us to make Nigeria a truly great nation , a nation that is able to feed and house its citizens, a nation with a stable currency , we must embrace science and technology .

“ It is my duty as the minister of science and technology to make Nigerians to understand this.”

This would be the best thing ever to happen in Africa since our independence. When we take control of education it will be the beginning of prosperity, freedom, real independence, development, name it!!!. The western world view imposed on us in the sciences and arts will all go away and we will develop our own minds. You can imagine a future where an Igbo or Yoruba chemistry professor begin to challenge western theories with our own findings.

To start, they should make sure our schools begin to require "credit" in our various native languages and make it compulsory subject. Then, create the terminologies, they need do that with scholars of our native languages.

What's the point of learning maths and sciences in your indigenous language only to graduate without infrastructures to practice it?

Those of us that did sciences understood them, the language wasn't the problem. We lacked materials and good teachers.

....English is uSA's indigenous language because they migrated from Britain over 1000years ago,and America is great courtesy of foreigners(encompasses many nations)

flash drive for instance can still be called"flash drive" since we don't have any indigenous name for it.i agree that many science terminologies are alien to us

you learn easier with the language that you were taught at home...

in the east learn in igbo...
in the west learn in yoruba..
in the north learn in hausa..

much easier for the children....

I see a lot of ignorance on this thread. This is something the western region has been screaming since time immemorial. It almost became possible in the 80s I think. There is a butttt load of overwhelming evidence about the immense benefits of teaching making Indigenous languages (L1) as the sole language of instruction for these levels of education.
And may I inform people that don't know, that Yoruba language is the most researched and developed indigenous language, which has been constantly updated by linguist and educationist over time (A quick google search will help anyone who is genuinely interested in this subject ). to meet up with the necessary terms and vocabulary of various subjects ranging from medicine to engineering to information technology etc. I have to give credit to various men and women who have been passionate about this subject. People like Dr. Kayode J. Fakinlede of the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), compiled and published Modern Dictionary of the Yoruba Language: Translation of Modern and Scientific English to Yoruba.
Professor Omotoye Olorode a botanist, whilst at Obafemi Awolowo University compiled native words for different plants in Yorubaland. Of special interest is the work of a linguist, Professor Kola Owolabi of the University of Ibadan who, whilst translating the 1999 Nigerian Constitution into Yoruba, created indigenous legislative terms for the language. In the past decade or more, he has devoted his entire time and energy to the creation of technical terms in specialized domains for use in Yoruba. In 2008, he established the Centre for Yoruba Language Engineering (CYLE) in Ibadan. People too numerous to mention.
A quick walk to the Yoruba language center of the university of Ibadan, largely funded by the US. State department will enlighten anyone who is geniunely interested in the great stride people have made both home and abroad about this subject.
